While moving into a new house, I came across a file I had lost more than twenty years ago. Included are: (1) A copy of one Gilbert Crismon's application for 'Pension for Ex-Confederate Soldiers'. It was signed by Gilbert on June 12, 1913. Apparently he was subsequently asked for more evidence to support the pension claim. (2) A copy of a hand written letter by Gilbert on July 19, 1913. In this letter he provides information such as when and where he enlisted, his commanding officers (one was Issac Crismon), the battles he was engaged in, and the names of three prisons where he had been held prisoner. Gilbert states his age to be 73 at this time. Of course, that means he was born about 1840. (3) Gilbert included a copy of a 'Missouri Soldiers (1861-1865) War Between The States' document confirming that Gilbert Crismon enlisted in the Confederate Army on October 24, 1862. (4) A copy of a letter from the state of Missouri Adjutant General to the War Department Adjutant General dated July 29, 1913, asking for all records available pertaining to the pension application. (5) A copy of the War Department reply dated August 5, 1913, confirming that indeed, Gilbert Crismon's pension claim is valid. (6) In the upper right hand of the application ((1) above), is a stamp noting approval of the pension on August 20, 1913. I found it amazing how quickly our government reacted to and processed this claim - only two months and eight days. I'll bet it would not happen today, even with our online computer systems. I discussed these wonderful documents with a Gilbert descendant back then and he told me Gilbert's pension was $17.00 per month. I pass this information on to the list and offer to email to those interested a digital copy of the documents. The file will be in the Adobe PDF format. The Adobe PDF program is available on the Internet at no cost (www.adobe.com). A note of caution. To use the Adobe program you must have installed a PostScript driver on you PC. You do not need a PostScript printer in order to install the driver. The driver is available within any Windows operating system. Bob Crismon

The person shot in DeVere's story was Francis (Frank) Elsey's first wife not mentioned in his biography. He had married 2 May 1861 in Miller County Missouri to Albina Page. Meg
Shirley and Carolyn, Thanks for the biography of Frank Elsey. We have been talking about hatred that existed because of the Civil War. The Elsey family was on the receiving of this hatred. Just over into Miller County from Maries county is a place called "Elsey's Praire" Just east of Iberia about 5 miles there is a Hwy TT that joins Hwy 42 coming from Vienna. ON the eastern side of Hwy TT at that juction there is a 1/2 mile square piece of land called "The Elsey Praire". I am sure these Elseys are related to Frank. The Berrys lived on down the road from the praire, Berry's School is still there. One of the Elseys was shot by the local bushwackers and when they sent someone over to Maries County for a doctor, the doctor was killed too. The Elseys had to flee to Tennessee and Arkansas. No one would sell them anything or help them so they had to leave. LIST, I have added a picture of Peggy to the page and under MY CONTENTS there is a little autobiography of Peggy's life in genealogy. Use the arrows around Peggy's picture to center it etc. Peggy has sent me more articles for the web page. Will try to spend more time on it. The average article takes me two hours to type. I type with two fingers and I never know which two fingers that will be. This week I have been in touch with the main man at the Iberia American Legion about making copies of "The Miller County Militia" picture for sale as a donation to the American Legion. The problem was that the picture was too big to get copied at any of the commercial places. It's about 20 inches wide by 17 deep. To get his picture reduced enough to get copies had to be done by someone who had the equipment and the skill. We didn't want to lose any of the quality of this old picture or distort the faces. I took care of this problem by going to the newspaper. I knew they had the equipment. The American Legion has their month meeting this coming Monday and it will be up to them what happens now. Will keep you posted on this. DeVere

Well, you were holding out on us. You knew more than it was just in MO. The Franklin county Dutch Hollow is about 1.5 miles SW of Anaconda, on the north side of Meramec River. The St. Louis county Dutch Hollow is a more likely candidate. It's actually the town of Hollow (aka Dutch Hollow), which is located 2.5 miles SW of the junction of HW T and HW 100 just west of Pond, MO. It's on HW 100. You'll pass Fox Creek and then 2 miles further SW is Hollow. It's only 1.5 miles east of the Franklin county line. Transcribed by Laura Paxton. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GEORGE H. DAVIS George H. Davis of Blackwater township a prosperous farmer and stockman, ha= s established the well-merited reputation of being one of the leading hog breeders in this section of the state. He has been interested in the hog business since he was a boy. He gives special attention to breeding Chester White and Poland China hogs. In addition to his success as a breeder of pure-blood hogs, he also feeds hogs for the market on an extensive scale. Mr. Davis is a native of Missouri. He was born in Maries County, April 13 1856, a son of Granaway and Nancy Jane (Smith) Davis and is the youngest of their nine children, three of whom are living. The parents were both native= s of Kentucky. They came to Missouri at an early day and the father died in Maries County, about 1868, aged 45 years and the mother died in Saline County in 1874, aged 54 years. They were both descendants from a long line of American ancestors which dates back in this country to Colonial times. George H. Davis was reared on a farm and received his education in the district schools. His father died when George was about twelve years of age= , and it fell to his lot and his brothers', to assist their mother in the support of the family. Thus he began hard work at an early age and was of necessity denied many opportunities enjoyed by the average boy, even of his time. Shortly after the death of his father, the family removed to Webster County MO, where the mother rented a farm which she operated with the assistance of George and his brother. In 1871, George H. Davis came to Pettis County and settled in Heath's Creek township where he worked rented land until 1880. He then bought a farm east of Houstonia in partnership wit= h his borther. About eight years later, he sold this farm and bought his present place in Blackwater township. He owns 382 acres of well improved land and is one of the successful farmers and stockment of Blackwater township.=20 Mr. Davis was united in marriage, December 25 1877, with Miss Maria Jane Hill, a native of Saline County Missouri, born March 4 1855. She is a daugther of Ewing and Maria (Caghorn) Hill, both natives of Kentukcy. To this union were born the following children: Edgar E., Clarence E., Robert E., all of whom died in infancy; and Harry E., who is now engaged in farmin= g the home place in Balckwater township. He married Fay Bullock of Sweet Springs, Missouri. To Harry E and Fay (Bullock) Davis have been born one child, Meredith Jane. Mrs. Davis, wife of George H. Davis departed this lif= e September 28 1913.=20 Mr
Dad was 8 when the photo was taken, & that's how old he was when his dad passed away. Seems like they were living in either St. Albans or Allenton when Grandpa died. So I think both of those little towns MIGHT be considered St. Louis County. I know Allenton is, but not sure of St. Albans. But then again...Allenton might have been Franklin at that time! I know Eureka stretched out to claim all those almighty tax dollars. Soon little Allenton will no longer exist. It will be Wiped away like St. Albans! The year would have been around 1925.
