    1. [MOMERCER-L] Obituary: Evelyn Alley
    2. Lawrence May
    3. The Alley family was a founder of the "city" of Mercer in Mercer County. She operated the Cash Market on the south side of the square in Mercer for many years. I think it was closed down about 10 years ago. The obit is taken from the Princeton Post-Telegraph. My Mercer County ancestors are Elijah & Rhoda (Collins) Wiggins, James Robert Hodges, and the Wright family that came into Mercer County from Wayne Co., Iowa. I would be interested in corresponding with anyone who are descended from any of these. OBITUARIES Evelyn Alley (Stillwater, Okla.) Evelyn Barbara Alley, the former co-proprietor of Alley's Cash Market at Mercer, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001 at Stillwater, Okla., Medical Center. She was 95. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. at Lineville-Mercer Christian Church in Mercer, with Rev. Jack Stark officiating, under the direction of Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Service of Princeton. Burial will be in Early Cemetery in Mercer. The family will be available for visitation Friday at 10 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Tri-County Health Clinic, Highway 65 North, Box 552, Mercer, MO 64661. Mrs. Alley, daughter of Frank and Ida(Smith) Hoelscher, was born July 17, 1906 in Rockford, II1., and grew up in Rockford. She married William Houston Alley, better known as W. H., on July 13, 1930 in Byron, Ill. He preceded her in death on April 30, 1986. They lived in various Illinois cities where he was transferred by Montgomery Ward stores. She and her young daughters were moved to Mercer by her father-in-law, Bill Alley, when her husband joineded the Navy during World War II. Upon his return, they decided to make Mercer their home. When he died, she moved to Stillwater, Okla., to be near her daughters and lived there until her death. Mrs. Alley is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Alley and Barbara Stout; and a sister, Frances Hoelscher. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Opal Young and Pearl Marston.

Chuck, I'd like to find the grave for Hannah Morin in the Princeton Cemetery. There isn't a marker for her, either near her son (William Morin) and other relatives or near her brothers (Jacob John and Josephus J. Derry). However, there are some seemingly empty or unmarked adjacent places. Hannah is listed in Linn's cemetery book, p. 208. Possibly either her monument has "disappeared" and/or the listing was taken from one of the earlier cemetery compilations. Therefore, a cemetery plot map would be very helpful (necessary) to learn where she was buried. Does anyone know who is on the current board of directors? Thanks! -Judy
