I would like to ask someone if they would look up a John Webb family who lived in Madison Co, MO in 1860. They had children by that time by the names of Joseph, Jane or Abigail, Daniel and John. Thanks for any info or suggestions. Oh yes, John's wifes name was Rhoda. Again, thanks. Marilyn Orr
I am wondering about Francis Marion Matthews... Geraldine's CW book says p364 says he was son of John Matthews Jr and Nancy Smith which I too, thought was a good possibility. The Francis I was looking for shows up: 1850 Madison Co MO #272 John Boswell 39 TN (prob Overton Co) Thaletha A (Talitha) 20 MO (sister of Francis Matthews) Isaac S 30 MO Helen M 1 MO Francis M Matthews 18 MO Adalia Matthews 20 MO Thomas B Matthews 16 MO 1876 Madison Co State census Francis M Matthews male 0-45 Mary F (0-45) Francis (male) 18-21 Harriet 10-18 Catherine under 10 John under 10 Francis Marion married Mary Case. Is a copy of the 1890 Veterans Census available for Madison county? If so, would it be possible for someone to check for George W. Johnson, Benjamin F. Johnson, and Richard R. Johnson, in the 50 Mo. Inf. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Curt Johnson
I would like to locate the present owner of my great-great grandfathers place south of Thompson Ford. His name was Noble Johnson. He had land in section 15, twsp 33, range 6E. He later deeded the place to his son and son-in-law, George W. Johnson and John Graham. We think his wife Margarett is buried on the old place and would like to find her grave. I have intended to phone Bill and Joan Whitener or John Paul Skaggs as they probably know where the place is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Curt Johnson Bartlesville, OK
In the 1890 City Director for St. Louis, MO Clemens H. Laessig was listed as being a bookkeeper for Goebel & Wetterau, 2611A Madison was given as a 'first' location. In the same directory, Robert Laessig was listed as a carpenter, and his 'second' location given as r.2034 Madison, and his 'second location' as St. Louis. Can anyone tell me what first and second location refer to? Is this Madison Co. MO? Or could it be a street? Can anyone help me find more information on these two people. I believe them to be brothers of my great grandfather Edward Laessig of Chicago, IL and Wisconsin. Here is what the family book (not always accurate, so must consider as leads, not fact): >From THE CAMPBELL'S ARE HERE- Shannon County MO family of Ellis Campbell (1804 VA- 1881 MO) & related names. Written by Mary Ellen Campbell Tesareau. Mary was the grand daughter of Newton Mayberry & Tressia Spitzmiller Mayberry. NOTE: Freeman Campbell (son of James Mehlander "Mel" Campbell; gson of Ellis Campbell) married Lottie Mayberry July 2, 1905) from the book: As for my own personal interest in this book I feel lik my family line is incomplete without a touch of the family tree on my mother's side of my family. Since I never saw my grandfather Campbell, and my grandmother Campbell died when I was a small girl (talking of James M & Sarah Jane Sutton Campbell), I was reared up in the company of my maternal grandparents causing them to seem very close & dear to my heart. Newton Mayberry & Tressia Spitzmiller Mayberry were my mother's parents (Lottie Mayberry Campbell) and I was the first grandchild born to them. Probably another good reason for our closeness. But these two dear old people were so good and kind they wre loved by everyone who knew them. Newton was the son of Robert Mayberry & Jane Henson Mayberry. Tressia was the daughter of Michael (Micah on census) & Louisa Turnbaugh Spitzmiller, both of Iron county, MO. The Mayberry family came from KY, the mother and her family, the father passing away before they came to MO, or could have died on the way. Richard's (authors husband) grandmother who was a Lashley before her marriage told me a sad story of the Mayberry family just after Richard and I were married. Grandmother was born in 1841 and was in her eighties when she told me, but she could remember the Mayberrys coming up through AR to Roselle, MO. They may have stopped and lived in AR awhile on their way from KY, but any way when they traveled as far as Roselle in covered wagons the family had been overcome with the dreadful disease of cholera. A great epidemic was prevalent and people everywhere were so scared of the disease as many deaths were occuring from this disease. They Mayberrys stopped at the schoolhouse in Roselle for a place of abode until the family was able to travel farther. This was a very sad occasion, neighbors in the community wanted to help but knew they could not go into hte house where the sick lay dying. They brought some food and put it where the Mayberrys could get it and they brought food to their teams, but when a death came to the Mayberrys, they had to bvurry their own dead family members to keep from scattering the disease any more than possible. I don't know how many died or how many survived the disease, but this is just another incident on the hardships of our beloved ancestors. Robert's father may have been among these who died. Now, to the Mayberry's that papa can remember. He doesn't remember the mother's name but the boys were Robert, Samuel and James Mayberry, ther girls that pappa (Freeman Campbell) could remember were Mary and Lucinda Mayberry. As stated above, Robert married Jan Henson. Samuel m ____. James married Margaret Ferel. Mary Mayberry maried a Mr Forhan, and Lucinda married Jim Hart. They all had large families. Robert & Jane Henson (m 26 Aug 1861) had: Newton (b 1861), Louise, Nettie, James, Emma, Henry & Clara. Sam had: Tom, Will, Clark, Gordon, Emma, Mary, Margaret & JOsephene. Jim (James Mayberry & Betty Jane Phillips m 25 Apr 1869) had: JOrdon, Louell, Lena, BAscom, Fannie & Della. Mary Fornhams son Charley was the only child I knew of hers. Lucinda's children were Henry (Hank), Ed, Newt, George & Hanna. ... (I confirmed some of the marriage dates (none in book).. and have some others that may give more exact names of women/men... Jakile Hampton Forehand m Casady Mabury 10 Sep 1869 (pg 220 of Iron co marriage book A). Note the misspellings.. this is as written in the book.. many misspellings in this book. Don't let the spelling of a name stop your research. Names were often misspelled back when. I include all spellings when I do lookups for others.. or in doing my own research. Not everyone could read or write back then... I like to think of my Swede grandpa (who could read & write) trying to take down information from an Irishman... Ya, mine nam es Erik Venström, da, I am here to git da nams of jour barnen... Shore man, my name is Ellis Camel Lewis Camel? Yes, shore... Ya, den can chu verify da spellin? Yes, shore... looks gud to me... By the way.. Ellis Campbell could not read nor write.. so would not have known if his info was correct anyhows.. Also, Don't forget boundary changes.. lots of them in the MO area (all over country) back then also. Hello all. I have been off line for a couple of months due to illness and I am wondering if anyone has come up with any information on the Brookes or Chevalier families. I am a descendant of Pierre(Peter) Chevalier and Walter H, Brookes. As far as I can determine the Chevaliers fell off of the face of the earth around 1850. Thank You Jim Brookes St. Ann, Mo.
Dear fellow listers, I just received some new information that our family was not previously aware of. Our surname was not Riddle, but rather Riddel. My great great grandfather was Dr. Merrideth Monrough Riddel who married Ruth Reed in Madison County. This was in 10-23-1856 and they had their first son, John Franklin Riddel on 12/12/1857. He died May 21, 1858. He was buried in either Madison County or Iron County. They lived just outside of Des Arc, which may or may not have been in another county. If anyone know anything of this family, I would sure appreciate the help! Sincerely, Laura Clark
