Judy, You are absolutely right..I had no idea. But for what its worth, I treasure each volume, and I have them all.. For years I have read the emails of very dear folk from all over looking for info on their family. And most everthing they were looking for was in the Maries County Books. I have had my volumes for years and am still finding pictures and family histories related to me. Folks I recommend these books ,they're cheaper than Ancestry.com and have pictures of your family. ----- Original Message ----- From: "W & J Germann" <wgermann@flinthills.com> To: <MOMARIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 19, 2001 11:20 AM Subject: [MOMARIES] Printing books > Thought I would put my two cents worth in about book publishing by the > Society. > > Having worked on the committee to publish all three of the books the Society > put out during the 1990s, I can tell you of at least two main reasons why > the Society doesn't jump on those projects. > > First, the cost of printing has skyrocketed in the last few years. Thought I would put my two cents worth in about book publishing by the Society. Having worked on the committee to publish all three of the books the Society put out during the 1990s, I can tell you of at least two main reasons why the Society doesn't jump on those projects. First, the cost of printing has skyrocketed in the last few years. By the time we printed Volume 3, the basic cost of each book from the printer had nearly tripled from the cost of Volume 1. When the Society ran its recent specials on the books, the Volume 3s were selling at or near cost, meaning no profit to the Society. The Research Room in Vienna has boxes of books which have not been sold. Many of the other projects they have printed have been slow to sell. In addition to the cost of printing, is the problem of where to store the unsold volumes. Secondly, unless you have worked on such a project you have no idea how much time and effort are involved. It is difficult to get volunteers to donate that volume of time. I stepped in to be a co-leader with Kathryn Geisler on volume 3 when Carol Miller had to bow out. I spent a mininum of 6 hours a day, 5-6 days a week for a year getting that ready. Kathryn and the other volunteers spent equal amounts of time. We typed copy for people without typewriters or who were unable to handwrite their stories, visited people to encourage them to submit, researched different aspects of the county history to add those stories to the family stories, went door to door for photos, in addition to working with the printer on the day to day steps that accompany this type of project. Folks, those books are a labor of love by the Society. Having done 3 books in 10 years, I think that the Society felt it had done a great deal to preserve the history of Maries County. We all wish that the time and resources were available to print more, but it just isn't always feasible. I personally would like to see many of the old volumes of Wills, estates, etc put on line, but again, time is the culprit. Judy
Well of course, share it with the Historical Society. That's a given. Still doesn't mean that it can't be put online for the sake of those who only can research online :-( Shirley Scott <>< shirleyscott@juno.com The Scott Family: http://www.geocities.com/shirleyascott My Family Tree: http://www.angelfire.com/mo/winkeler/index.html On Sat, 18 Aug 2001 18:02:35 -0400 "Steven Piper Piper" <BeckyPiper1@worldnet.att.net> writes: > Please send photos and stuff to the MAries County Historical Museum, > maybe > they will put out another book! > Steve ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! You'll need to ask the board of the Historical Society about it. Shirley, I have a question.. Over the years I've been able to worm a little bit of info out of the Visitation Church there in Vienna with a donation or two; But they have so much documented info. why can't the Historical society make a book out of it like the LDS does. Heck they (the Visitation Church and Hist. So., would Bennifit). I saw the following obituary in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch today: "Otto, Alex J., age 93, died Aug 16, 2001, in Knoxville, IA, born in Koeltztown, MO, he lived most of his life in St. Louis. Precede in death by his wife Talida, of 49 years and son, James; he is survived by daughters Jo Ann(Don) McDonagh, Judy (Ken) Schneider, Jacqueline (Peter) Pickard; sister Erma Cooke" Any one interested I can give rest of article. I can't find him anywhere but must be related to Ottos of Maries County somehow. Bob Berg

I don't know of any individual off hand. However, if you have the ability to scan in the photos and send them to me via e-mail, I'd be happy to put them on the Maries Co MOGenweb site. This goes for anyone on the list who has information, old photos, etc. that they would like to share with other researchers. Shirley; While digging through some boxes of old pictures I came across two pictures of the John Grant family. One was taken while the wife Mary was still alive and the children were still young. The second was taken in the early 1900's and the children are all grown. Is anyone interested in a copy of these photos? Maggi, Are you related to any McClures in Wayne Co.,Indiana? I have a 1897 book of cemeteries. "McClure Cem." It has about 12-15 McClures in it. Story goes, that the parents ' rule was that the children should marry in the order they were born. All died single, and the name died with them.
