Once in a while, we strike gold and it is worth the effort. You might also try Texas. If they were displaced by the Civil War (almost everyone was- there were only about 8 families left at the end) if they were southern sympathizers, they may have fled to Texas, the most common destination. My family fled to Sherman,TX and others from here were in Fannin County TX. That might give you a lead. If they were Northerners, no need to leave.
