My grandmother was a Woodard. Her mother was Kerry Francis Braziel who married John Adolphis Woodard son to George Washington (Wash) Woodard. Yes, he (Wash) was hanged, in front of his family, by "bushwhackers" in 1862. Check out the Barry Co site for lots of info on the Woodard and all their kin. We are looking for the location of Lanes Mill, reportedly in McDonald county. Thanks for the response. The only John Lane land patent I could find in that 3 county area is in NE1/4, NE/1,4 Sec. 10, T. 22N, R. 34W, which is McMillen township. It is in this area: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&ie=UTF8&ll=36.66151,-94.58506&spn=0.00141,0.00235&t=h&z=19&iwloc=addr http://msrmaps.com/map.aspx?t=2&s=12&lon=-94.58506&lat=36.66151&opt=1 Erie Goodman Township is 11.1 miles ENE of there, and Erie McNatt Township is 13.56 miles ENE of there. All on the places above are in McDonald county. Hopefully someone there can help us locate this place. > Loretta

Yes, many of the local papers are on microfilm. I don't know about 1906. Check the McDonald Co Library. I looked at their genealogy section and found only two Downs and they didn't match the date. I did find a Cordia Johnson who died on 3-16-1906. Since I had no first name, I wasn't sure if it was a match. The library site is www.mcdonaldcountylibrary.org. Phone number is 417-223-4468. You will find them very helpful. Once in a while, we strike gold and it is worth the effort. You might also try Texas. If they were displaced by the Civil War (almost everyone was- there were only about 8 families left at the end) if they were southern sympathizers, they may have fled to Texas, the most common destination. My family fled to Sherman,TX and others from here were in Fannin County TX. That might give you a lead. If they were Northerners, no need to leave. Some of our family members settled north of Dallas and still live there. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I checked the marriages and obits and they are for later dates (mostly 1900s and on). This is too late for my Chaneys. I will search in Oklahoma to see what I get from there. I know one of the granddaughters (who is my gggrandmother) went to Kansas and got married there, but the rest of them don't seem to be there. Isn't genealogy fun! I found 10 Cheneys in the marriage records - the earliest was 1883. Might be one of your family. Obits are also online there, but for some reason, I couldn't access them this morning. If they moved away, you might try Oklahoma records. They might have gone there for land when it opened up. It is on the McDonald Co. border.
