So see I already had the son Joseph Barnes in my database. He m. 27 Feb 1899 to Laura Isabell Riley. They're buried in Wentzel Cem. Laura was dau of Charles Riley & Susannah Cain - Susannah being sister of Lucinda Cain Oaks who m. #2 to widowed Jacob S. Giesler (father of Nancy Giesler m. Henry Barnes). Whew! Keeps the "merge" busy working on these folks. Now - I forgot to mention that Nancy Giesler shows her birthplace as Tennessee - well Jacob S. Giesler did not leave Sullivan Co., TN with his father John Sr. and siblings in 1837. He stayed behind and is on the 1840 census in Sullivan Co. but does arrive in MO before the 1850 census. Not sure why the delay. Jacob S. Giesler m. abt 1830 to Matilda _____? Nothing definate on her maiden name - clues we have, but no proof. There are court records in Crawford Co. when John Giesler Sr. died abt. 1846 settling his estate for years after and named his children. The Giesler name pronounced Geesler in MO & TN, but some now spell Geisler - my family changed to that. I found the pronunciation with the ss sound got written Gissler which with old handwriting became Giffler or Gifler and even Gipler because of the long 's'. And to confuse things even more the 'ie/ei' blended together and became Gusler or Guffler. These Giesler still spoke German in the home when they came to Missouri and Nancy Anna Giesler Gray taught her children in that language, it's said. They were of the Brethren Church in PA and Tennessee. Pam Smith Dallas, OR Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
