Cousin, I know there is no Indian blood in Bridget Kerr, nor Neil McKeever (unless they swam to Ireland). Now, froom my readings, the french and Indians did intermingle with our folk in Maries. The Kerrs and McKeevers were pure Ireland. They did marry and mingle with those of the native natur Visitation Church records show that my Lucretia Benton Kerr was (french /Indian), and Mary Boudroux (french Indian) was a sponser for the McKeevers and Kerrs baptimals. Grandma Kerr was raped several times during the civil war times, by "Carpet Baggers", don't know what/they were. So , any off spring could have been mixed Steven Piper ----- Original Message ----- From: <nsettles@csj.net> To: <MOMARIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 30, 2001 5:54 PM Subject: [MOMARIES] Re: Briggs, McKeever, Duncan > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VKB.2ACE/2.221.1 > > Message Board Post: > > My mother told me that there was Indiana blood but I do not know in what line? Steve: I too am descended from the Kerrs and McKeevers. I was intrigued by your reference to "Carpet Baggers" during the Civil War. Did they possibly mean bushwhackers or Jayhawkers? I know that the bushwhackers were somewhat active in the Maries County area and if they were active and could be tracked down that usually meant the Jayhawkers would be active there as well. Most of my research points to a relatively clean war throughout Missouri, i.e., although there was much in the way of murder and theft women were generally left alone. The explanation I have been given for this is that even if the combatants were on different sides they knew each other fairly well and molesting one's loved ones invited repercussions from the other side. That is not to say it did not occur. During Price's Raid (1964-65) there are documented cases of women in Franklin County being accosted if not actually raped. The term Carpet Bagger came into vogue after the Civil War and usually referred to a Northerner sympathizer who loaded everything they owned into a cloth suitcase and used political connections to move into conquered Confederate territory for personal, political or economic gain. The excesses of carpet baggers was one of the prime causes for the rise of the Ku Klux Klan in the southern states. Jim, I have truely heard both terms used, by up to seven different family members version.I could not tell the difference between the groups. How are you related? Bridget,Hugh,William,Patrick, Mary Ann,and James KERR were siblings who came over from the Emerald Isl. between 1845-1870s I come from Patrick Kerr who married Margaret Lucretia Benton (Also said to have been a rape child-French-Indian). Check page 308 of Maries county book-Hair COAL BLACK til she died at 70. (Child of Nancy Skaggs and Mathew Benton). As you know Bridget and Neil married in St. Louis in 1846. William came over with wife Bridget in the 1860s owned land in St.Louis and MAries Counties;Buried in Visitation with Neil & Bridget McKeever. Hugh & Rose came over with a couple of kids in the 1870s ,Not much info on their whereabouts after death, have some childrens' info. Mary Ann married James McKown, their living heirs are in Gravios Mill Mo. Napier family. I have plenty on the family here;Courious though; your Bridget Kerr McKeever claimed Antrim, Hugh claimed Northern Ireland(rejected the Queen on immigration papers) William claimed Antrim, Mary Ann Antrim, but Patrick claimed Limerick, JAmes Wales. The proper spelling of the name is KERR, which is techically Scot; and they were Catholic (In Northern Ireland???) I am pursuing Kelt history during this time to understand such scattering of the family.. Any help you can lend to me about your grandma Bridget would sure help me focus on our Ireland townships?
