Wow....Mary Ann Gray that was married to Albert Curtis (he was the son of William Curtis and later he married Susan Ehrhart Moreland widow of Jacob Moreland). Samuel Gray who married Sarah Margaret Shinkle (she was the daughter of Philip Shinkle and Emma Curtis (daughter of William Curtis)). I found that Sarah died in Maries County in 1926. Why were they in Madison County, Indiana in 1880. Well, there are strong ties there....William Curtis (docter), Philip Shinkle,Samuel Shinkle, Ellias Hollinsworth, Joseph Barnes (father of George Barnes), and Peter Ehrhart were all there about 1830ish to 1840ish. A court house fire about 1880, makes it hard to find any records but some land records exists, of course the census, and the early history of Madison County (Andersontown). In Everett King's History of Maries county, he mentions that they seem to run back to Indiana...well, I think he meant Madison County, Indiana. Question...I have Susan Barnes (sister to Joseph and daughter of Henry & Nancy Barnes) 1st married M C Riley....I have seen trees that this could be Marida Columbus..census says Mary C Riley...anyway is this son of Charles Riley & Susannah Cain? Susan's 2nd husband was Dan Woods and 3rd husband was William T Williams I know that the Ehrharts were of German descendant from York County, Pennslyvania. So see I already had the son Joseph Barnes in my database. He m. 27 Feb 1899 to Laura Isabell Riley. They're buried in Wentzel Cem. Laura was dau of Charles Riley & Susannah Cain - Susannah being sister of Lucinda Cain Oaks who m. #2 to widowed Jacob S. Giesler (father of Nancy Giesler m. Henry Barnes). Whew! Keeps the "merge" busy working on these folks. Now - I forgot to mention that Nancy Giesler shows her birthplace as Tennessee - well Jacob S. Giesler did not leave Sullivan Co., TN with his father John Sr. and siblings in 1837. He stayed behind and is on the 1840 census in Sullivan Co. but does arrive in MO before the 1850 census. Not sure why the delay. Jacob S. Giesler m. abt 1830 to Matilda _____? Nothing definate on her maiden name - clues we have, but no proof. There are court records in Crawford Co. when John Giesler Sr. died abt. 1846 settling his estate for years after and named his children. The Giesler name pronounced Geesler in MO & TN, but some now spell Geisler - my family changed to that. I found the pronunciation with the ss sound got written Gissler which with old handwriting became Giffler or Gifler and even Gipler because of the long 's'. And to confuse things even more the 'ie/ei' blended together and became Gusler or Guffler. These Giesler still spoke German in the home when they came to Missouri and Nancy Anna Giesler Gray taught her children in that language, it's said. They were of the Brethren Church in PA and Tennessee. Pam Smith Dallas, OR Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. We only had a few hours and part of that was spent just finding cemeteries. We met an elderly man who knew much of Maries Co. history and he gave us directions to Carnes Campground which if I remember correctly was by the Little Tavern River, but that branch was called Carnes Creek, after Jehu. The man said Jehu was buried there. There were many broken stones that were not readable and many graves had sunk. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I "think" alot of folks were missed in that census....can't find them but they are there in 1870....and I have read others that think some were missed in the census unless they all moved and then moved back. Anyway, in 1870 census of Maries County, Henry and Nancy Barnes are there very close to George and Elizabeth Barnes. In 1880 census, they are in the same area but not as close. From the death certificates...James Wesley Barnes who died in 1952 in Maries County--parents are Henry Barnes & Nancy E Geisler, Susan E Williams who died 1948 in Phelps County--parents John H Barnes & Nancie E Geasler, and George W Barnes who died 1943 in Crawford --parents Henry Barnes & Nancy Giesler. I can't find their marriage...guessing about 1859 since first child born 14 Nov 1860. Thanks for additional information about the Gieslers......it seems that many of them were moving to Howell County. I will checked that Mariah Airhart. The Ehrhart name was so misspelled....Arhart, Ahart, Erhart, Earhart, Erheart, Erhardt... Cathy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Giesler who was brother of my grgrgrandfather John Giesler Jr.who m. Elizabeth Loudermilk. There are other Airhart, Erhart etc. connections also - Nancy Ann Giesler, (sister of Jacob S. & John Jr.)married Martin Gray and they moved to Howell Co., MO coincidentally and are there in 1870. Their son Jacob m. Mariah Airhart who is believed to be dau of Michael Airhart (sp?) of Miller Co., MO. I do see on the 1860 Census of Maries Co. household #690 there is H. Barnes 24 b. IN and wife Nancy 22 b. TN. I'm guessing this is the couple you mean. I did not have that marriage. I know that Jacob S. For the past 31 years, Mrs. Schulte made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Kleffner. Mrs. Schulte was known in this community for her piety and kindness, for she had a kind word and smile for everyone who came in contact with her, and was always ready to lend a helping hand until the feebleness of old age overtook her. A fine tribute to the departed was in evidence at the funeral when the Church edifice was crowded with sympathizers. The body was in charge of Undertaker, Herman Strope, of Meta. Funeral services were held in Guardian Angel Church Wednesday morning. After a Requiem High Mass and services, the remains were laid to rest in the parish cemetery. We sympathize profoundly with the bereaved children and relatives. Those in attendance at the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Heiman, Mr. Herman Rehagen, Mrs. Anna Doerhoff and son, Mrs. Frank Kemna and family, all of St. Elizabeth, Missouri.
