Also old ones on the Fleming message board. I know there must be a connection to my family somewhere, but it has eluded me for several years. Someplace I have census and marriage info on some of those names. My Flemings were there for several of early 1900 censuses, but gone by the 1920 one I believe. However, Newton County was taken from McDonald County at some point, so look there too. My William and his second wife as well as his daughter Hallie Fleming (died young, probably of typhoid) are buried at the IOOF Cemetery in Neosho, Newton County, MO. Been there personally, although I could not find a headstone for Ladora. Don't know what's up with that. Did find William and Hallie. She died on January 15, 1900 in Barry Co., MO. They had 9 children. Their third child was my great grandmother Anna Francis Edens born August 28, 1864 in Davidson Co., TN I believe. 3. Sonja, dumber than a post--that is me. I always start at the beginning of my new messages, but this time, started at the newest and didn't see your message to me about the one I just sent you. I'm like a goose anymore: wake up in a new world every morning! 1. Re: [MOMcDona] New post office?
    2. Marilyn Carnell-Williams
    3. It makes me very sad. I grew up in Pineville & always loved it and wanted to return. Have tried hard to get people to share my vision of what it could be, but am apparently a very poor salesperson. Have devoted a lot of time and money to trying to make it a better place to live. Being Mayor was the most expensive "hobby" I ever had. I paid my own expenses & donated a lot of time and other things to the city, not to mention the grants written. It broke my heart and spirit when I was terrorized into quitting. I'm still recovering. Right now they are in the process of building a new fire and Marshall's station. I had hoped they would move all of City government there, tear down the current city hall on the square & thus expose the historic jail/archives building. The current plan will create a "good old boys" club with no civil oversight by the mayor and council. What an opportunity to play. The spent more than $50,000 remodeling the current city hall but didn't manage to make it fully handicap accessible - a requirement for decades - and no longer allow the public to use the restrooms. It makes you wonder. The current City Hall building is an old fire house and sheriff's office, neither of which is particularly well constructed and of no historic valued. How I wish they had never sold off the old Belle Starr Saloon movie house left over from filming Jesse James. It would have been an asset as well. However, if the space were cleared, it would make a nice little pocket park on the square that would be perfect to put the historic Rutledge courthouse upon. (It was donated to the county last year, but they haven't figured out how to transport it with out destroying it.) (As if there isn't knowledge out there if they would just inquire.) The courthouse on the square dates from 1871. It is the 12th oldest courthouse in the state & I suspect that the Rutledge one is the among the oldest since it is antebellum. Very few made it through the Civil War. In 1943, the powers that be elected to stucco the building and add the addition on the south side. Underneath is locally made brick & it could be restored if there was a will. It should be on the National Register of Historic Places. What a nice tourist attraction the square could be! Couple those things with developing a public spaces development program - farmer's markets, music, games and art co-op and it could really be something to be proud of and a real community center. Right now, many properties that could be generating income are empty or used for storage. Pineville looks more and more like a ghost town. The square area streets were paved a year or so ago, but instead of using brick or cobblestone that would be traffic calming & consistent with the age of the buildings, they used asphalt. Quick and slick. Also got rid of lots of parking places, to allow traffic to go through faster and easier. They just don't get it. When the freeway opens on August 30, it will slide even faster. At least the apparent "speed trap" will pretty well shut down. One of the ironies of outgrowing the 5,000 sq. ft. old courthouse. They built the new one exactly the same size and forgot to include vaults. It was obsolete before they opened it up. The new courthouse now has vaults and an addition, but neither one was designed to add additional floors, if needed. Funny that we could build a three story building in 1871, but apparently can't in the 20th and 21st centuries. The same thing is true of the school. Because they didn't own enough property by the current school, they bought land almost in Anderson to expand. Then, of course, they bought land for parking for the teachers. Funny it wasn't available for a school itself. I'll probably be criticized severely for these opinions, but I do care about the history of the county and hate to see things with great economic and public benefit swept away. It might be useful to have some discussion of these matters instead of ignoring them. I don't have the answers, but without public input, things won't get better. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Pat Brewer Sent: Saturday, August 04, 2007 9:30 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MOMcDona] New post office?
