Contact McDonald Co. Library at www.mcdonaldcountylibrary.org . They either have the records or will probably look them up. They were almost taken to the dump about 25 years ago, but my sister (the then librarian) rescued them.) About ten days ago I sent the following message to the three counties that I thought might have some information for me on James Stephens and his two wives. My questions have been partially answered! 1). James Stephens full name was Frank James Stephens, so his tombstone might be listed either way. So far, I have no knowledge where he is buried. All I know is that he was alive in 1880 (AGE 73) for the census and was in Benton Co., AR. 2). The Elizabeth Stephens (lst wife) is not the Elizabeth Stephens I referenced in my first message. I still don't know where she is buried. My initial guess is in McDonald County where her children are buried. 3) I have found out information, however, on the second wife. Apparently, Nancy Pendergraft was her married name before she married Stephens. It appears that she was the wife of J. J. Pendergraft in Barry County, MO. in 1860 (Sugar Creek Twp). Doe anyone know about this family? I have been told that her maiden name was Barnes (or Barns). Listed on the 1860 census in Barry Co., along with the J. J. Pendergraft family with Nancy as the wife, is a Heny T. Barns, age 11. My guess is that this may be Nancy's brother. Was there a Barns or Barnes family in Barry County, perhaps around Washburn? The Pendergraft name is spelled Pendergraff on this census. Kay Winter [email protected] Colorado Springs, CO ____________________________________________________________________________ _THIS WAS MY ORIGINAL POSTING: I am addressing this e-mail to the three counties in which I believe there may be someone who has researched this marriage. I am specifically researching James Stephens. I first found the Stephens family in Johnson County, MO. From there, they were in Benton County, MO (1850 census) then in Hickory County by the 1860 census. Frank James Stephens apparently was always known as James Stephens. His first wife was Elizabeth Dyer. They had at least 9 children, Joseph, Greenberry (our relationship is with him), Elisha, Lovett, Nancy, L., Andrew, William and Louisa. We are aware of the Confederate leanings of the Stephens family which caused them to leave Hickory County and go to McDonald County, perhaps in 1860 or shortly thereafter. I have researched these children and know what became of the oldest four siblings. My question is about the parents. In the 1860 census, James was 56 and Elizabeth was 53. They were in Hickory County. I have not found him on the 1870 census, but I am sure they had escaped to the SW corner of Missouri.McDonald County, probably. By the 1880 census, James was in Dickson Township, Benton County, AR with a new wife, and Elizabeth has perhaps died. I know that many of the family are buried in Roller Cemetery in McDonald County. The only Elizabeth Stephens listed in this cemetery that could possibly be her shows she was born October 22, 1858...If the tombstone is not very legible as indicated on the cemetery listing, this 1858 date could possibly by 1808, which would be about the correct date for her birth. That's a possibility as this Elizabeth is buried near the children of James. Back to the 1880 census in which James has a new wife. She is listed as Nancy Stephens. Living with them are apparently her two sons from a previous marriage, William C. and Ellis W. Pendergraff . Living next door is James' granddaughter and her husband (Mary and Jefferson Bowman) and child. So, I am sure this is the correct James Stephens. This 1880 census is in Dickson Township, Benton Co., AR. I found a J. J. Pendergraff in the 1860 census of Barry County, MO (Sugar Creek Twp..Washburn) who could possibly be her previous husband. I have no clue as to her maiden name. There are two children W.C and E.W. which exactly corresponds with their ages on the 1880 census. And his wife's name was Nancy. So far, so good. She is shown as age 25 in 1860 and 57 in 1880...oops! Now I realize women didn't want to tell their ages and someone may have guessed as to her age, but this is a little far fetched to be off by 12 years! I would really like to know where James Stephens is buried and where his two wives are buried, I attempted to look at cemetery listings but I am not that familiar with cemeteries and their locations, other than the Roller Cemetery in McDonald County. I found the Pendergraff name also spelled Pendergraft so I am not sure if they are the same family with different spellings. Because the county and state lines are very close together, all of these places could be near one another. I found lots of references on the rootsweb archives to the interactions between the two families, Stephens and Pendergraff, but none about these two specifically. If someone could help, I would appreciate it. Kay Winter Colorado Springs, CO

Cindy James Dyer Stephens is the oldest son of Greenberry Stephens and his wife, Nancy Lauranay Compton/Cumpton. My records show that he had 4 wives, the first being Mary Malinda Hall. The James Stephens I am looking for is the father of Greenberry Stephens. James Dyer Stephens was named for his grandfather and the maiden name of his grandmother Elizabeth Dyer. The mother of James Dyer, Nancy, is buried in Roller Cemetery in McDonald County. His father injured in the Civil war and eventually died in Indianapolis, IN. and is buried in the Confederate Mound in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. James Dyer Stephens is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mannford OK according to my records. His other wives were Martha, Anna Ihrig, and Lucinda Rogers. I know that James Stephens, the father of Greenberry and the grandfather of James Dyer, was alive in 1880 in Benton Co., AR with another wife, Nancy. Her name apparently was Pendergraff (she had been married to a Pendergraff before. The burial place of these two as well as his first wife is my question. The other location that people went to was the Newtonia area in Newton County. This was the site of two battles, but largely held by the Northern soldiers. The reason I think that they may have temporarily relocated in the war was because this area was decimated by both armies marching to and fro. By the end of the war there were fewer than 50 people in the county and they were women and children. The 17,000 CSA troops based in the SW part of the county had very little support and lived off the land (thus called Huckleberry Rangers) They took what they needed from the local people with or without permission. The Union troops were pretty much the same. Most people returned as soon as they possibly could, but it took several years for some families to return. As you probably know, some of the casualties of the Battle of Pea Ridge were buried in the Roller Cemetery, so that was an area of much conflict. Have you checked with the McDonald County library? www.mcdonaldcountylibrary.org ? They have extensive cemetery records and other local history resources. The library has an index of obituaries on line at their site & they also will answer reasonable inquiries. I have found that people fled McDonald County (almost no one was left living there by the end of the war) either to Johnson Co. MO (Little Dixie) or NE Texas - Sherman or Fannin County were popular destinations. You might check census data in the Texas area, especially if you found them in AR in 1880. Parts of my family fled to Sherman,TX and then were in Washington Co. AR in 1880. It took a few more years for them to migrate back to McDonald Co. I'm jumping in the middle of this because my gg grandmother married Tol Arnett, so am interested in that part of the family history. I learned this year that Frances (Fannie) Taylor Watkins Arnett's mother, Elizabeth, is buried at the Rocky Comfort Cemetery. I also think that Rice & Price were twins. I know someone who is very up on Coffee genealogy, but she isn't on the web. I will give her a call as soon as I can. Hi Margaret, this is Karen...Ollie's grt-granddaughter. I've been doing tons of research since we last talked. I found the death record of Chloe Adele Johnson born in Sullivan County, MO, which is the first child born of Tom & Nancy Johnson. And I don't think there is a grave around Thomas/Nancy in RC cemetery. I will check when I'm over there again. I went to the Pineville courthouse/library in June. Found some interesting info. I'm in the process of writing the Utter & Johnson family history & have promised Pineville & Neosho libraries a copy. I will call you tonight! I guess patience is a virtue. Here is most of the info I have. It has been so long that I have been unable to find some of my stuff and I have forgotten some of it. Possibly his wife Margaret born about 1802 in Indiana. Possible sister Mary born about 1837. Martha Jane Whitt DOB 1855 (exact date ?) in Putnam Co. Mo.Died 1944 and is buried in the GAR Cemetary Sulfur Springs, Ark. According to legend Simon served under General Sterling Price during the Civil War. Mrtha Jane Whitt was married 3 times. First was FNU Williams. I have no idea what happened to this guy or the marriage. In fact Williams is all the info I have. Second was a William Preston. Don't know much more than that except he is ggrandmothers father. He may have fallen off a scaffold while building a hotel in Noel, Mo. My Dad said he thought there may have been a rope around his neck when he fell but I think that was just his sense of humor. My grandmother Eulalah nee Preston was born in Tahlequah, Okla. Territory 5-15-1885 Died in Fresno Ca. 5-15-1985 her 100th birthday. She had 2 sisters by Martha Janes third husband Ball (no further info on him) One sister was Hal and she died a spinster the other was Cora. She had a boy and a girl. The only info I have on them is that he was supposedly killed in WW1. These sisters were very close and this closeness was guarded by Martha Jane. To my knowledge there were no other siblings. Eulalah, my grandmother, married James David Wentz and there were 6 children born of this union. This is about the gist of my info. Since Rocky Comfort is in McDonald Co., try the index of obituaries at the McDonald Co. Library www.mcdonaldcountylibrary.org. You might ask for help from them as well. They may have other files on the Johnson family as well. Rocky Comfort borders Newton county, so the Neosho Library is more likely to have information than Webb City of Joplin since they are in Jasper Co. I recently was delighted to find the gravestone of my great-great grandmother in the Rocky cemetery.
