I need to know who I would contact to find out who's buried where in the Crossroad or Crossroad's Cemetery in northern Madison County, Missouri. We're looking for the grave sites of two infants in our family who died in 1929 & 1930. There are no headstones. We would like to get some headstones made for them, but we first need to know exactly where the graves are at. Therefore, I would appreciate it if anyone knows who I should contact concerning these records. I understand that there used to be a church near the cemetery which probably had the records at one time, but that the church is no longer there. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Historic Madison County sells a couple of little books, both by Henry Clay Thompson, that deal with the early history of Madison County and the importance of the mineral deposits there: "Our lead Belt Heritage" and "A History of Madison County Missouri" Mining started in the early 1700s and at the beginning of the Civil War the Union forces moved quickly to secure the lead mines, a source for ammunition, from Confederate control. Its tough to prove MO residence around 1820. That census has been lost. There are some records of land grants http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/asp/queryMO.asp, but mostly later. That's about the time Missouri became a state, and there was a lot of traffic from the east, including the Carolinas to western KY and then MO from about 1803 or '04 on. It only became the Louisiana territory in 1803, before that immigration was somewhat restricted. There were lead mines in Madison CO a long time before 1803. Not so much iron mining except in the western corner, now Iron County. Lead and associated minerals have been mined for most of recorded history. I had relations in Madison Co MO beginning in 1803 (Whitener) and again about 1834 (Davis Johnson)... I still have relations there. Gerald J.
My grandfather, Richard WALKER and his family moved from Mecklenberg Co, NC (near what is now Charlotte, NC) to Madison Co, MO in 1819 (where they stayed for 4 years). They moved to Jefferson Co, Alabama in 1823 from Missouri. We believe they moved to Madison County to be involved with mining iron ore. Is this possible? I'd like to find proof that they actually lived there. Any suggestions? Could someone please share history of the area at that time? Did many people migrate to Missouri from states to the east during the 1810-1820 time period? Thank you! Grace
Hello, Seeking any assitance I can find to help me locate the correct lineage for a David Stephens born abt 1851. He may have also been known as Daniel. The surname can be found written as Stephens, and later as Stevens. David or Daniel was a minister and farmer. He is believed to have been the father of John Stephens who resided at Williamsville and was married to Angeline Ballew; Mary Stephens who married 1. Vet. Murrell Henderson, and 2. Charley Turner; Alice Stephens who married James Hicks near Kyles, Wayne, MO. and 2.Samuel M Stephens/Stevens. Samuel M Stevens was the son of Warren and Fannie Stephens/Stevens of Madison Co, MO. Please take time to look at your records and see if you can find a connection to the David Stephens family. I'm new to the list and the only connection I have to Madison Co., that I know of, is the Clannin's found in this cemetery. I cannot connect them to any of my ancestors, and that would be unusual since there are very few Clanin, Clannin found in the U. S. and all of them so far are descended from one Clanin. The name had been spelled in many ways, as happens to a lot of names. If someone has any information on them, I would appreciate corresponding with them. Respectifully, James A. I am new to this list & am researching the BENNETT & ANTHONY families who were in Madison Co early 1800's. A Dr. E BENNETT married Jane ANTHONY, daughter of Joseph ANTHONY & Jane FERRIS, & had children in Madison Co--Calvin H BENNETT, Joseph A BENNETT & Jane Elizabeth BENNETT who married Benjamin S MARTIN of Sumner Co TN. Calvin & Joseph both married women named CRUMP in Jackson Co AR in 1840's, they then migrated to Kaufman Co TX where they were both influential & prestigeous merchants. The B S MARTINs went to TX, too, as did some of the ANTHONYs who were siblings & kin to Jane ANTHONY Bennett. Am also seeking info on the ANTHONY family who settled there & were descendants of Rev. Jos ANTHONY who had died in Henry Co VA circa 1807-1808---- Thanks! Kathey in Kaufman TX
I am seeking data about either a David or Daniel Stephens that may have lived in Madison County at one time or another. I have records of a David Stephens moving in and out of Iron Co. I am having a difficult time tracking his family's path...any assistance is appreciated. The David or Daniel I speak of was born abt 1850, suposedly in MO. I have no idea who his father was other than a relative stated she thought his father's name was Lanphard, or either men could have had the nickname Pard at one time. I have the death certificate for David Stephens born about 1850 and died in 1918, he is buried at Mtn. View Cem at Des Arc, MO His father's name has been listed as Lanphard on David's death certificate. The occupation listed for David was minister and farmer. I cannot find any record of a Lanphard... The 1876 Iron Co Census placed a David in Union Twn with wife Delina, son John and daughter Mary. I believe my Great Grandmother Alice D Stephens was the next child born in 1877. There was an article in the 1918 Iron Co Register Newspaper with a write up in the Des Arc Items. It stated Rev. Daniel Stephens of Crane Pond was brought to Des Arc for burial. It also stated he was a servant of God and a precaher in the General Baptist Church. One daughter Mrs. Charley Wright had been at his bedtime at the time of his death. His wife and children were there to mourn him. I know of children John; Mary, who married Murrell or James Murrell Henderson and had daughter Jenny, Mary then married Mr. Charley Wright, he was the father of Owen Wright; and daughter Alice who married James Hicks first, and then Samuel Marion Stephens. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone with any data or suggestions write to me at Vangoz@netscape.net Phyllis Russell-Zeleny ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.

Hello list, I'd like to request a huge favor, if anyone on the list has access to the 1870 Madison County census records. I've been searching all over southern Missouri trying to determine where "my" John A. Bunch family was in 1870. I have run into one dead end after another, but finally had a flash of inspiration that I HOPE!!! has put me on the right track. I know that John's daughter Nancy, married Elisha Peterson, who had land in Polk and Dallas Counties. A search of the GLO Bureau of Land Management database showed that an "Alfred Bunch" had purchased land adjacent to the Peterson's at around the same time in the late 1850's. I wonder if the "A" in John A. Bunch is "Alfred"??? At any rate, there is an Alfred Bunch listed in German township (on page 322 according to the AIS index) and interestingly enough, there is a "Susan Perry" listed on page 323 -- John's daughter Susan married Benjamin Perry in 1868 in Dallas Co., and the 1870 mortality schedule indicates a Benjamin Perry died in Dallas Co. in 1869. It may turn out to be the wrong people, but it sure sounds promising! So, if anyone has access to the 1870 census, I would be most appreciative of a lookup for Alfred Bunch and Susan Perry. Happy holidays to you all!!!
