Avis was likely born about 1875-1885 and gave my mother up for adoption in 1915. Missouri law prevents my seeing her original birth certificate, but I have her adopted birth certificate and adoption "deed". Avis lived in Mercer Co. at time of adoption.

    3. I looked in the 1880 census and found the following, which I believe is your family: Marion Township 188/188 BALES, Nancy W F 45 Widow House Keeping TN VA VA Harrett W F 19 dau Single At Home MO TN TN William W M 15 son " Works on farm " " " Peter M. W M 14 son " " " Thomas F. W M 13 son " " " Mary E. W F 10 dau " " " Eliza A. W F 8 dau " " " Sarah C. W F 4 dau " " " Bertha A. W F 2 dau " " " I did not find the family in the 1870 census of Mercer County. I only looked in the records I have in my own home, so they may have been in an earlier census of the county. Again, from the Fairley Cemetery is this listing: P. M. Bayles, died July 24, 1878, aged 56 y 11m 6 d Nancy C., his wife, died Apr. 25, 1899, aged 58 y 1 m 20 d There are several other listings, which appear to be your family, as there is a P. M. Bales, whose birthdate matches the Peter M. in the 1880 census, etc. Jennie Vertrees backwood@grm.net

    3. Patrick, I don't have any of the names you mentioned in my records. However, I am a descendant of Mercer County Cox'. My GGG-Grandparents were James Riley Cox (b. 1821, d. 1902) and Nancy Cartmill (b. 15 Mar 1838, d. 13 Oct 1920). Based on James Cox' age when he married Nancy (in 1876), she may have been his 2nd wife. Both are buried in the Spickard Masonic Cemetery. I descend through their daughter Ola Cox (1878-1949) and her husband Joseph Franklin Tharp (1870-1960). Ola had one sister, Neta Cox (1886-1887), that I know of. James' parents have been a stone wall for me for a couple of years. The only possibly clue I have is that he is buried next to (on in the same cemetery as) Abram Barney Cox (1823-1915). Abram was born in Miami Co., OH and was a son of Joshua Cox (1783-1847) and Hannah Coble (1789-1876). Joshua and Hannah at least 11 children but I can't find any record that says my James Riley Cox was one of them. If you'd like any of the info on Joshua's other children, drop me an email and I'll send it to you. " 2 F MO Levi Cox is my Grgrgrandfather, and Samuel W. is his brother. The other 2 adult males are sons of Mary from a previous marriage (Thomas Cox). Could you please check for me to see if you can find ANYTHING on this family in this county. I would like to know Samuel and Levi's parents. By this census, I would assume they, (or at least Mary, since Nathan was born there 19 years ago) have been in the county for almost 20 years. Maybe not Levi, since he was born in Indiana. Would you check the 1850 census to see if you could find either Samuel, or Levi? Either as head of their own household, or in with another family? I would appreciate any information you could find in Mercer County, and I thank you in advance.
