    2. Jerry: I would like to see what you have in your wonderful library on the Moore family. I am researching the Levi Moore/Rachel Haynes line down through Truman Kendall Moore/Elnora Dean Dykes. 3. Jerry, In the Lineville book, pub. 1994, on Turman Moore, it states his parents were Otto Moore and Flossie (Bates) Moore. My interest is Flossie Bates. I have a picture of my grandparents, Andrew Mock, his wife Beth (Barritt) Mock, son Eli, and EMA BATES is written on the back. 1912. I don't know who Ema Bates was. If she was relation, or just a neighbor. I think she may have been related to Beth (Barritt) Mock, maybe through the Moore family, as Beth's parents were James H. Barritt and Amanda (Wasson) Barritt. The Wasson's did marry into the Moore family, more than once. Hope you, or someone out there can help me with this question. Thanks Mary Yakima, Wa. marylkinney@webtv.net

    2. Hi Jerry It is great of you to offer to help. I could use anything you may have on Oliver Ernest Shipley, particularly, his adoption and birth family, and on his wife's family, the Gloshens. Her name was Mary E. Gloshen and she was the daughter of John and Martha Snyder Gloshen. Oliver usually went by Ernie according to oral family information. Thank you Barb Shipley Lemley

    1. [MOMERCER-L] Black Hawk War
    2. Wanda If your Brown relatives who served in the Black Hawk War were the ones who enlisted from Vermillion Co Illinoisnthen they likely were serving alongside some of my Hart relatives. My family were on the 1830 Vermillion Co census before moving to Putnam. If you go on www.google.com and enter Black Hawk War you can find the veterans list. William Morgan Hart moved to present-day Mercer County in 1839. (His first and second wives were sisters of my ggg grandfather) This was in Ruth Hart's book about him. "In May of 1832, William Morgan Hart enlisted at Hennepin, Putnam County, Illinois, to fight in the Black Hawk War. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in Captain William Haws Company. This Confrontation with the Sauk (Sac) and Fox Indians, led by Chief Black Hawk lasted only a few months in the summer of 1832, at Hennepin, Illinois. We find a record of his service at the National Archives in Washington, DC Included in the file is an application dated 1855 in Mercer County, Missouri, which shows William Morgan Hart applying for the Bounty Land to which he may be entitled under a recent Act of Congress based on his service in the Black Hawk War. He was issued Warrant # 80817 for 160 acres of land. The records do not show where this land might have been located, and we know nothing more of the disposition of the Warrant or the 160 acres of land." Other members of my Hart family also served in that war were my gggg uncles John Hart, Mathias Hart and William H. Hart . "Andrew Friend fought in the Black Hawk War in Northern Illinois in the early 1830's - the same War in which Dallas Hart's uncle, William Morgan Hart fought." (Andrew's daughter married the nephew of Wm Morgan Hart. Other members of my Hart family also served in that war were my gggg uncles John Hart, Mathias Hart and William H. Hart .) "John served in the Black Hawk War in 1832 as a Corporal in Captain William Haw's Company." "The next year, 1831, we find Mathias and family have moved north west in Illinois to Putnam County, along with other members of his family. Mathias served as a Private in Captain George Willis' Company of Mounted Volunteers in Black Hawk War, 1832. He enlisted 21 May 1832 and served until the Indians had been driven from the area, being mustered out 18 June 1832." "William Hart served as a Private in Captain William Haws' Company of Illinois Volunteers, in the Black Hawk War in northern Illinois in the summer of 1832. We have included a brief history of this War in the section of this book on William's father, Peter Hart. We have been told, that Elizabeth Hubbard Hart applied for a pension based on William's service in this War, after she was widowed. If this is true, the National Archives in Washington, D. C. has "misplaced" the file on William Hart, as we were told, that the Archives, has no record of his service, nor of a pension for his wife." Do you have any Harts in your family? Marcia Hart Wilson

    3. Good Evening! I want to thank you for the wonderful file you sent me, I just printed it out and it was 27 pages long! I also recently received some tidbits of information from a "cousin". In it, there are excerpts from "Mercer County Pioneer Traces, VOL I " page 12. Without going through the entire list of Old Settlers, Samuel Brown is listed as one of the early settlers of Mercer County, along with Benjamin, John, Thomas and Robert Brown, who we believe may be Samuel's brothers. Their parents were John Brown and Priscilla Essman. If this is the Samuel brown who married Hiley Petree, they were married in Ray Co abt 1834. I believe they moved to Mercer Co abt 1843. I was very interested to note that the Pioneer Traces also mentioned that Samuel and Thomas Brown built the first mill in Mercer county. Is there more information available about this mill? It also mentioned that Samuel Brown was a soldier in the Black Hawk War. I don't know much about this war except that it was fought in Illinois apparently. I would truly appreciate it if you can elaborate on any of this information. If I can help you with anything, I would be glad to share what we have learned about this family. Thank you again for all your time and effort! Wanda spegal

Did she remarry? When did she die and where is she buried. Also, on the 1870 Harrison County census PAUL and SARAH (FALLIS) HOLMES are shown with a son, Samuel, b ca 1868. 2. Hi List, Yes Jerry is a wonderful person. He sent me my Cunningham file in detail. He is one of the rare people who goes above and beyond. I want to say a special Thanks to Jerry again for all the help he has given me. I also would like to ask Jerry if there is anything in his vast library that explains why alot of people left the Decatur Co IA area in the early 1880's. I know some left to go out "west", but others after living in Decatur Co for 15 to 20 years and were 50 to 60 yrs of age sold out and moved on. Was there an economic downturn in this area at this time? I would appreciate any insight that Jerry or any of you might have. Thanks, Sandi

    2. I spent a feew weeks in Mercer Co. over the past several years. Linn's book is recommended by everybody including the local funeral homes. I did not talk with the trustees of the Princeton Cem. I was able to locate my greatgrandfathers grave, but it too is poorloy marked as the stone is worn to the extent that I will need to have the government repair or replace it. Good luck and what were the mames you are looking for? Thanks, Chuck

    1. [MOMERCER-L] Princeton Cemetery
    2. Does anyone have or know where a tract or plot location map of the Princeton Cemetery could be found? I have a couple of ancestors buried there, according to the Linn's county cemetery book. However, either they did not have monuments or the markers have deteriorated over time. Thanks! -Judy
