    3. Most of my family had left MO by the 1840s, but the language lingers on. I was watching a program on the education channel some years ago about Appalachia (sp) sayings and dialect, it's history, changes and so forth, most of it is Scottish or Irish old language. When it was over, all I could say was, I hadn't traveled far with language, I thought everyone talked that way. When I was working for the local electrical company some years back, I summered in a department that took care of customer problems with either phone calls or letters. The supervisor after one class remarked "I just love listening to you talk, your so archaic" I still haven't decided whether to be insulted or complimented.
