His "job" was to gather firewood to burn him if the Indian died. He got well but John was kept captive, gaining the confidence ot one Indian enough to go trapping with him and hold down the end of a prypole while the Idian set a trigger under a rock. One day, as King puts it in his book, The History of Maries Ct., John jumped off the pole while the brave was under the rock and "effectually disposed of him." He ran, was chased by Indians and dogs. An Indian sat on the log where he was hiding and dogs came into the log. Apparently they were used to him and didn't bark. He got away, got his hands free the 3rd day, and ate his first meal, a four-foot black snake! Finally made it back to fort. He didn't come into Maries Ct.
