Author: ljames621 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.maries/2303/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks to Jim Heady of San Antonio, several graves in Miller and Maries County which were previously unmarked, now have markers. In Miller County: Thomas Ready, Eldon Cemetery; Ruth Clark Boyd, Wickham Cemetery. Also one large stone was placed in the Boyd/Clark cemetery with the following names: Robert Boyd; Sicily Langford Weimmer, w/o James Prior Clark; Garcie, Sydren Rivers, and Fred children of Thomas Logan Clark and Della Belle Roark; John Patterson Clark(Hoppin) and his wife Elizabeth; Alexander Clark, Sr and his wife Minerva Davidson; John Patterson Clark, Jr (who disappeared in 1876); and William Gayland (friend of John Clark) In Maries County: Mary Ann Cowan Helton, Stokes Cemetery; Sarah Heady Crosby, Macedonia Cemetery. The Entwistle Cemetery which lies just off Highway 63 North across from County Road 302 (Paydown Road) was partially cleared and fenced with a gate and a large arched metal sign atop the gate which reads "Entwistle". One large stone has been erected in remembrance of his ancestors: Samuel, Thomas, Sarah Jane, John Franklin, Alex Scott and Mary Entwistle; and Leona, Vinnie Octavia and Easter Cantrell Parker. Also listed is a "child of wayfaring strangers" because we found out Mrs. Entwistle allowed a young couple who was passing through to bury their child there. Author: ljames621 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.maries/2302/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Revis Rock is a huge rock which stands in the Gasconade River at a location below Paydown and before the railroad bridge. I have only been to it one time, many years ago, and remember being told it fell from the bluff to land there. It may be in Osage or Maries County - county lines are not clear to me when on the river - but either way it is very close to the Maries Osage line. Now that I have gotten interested in history, I wonder if anyone knows how the rock got its name? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You might want to try cemetery records for Maries county and possibly Miller county. Since he was killed on the Crismon property he may have been buried nearby unless his family was contacted and they came to remove his body. That fact may have been published in the paper as well because murder always makes good press. Good luck! I would love to hear the outcome of this mystery. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: blackw146 Surnames: Sherrill, Blackwell, Nail, Crismon, Owen, Newbery, Mitchel, Tyree Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.maries/2301/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Located this article in the Historical Newspaper site: Can be viewed at the Historic Missouri Newspaper Project website Rolla Express Monday April 8,1861 page 2 col 1: MURDER: We learn that a brutal murder was perpetrated last Monday evening. The facts are about these: A man named Sherrel was returning from a grocery, and passing by a field belonging to James Crissman, he discovered two men, one, his brother-in-law Wm. Nail and one named Blackwell ploughing when he stopt and commenced abusing Nail. Nail, seeing Sherrel was intoxicated, went off. Sherrel then commenced abusing Blackwell and threatened to shoot him. It is said Blackwell had an ox whip in his hand and was in the act of striking with it when Sherrel shot him. The ball entered the front part of his head and passed through the brain killing him instantly. Sherrel was arrested but we have not learned what disposition has been made of the case.--Missourian Later on: June 3 page 2 col 1: Circuit Court at Vienna-The Court commenced its Session on the 20th with a pretty full docket. The Criminal docket was nearly clear on account of the absence of prisoners who not being willing to run the risk of a trail, had taken LEG BAIL for greater security. Newbery, charged with felonious assault, with intent to kill J. R. Owen some two years since and who was out on bail, forfeited his bond. CHARLES SHERRILL, charged with killing young BLACKWELL had escaped from Osage County jail together with MITCHEL, the murderer of MR. TYREE. In 1860 Census, Maries Co, Miller Twp, the Nail's and Sherrel's were neighbors. Charles Sherrel was a laborer and believe he was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Sherrel. I would like to find out the name of the "Blackwell" that was killed. There were no Blackwell's enumerated in Maries Co in 1860.
