Does anyone know if there have been any transcriptions of the 1860 and 1870 Maries Census? And if so, how/where a look up can be obtained? Thanks. Penny PENNYPEACE@prodigy.net
The 1860 census was published by Wanda Hodge, but is now out of print. I wrote to her about 6 months ago asking for permission to put it online on the Maries County page but she said no, she had plans for it. The 1870 has been transcribed twice. Once by Joan Kunkel, and I believe is long out of print. The second transcription was only copied for a few people and never published for sale. I think it was done by a member of the society as a gift to them. I have both and can do a lookup for you, Judy ----- Original Message ----- From: PENNY <PENNYPEACE@prodigy.net> To: <MOMARIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2001 1:37 PM Subject: [MOMARIES] CENSUS TRANSCRIPTIONS > Does anyone know if there have been any transcriptions of the 1860 and 1870 > Maries Census? Bob: I am very interested in Ira Nelson and Sophia Dill (I have never seen her name written as Suzanah). I am not a descendent but I have family connections to the Dill's and the Nelson's. Here is an excerpt from something that was written primarily about JoAnn's sister Rachel Nelson, in the Maries County County/Family History Book, Volume II, submitted by Pat Kroeger: -------------------------------------- [excerpt from page 350, ] Rachel E. Nelson was born at Clifty Dale September 12, 1856, daughter of Sophia Dill and Ira Nelson who was a farmer. She was orphaned at an early age, her father having died in Kansas on his way to the gold fields. It is not known how or when her mother died. Rachel went to live with her brother James who married Serena Evaline Eads. She also lived, at times, with Lewis and Jane Eads who were Serena's parents. James was a farmer and also carried the mail between Vienna and Hayden. Her sister Mary married William Copeland, and JoAnn married Phillip Bowsman. Rachel, or Lizzy as she was known, married John Westley Graham, the son of George W. and Lorinda Graham. [end of excerpt] ----------------------------------------------- Also, in Vol III of the Maries County Pictorial/Family History, the same Pat Kroeger submitted a photograph in which your ancestor JoAnn Nelson Bowsman Gilbert is present. Please let me know if you do not have this photograph and I will scan it and send it to you. Bob, I would very much like to share info with you, particularly any info you have about Ira and Sophia. I am a Nelson descendent and there is much that is unknown about some of the Nelson's and Dill's of Maries County. I've been told that my grandfather's sister, Maggie Griffith, born about 1884, married a William Forrest or Forrester. I have found no proof, so I'm not sure if it is true or not. Do you have any of your Forrester's married to a Maggie Griffith (or may be spelled Griffey) sometime around 1900? I think my Griffiths were living in Pulaski Co. around that time.
