BREUER, PROMINENT LAWYER, BURIED AT ROLLA Louis H. Breuer, widely known Rolla attorney and member of a prominent Gasconade County family, died Wednesday night at the Phelps County Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for several days. Mr. Breuer who recently observed his 85th birth anniversary, had been in failing health for the past five years. A former United States district attorney for eastern Missouri and holder of numerous governmental, civic and political posts, Mr. Breuer was a retired member of the Rolla law firm of Breuer, Northern and Crow. Born at Red Bird Born at Red Bird on August 10, 1879, Mr. Breuer was educated in the public schools of the county and attended Washington University, St. Louis, from which he graduated with a law degree in 1903. He was admitted to the Missouri Bar the same year and began the practice of law at Rolla in the firm of Lorts and Breuer. In 1922, Mr. Breuer was appointed general counsel of the Missouri Public Service Commission in Jefferson City by Gov. Arthur Hyde and served in that capacity until 1925. The next year he was named United States district attorney for Eastern Missouri by President Calvin Coolidge. In 1930 he was reappointed to another four-year term by President Herbert Hoover. Mr. Breuer returned to private practice in Rolla in 1934 and remained at Rolla until the time of his death. Served as Mayor In 1916 he was elected mayor of Rolla and in 1917 he volunteered for the Army, even though he was over age for the draft, and entered service as a private. He served until 1919, after resigning his post as mayor, and was released as a captain. The veteran lawyer was active in Republican circles. He was a member of the Republican state committee from 1908 to 1912 and from 1918 to 1922. He was a delegate to the GOP convention at Cleveland in 1924. Prominent in legal circles of the state, Mr. Breuer was a member of the American Bar, the Missouri Bar and the 19th Judicial Circuit Bar Associations. He was a member of the Board of Governors, Missouri Bar, from 1944 through 1950. He was appointed a member of the Missouri Resources and Development Commission in 1946 and served until 1952. Long active as a Rotarian, Mr. Breuer was a charter member of the Rolla club and a past president, and served as governor of the Rotary International District No. 135 in the early 1940s. Former City Attorney He was a former president and member of the board of education at Rolla, also Rolla and Belle city attorney, and during World War II, he served as chairman of the Phelps County Selective Service board. He was a life long member of the Christian Church. He was a member of Rolla Lodge No. 213 AF & AM and served the lodge as worshipful master. He was a member of the Missouri Consistory Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, having received the 32nd degree and had been a member of the Abou Ben Adam shrine. Surviving are his wife, Mary Louise, of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Melvin Nickel of Chicago; a son, William B. Breuer of St. Louis; a sister, Mrs. Stella Kinkead of St. James, and a number of grandchildren. Nine brothers and sisters have died. Funeral services were Saturday at the Rolla First Christian Church with the Rev. Charles A. Willbanks officiating. Masonic rites by the American Legion followed at Rolla Cemetery.
