Can you give us some dates for Peter and Sarah? -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Saturday, April 05, 2008 4:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [MOMARIES] Peter Walter and Sarah Neisler This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Peter owned the Paydown Mill at one point. He basically fell off the face of the earth, and his son John Walter is buried in Travis Cemetery and wife Mary Steen is in Liberty near my other relations and are my ancestors. However I see that Daniel Crider his step-father is buried in Barbarick Goers Cemetery. Nothing online shows if anyone has attempted transcribing this cemetery. Any clue as to where it is in conjunction to Hwy 28 and 42 in Belle Missouri. Any clues would be great as I am heading back to Missouri in May and planning a trip down to Belle (my mother's family is there). Yes, they married in 1915 in Maries County. My list only shows the year, not date and month, but their record is on page 219 of Book E. You should be able to get a copy of the license with that data. Sharon: The Clifty Cemetery can be reached either from Vienna or Dixon by following Missouri Hwy 28 to Missouri Highway "W" and turn east (left if from Vienna, right if from Dixon). Follow Highway "W" about 2 3/4 miles to County Road 501 and turn right, the cemetery will be on your right about 1/10 mile from "W". The following is a quote from "The Cemeteries of Maries County, MO", 1986, by Mozelle Hutchison and Gail Howard: "This area is called Clifty Dale. Nearby is the Clifty Hollow Natural Bridge, one of the most popular in Missouri for photographers, even though it requires a mile walk to reach it. The term "clifty" exemplifies a preservation of archaic English. Walker's 1823 dictionary lists clift as a synonym for cliff, but by 1864, Webster considered clift obsolete. (This and more about Clifty Hollow Natural Bridge in "Geological Wonders and Curosities of Missouri" by Thomas R. Beveridge. He quotes Broadhead (1871, p.16) in one of the early reports of the Missouri Geological Survey, who described it from field work done in 1857 and regarding its setting said: "A perfectly clear stream of water courses through this valley. The bottoms near are overspread with a dense growth of trees and vines, among which I notices the Muscadine grape. The valley at this point, being shut in by its perpendicular cliffs, with not a path to guide the traveler through the dense thickets, is wildly picturesque and romantic in its loneliness." I grew up in Maries County and obsolete or not we used clift and cliff interchangably in daily conversation. Good hunting. Perhaps you have a traditional story passed down you would like to try to prove or disprove; maybe an ancestor is present in one census and is missing the next - are you curious what really happened? Or are you satisfied with the "he must have died" explanation? In researching my own family, this type of research became my passion. I am talking about old court cases and the testimonies. These treasures are not available on microfilm and they have never been published. Cases range from civil actions between individuals, divorces, replenishments, ejectments, suits on notes to cases in which the State of Missouri is bringing charges. This type of case could be anything from selling whiskey without a license, to larceny, forgery, perjury, adultery, bigamy, robbery, assault and battery, rape, incest, murder and everything in between. Sound interesting? If so, go ahead and send me your name(s)and any background you would like to share. I will be glad to take a look and see if there are any related court cases. If there isn't anything, it won't cost you a dime. If there are items of interest and you would like to have them transcribed, I would be glad to do it for you. The price for doing the transcription would depend on the size of the case(s). Are you curious? Who knows? We may find hidden treasure!! My great-great-great grandmother Sarah Shockley Copeland owned one slave, Dolly. Dolly was a child of 12 when my grandmother purchased her. Dolly was born in KY and my grandmother more than likely purchased her somewhere along the Ohio River as she traveled by boat toward ST. Louis. Dolly did not leave the plantation until 1894. When my grandmother's name changed from Shockley to Copeland - so did Dolly's. Dolly had two children by my Grandmother's step-son. Only one, a girl, Nancy, grew to adulthood. When Nancy and Dolly left Maries County they went to Westphalia where Nancy married a Mathews. I have never been able to track them after that - though I do know in the early 1900's Dolly and her daughter were living in Jefferson City close to some folks who knew her from Maries County. These folks would come visit at my grandmother's old place, which was owned by someone else by then - but the owner knew my grandmother and Dolly - so the visitors from Jefferson City w! ould tell about them living on the same street. I have tried to find descendant's of Dolly's but never had any luck. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Anna Brewer: Sorry, I don't have a Hannah Poe in any of my records. Barnabas Madison Poe was the son of Adam Poe and Elizabeth Cochran (not her maiden name), born in Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1787. Do you have an Obit.? When the weather improves I can visit the Library in town and see if I can find a marriage and/or an Obituary. Burl's wife was named Anna Catherine, do not know her maiden name and she remarried after Burl died. I owned and worked in a Beauty Salon in Mt. Vernon for many years. Geneva was one of my long time loyal customers. Gretta ----- Original Message ----- From: "William L. Gretta: Thank you very much. Yes, I would love to have an obituary for Burl or his wife, either one or both, copy cost and postage to be reimbursed, of course. I have an obit for Boyd Pointer, an older half-brother but that is the only one I have of the family at the moment. Another half-brother, Frank Courtwright is still living in Elmwood, Illinois and I'm going to write him this weekend and see if I can get a response. The weather has been a bit nasty up there (I live in NW Louisiana) recently. I'm wishing that it would stop raining here long enough for me to finish working my flower beds and getting them ready for the season. My wife and I will be traveling to Missouri the first week in March. We have appointments in St. Louis, were we lived for 25 years and Dad's birthday is March 3. He's in a nursing home in Rolla. Hope all is well with you. Thank you again. Bill Schwegler --- "Gretta J. Bolien" <[email protected]> wrote: > Do you have an Obit.? Bob Prater: Thank you for the information. In your Courtwright research do you have anything related to a J.D. Courtwright? He married Martha Virginia Hancks on May 11, 1890 in Osage County, Missouri and was the father of Charles Courtwright, the one in my original query. Charles was born in 1889 at Summerfield, Jefferson Township, Osage County, Missouri. I appears that J.D. and Martha got the cart before the horse somewhat. The only likely candidate that I can come up with in the Missouri Census records is a Judson Courtwright, age 12 in 1880, in the household of T. B. Gray, Osage Township, Cole County, Missouri along with two girls named Laura and Annie Courtwright. They were apparently sisters and brother to Nancy Gray, the wife of T.B. Gray. Thanks again for your help.
