MOMARIES Friends: I got the message below from the NELSON-L list.--Melinda ----------------------------------------- Hi, everybody: For what it is worth, I received the following message (very quickly, by the way) as a reply to a query I placed with the United States Bureau of the Census. Under U.S. law, the Federal decennial censuses are released 72 years after they are taken. ======================== Hello, The 1930 Federal census records will be released to the custody of the National Archives on April 1, 2002, for microfilming. You may want to contact the National Archives about their anticipated availability date of these records to the public. Regards, Carolyn History Staff ======================== After I got this message, I called the Chicago Regional Branch of the National Archives as suggested. I expected from the wording, "released ... for microfilming" that the filming would begin in April 2002, take a certain amount of time, then the rolls would have to be shipped out, etc. Instead, they told me today, 16 July 2001, that the Monday, 1 April 2002 date is the actual date of the release of the census film for public viewing. The archivist in Chicago informed me that the microfilm is *currently* in their possession, and they are doing quality control checking on each roll at this time. I would suggest that other National Archives sites would have the same schedule, this being the government and all, but my direct information is limited to the Chicago branch. Take whatever action you deem appropriate. No breaking and entering, though, and don't blame *me* when you tell your family and friends this far in advance what you'll be doing early next April <grin>. Dora B. Helton was happily settled on her husband's Missouri River farm and expecting her seventh child when her brother-in-law's persistent letters +ACI-got us stirred up about moving to Texas.+ACI- This was 60 years ago. Persuaded that the Texas Panhandle held new opportunities Chan and Dora Helton packed up their belongings and children and took the train to Canadian, Texas. For there they rode by wagon to their new farm in the Zyback Community where Mrs. Helton had her seventh child two weeks later. The story of their prosperous life there is intertwined with development of the community and its eventual split into the two of Allison and Briscoe. The petite pioneer who was born Oct 15, 1877 in Dixon Mo will celebrate her 94th birthday on Friday. Orphaned at 12, the former Dora Riddle went to live on her Uncle George Cain's farm at Dixon, where she later met Thomas Chanley Helton, one of her uncle's hired hands. When they began dating, they went +ACI-to church, to town and to dances - whatever there was doing that was decent to go to+ACI-. She was 18 and he was 21 when they were married in November 1895 at her uncle's home. A year later Mr. Helton cut down timber and fashioned the couple's first home of their own. Mrs. Helton recalled their early furnishings as +ACI-two bedsteads, one dresser, a stand table, a big cookstove and a dish tray. We had an extension (dining) table, and it was a good one, too.+ACI- The couple's farm was near the Gasconade River and Mrs. Helton carried water from a spring to do the washing. When the Helton's arrived May 1, 1911, in Zyback, located 18 miles northeast of Wheeler, the community had about 150 persons. Mr. Helton was raised Hogs, cattle, corn and maize conducted most of his business in Miami and Canadian, including transporting his hogs by wagon the 30 miles to Canadian, Tx. Mr. Helton traded for a half section of land across the road from his brother C.W., and eventually acquired about 6,000 acres spread over Wheeler, Helphill, Ochiltree and Hansford counties and land west of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Mr. Helton's business interest included rent houses and a blacksmith shop. They gave an acre of land to the Zyback school and were members of the Methodist Church. ------=_NextPart_000_0041_01C10EC2.99AED260--

Hi List, I am searching for any information on my Vandegrifft/Vandgrifft family who lived around Belle & Bland from about the mid to late 1940's until about 1990. Thomas (Fred) Vandgrifft b. 5/31/1897 DeValls Bluff, Ar d. 2/14/1956 St. Louis, Mo buried at Liberty Cemetery, Belle Married Velma Lee Woods 4/16/1931 Dewey, Ok b. 2/20/1912 Jay, Ok d. 4/15/1996 Salem, Mo She was a member of the Pentcostal Church in Belle or Bland. She is the only one I know anything about. Laura Ann Vandegrifft b. 6/7/1869 Mo. d. 2/28/1952 at the home of son FRED, Belle buried at Liberty Cemetery, Belle She was a member of the Baptist Church I have recieved death certificates, obit notices from the Belle Banner, & funeral records from Sassmann's in Belle on Thomas Fred & Laura. I'm a little disappointed that there wasn't much information to work with. What is a Fireclay Prospector? How do I go about contacting the Liberty Cemetery for copies of their records? Thank you for any information. Alice
Shirley, How true!!! Without the queries we don't get the new information. I've learned a lot about the Copelands the last few weeks from these queries and I was at a big Copeland-Burns reunion over at Union Mo. a couple of weeks ago. They are all originally from Maries County. DeVere
Thanks DeVere for reminding people about the archives. However, it is still acceptable and in fact encouraged that we post our queries to the list periodically. Otherwise this list is just "dead air." <smile> So Maries County researchers - POST those queries!!!!! Kathy......I have one Copeland in my Ellis line. Martha Copeland was b. in MO (probably Maries County or surrounding area) in Oct. 1853. She married Thomas G. Ellis (b. TN Aug 1851) and am pretty sure they lived in Maries Co. Unfortunately, I have nothing else on her, but thought this might help somehow.
