Steve Pipitone: I checked the histories that I have available and did not find any reference to a blacksmith shop. But perhaps some of this information will be helpful: I did not find Safe in the index of the Maries County Missouri three volume history published in 1989, 1990 and 1991. Goodspeed's "History of Maries County" 1889 Edition states that "Safe has a mill and a store, owned by G. H. Essmann, the postmaster." King writes in his "History of Maries County" that "Coppedge's Steam Mill, at what is now Safe, was built and operated by members of the Coppedge family until 1864, when it was sold to Moses Lamoreaus. It is not known whether or not it was a successor to a 'horse power' mill, but it was one of the very earliest mill sites in the county after Pay Down." In "A History of The Post Offices and Postmasters of Maries County, Missouri" we find that "The Safe Post Office was established in 1886, when George H. Essmann was appointed postmaster, effective June 26, 1886." The post office was maintained until 1958 and the postmasters were Aerhart Koegel, Louis Langenberg, Hermann Essmann, Edward Langenberg, Charles E. Biles, Thomas L. Biles, William T. Copeland, Rosa Arnold, Christopher C. Copeland, Chrissie C. Copeland, and Donald R. Copeland, both Biles more than once. Neither of these sources mentions a blacksmith shop. Descendants of any of the people listed may have knowledge about Safe and what businesses may have been there. On our farm we had need of the services of a blacksmith until well into the 1950s. Hope this helps. William L.
