Thank you, Judy, for the wonderfully informative story you sent on John Thompson Powers. So, he was married three times! That is a lot for that time in history, but I have found that men of that era seem to remarry soon after a wife dies (or divorce). Elizabeth Ferrier was John Thompson Powers first wife. She was born 22 Sep 1804 in TN. She died 3 Dec 1864 in Maries County. They married about 1825, probably in Montgomery County (another courthouse fire!). After her death he married Mary Ann whose maiden name MAY BE Darmon. She died 14 Aug 1873 in Maries County. After her death, he married Elizabeth Henson Wild, a widow. In 1888 John filed suit in Maries County Circuit Court for a divorce. He claims she left him 2 Jun 1887. She crossfiled, claiming he sold all of his property to his daughter, Catherine Dodds, and that left him without any assets that she could claim for alimony. On 13 Feb 1888 his daughter, Catherine Dodds, soninlaw John Dodds, Rev Joseph David, Robert Krone, David Renfrew, W. S. Dodds, James Rigsby and Matilda Rigsby (She is a granddaughter of John T. Powers, James is her husband) and T. Powers (James T. Powers, John's only son) went to court and filed an affadavit saying he was not competent to handle his own affairs. There are two pieces of paper from Jury Forement stating the jury had found him incompetent (insane) but neither is dated. But, on 1 Aug 1887 James T. Powers as guardian and curator filed an inventory of John's assets. The following day, 2 Aug, they had his sale. (On the sale were two books sold to son James, but no books were on the 1 Aug inventory. Could one have been a bible? As John was both a Physician and a Preacher I would surely expect to find at least one bible, perhaps a large family one, and perhaps a smaller one he could carry around with him on his calls. There are a great many marriages in the Maries County records which show him as the Minister.) By 1887, John was 81 years old, and probably senile. Elizabeth Wild was 30 years younger, and probably not willing to care for a senile old man, thus the divorce. His children were unwilling to take in him in, and that makes me wonder if perhaps he got violent at times? For what ever reason, he spent the balance of his life in the State Asylum at Nevada MO. Haven't been able to find where those records went when it closed, but I would really like to read his file. In Feb 1894, he died, thus ending a long career as a man who cared for a man's soul as well as his body. Send you email and I will send you the source for the info - it's to lengthy to give here. I have no idea whether Elizabeth was maiden name Ferrier or if she had a previous marriage but do believe this info is correct based on the fact. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mary E.
