    1. [MOMADISO-L] Holladay, Tong, & McCreary Families
    2. Teresa Maclin
    3. I'm looking for information on the William Holladay family in Madison County, MO. I would like to know if anyone knows who his parents were. He was born on February 15, 1814 in Tennessee (according to Madison MO 1850 census), and died January 07, 1859 near Fredericktown. He is buried in the Old Fredericktown cemetery with no marker. He married Jane W. Tong on March 03, 1833 in Madison County. She was born April 02, 1815 in Ohio County, Kentucky and died December 05, 1863 near Fredericktown. She is also buried in Fredericktown Cemetery with no marker. Her parents were William Tong and Elizabeth Thomason. Their children were all born in Madison County Missouri: Thomas Holladay - b. March 04, 1834 d. July 31, 1904 in Madison County Missouri (he was a judge and served as State Auditor) Franklin Holladay, Sr. - b. January 26, d. June 01, 1920 in Wayne County Missouri Louisa E. Holladay - b. June 27, d. October 11, 1839 in Madison County Missouri William Jasper Holladay - b. May 19, 1840 d. Unknown (He had a farm outside Fredericktown) George Wesley Holladay - b. August 04, 1842 d. December 09, 1914 Emeline M. Holladay - b. October 11, 1843 d. February 17, 1928 in Wayne County Missouri Washington Holladay - b. October 11, 1845 d. October 03, 1857 Mandia Ann Holladay - b. June 20, 1848 d. July 26, 1852 Hiram N. Holladay - b. May 10, 1850 d. May 20, 1899 in Wayne County Missouri (He was shot to death by his brother-in-law) James M. Holladay - b. February 14, 1852 d. March 18, 1852 Mildred H. Holladay - b. August 27, 1853 d. July 09, 1911 Austain Holladay - b. March 28, 1856 d. November 30, 1857 These dates are from my great grandmother's bible. She was Willa Olla (Tong) Holladay. Her father was Andrew Tong b. August 08, 1838 d. August 10, 1908. Her mother was Rebecca Hasseltine (McCreary) Tong b. February 27, 1842 d. July 10, 1912. Andrew Tong's parents were Theodore Frederick Tong b. June 29, 1787 d. November 04, 1863 and Drucilla Robinson b. May 06, 1793 d. August 21, 1850. Theodore and Jane were half brother and sister. I also would like to know who Rebecca McCreary's parents were. According to oral family history Willa (Tong) Holladay had an aunt that owned a Hotel in Fredericktown in the early 1900's. The aunt had a son or an adopted son named Frank LeSouse or Lesous. Who was a friend or a cousin of a Tinus or Thinious McCreary who was also a relative. Not sure of the spelling of Franks last name or of the first name of the McCreary boy. Willa Olla Tong married Franklin Holladay, Sr. in Wayne County Missouri on December 08, 1896. William Holladay and his son Franklin Holladay were in the freight business. They hauled lead from Mine La Monte to St. Genevieve to be loaded on boats there. William also farmed. William and Franklin went to California in 1849 or 1850 and William came back after about two years. Franklin Holladay stayed until the late 1880's or early 1890's. Any information on these families would be greatly appreciated.

    3. Hi All! Trying to make a connection with this William Tucker. Need parent/sibling info. Any help is appreciated! According to the 1860 census, William Tucker was born ca. 1834 in TN (near Nashville, I think). He died on 23 Jan 1887 and is buried in Howard Cemetery (3 mi NW of Jackson off Hwy. 72). His tombstone gives a birthdate of 8 Apr 1836. Malinda McGuire was born 28 Feb 1839 in Jackson, MO, and died 4 Sep 1933 in Jackson. She is buried in Russell Heights Cemetery next to her brother, Milton McGuire. I think she and William Tucker were separated/divorced. Her parents were William McGuire and Sarah Louisa Howard. William Tucker and Malinda McGuire had the following children: John Marshall Tucker, b. 11 Sep 1859 in Cape Co., MO, md. Eliza Peterman, d. 28 Apr 1943. Mary Hester Tucker, b. 12 Nov 1862, md. Wm. Cooper Cracraft, d. 17 Aug 1933. Martha Eliz. Tucker, b. 30 Apr 1865, md. Joseph Halley, d. 9 Mar 1953. Emma Jane Tucker, b. 30 Apr 1865, md. Geo. W. Tallent, Jr., d. 14 Oct 1946. I have connected with another researcher who provided me with this info. I have quite a bit on Tucker lines, but nothing to connect William. Again, any info is greatly appreciated! Erica

    2. Angela, I have two John Shults in my database, but neither appears to be yours. My first John Shults was possible born 01 Jan 1830 in Cape Girardeau County and died 10 Mar 1920 in Madison County. His parents were George Shults and Sarah Hudson (Hutson). He had (at least) two wives, Rebecca J. <unknown> and Mary Jane Mounce. George came to Madison County around 1836. The second John was a brother to George Shults. His parents were Marcus and Christenia Shults. He was apparently dead when his father's will was probated in December 1836 in Cape Girardeau County. Happy Hunting! 1. Re: [MOMADISO-L] Madison/Bollinger County--Christian County KY
    2. Dr. Gerald N. Johnson, electrical engineer
    3. I figure that salesman for SEMO already lived in SEMO and wrote glowing letters to his friends and relations in the east. There's a land grant in SEMO, apparently along the Sikeston Ridge for a David Johnson in early 1812 that isn't on any plats. I'm beginning to think that he never finished the paper work after the earthquakes began and headed north until he found more stable land in the granite based mountains away from the alluvial plain. But the records I've found so far aren't specific enough to know it was my David. I suspect that SEMO may have been the goal all along, and the pause in CC KY was to rest up, grow some grain for the stock, and to wait for Missouri to be more open and for the indians to move on. Maybe it was simply a wait for better roads. The CC KY area was populated a bit earlier than SEMO and possibly the best living spots were already taken (hills for summer, hollows for winter). I have a book that reports folks living in the hollows and valleys of western Kentucky long about 1805 were plagued with malaria carried by mosquitos and those that could moved to the hill tops to be away from the thickest of the mosquito population. There's a land grant in 1837 in Stoddard County south of the escarpment for Alfred Henson. That's the year my gggp Alfred Gain Henson was married. That land grant was sold in 1839, and Alfred Gain Henson was found in different KY counties until he moved to Union Light near Patton in 1853. I don't know if its the same Alfred Henson because he didn't use a middle initial in the land grant and the sale (because his son Alfred Boyd Henson hadn't been born or named yet, maybe). I suspect the mosquitoes ate too well and the family headed for Kentucky hills to escape them. The land at Union Light is high ground flat woods. Not the crop land the alluvial plain is today, but more livable. I've been sent what looks like an excerpt from a history book that says Alfred Gain Henson first moved to Missouri as a young man (of 30+?) in 1853. I've not found the source of the excerpt. It truly is difficult finding where the CC KY and SEMO folks migrated from. Especially when the patriarch was named David Johnson. There were about 18 David Johnsons in the two Carolina 1790 census. Several with the right number of offspring. I can't be sure which Carolina because the offspring that were alive in 1850 and 1860 were not consistent about where they were born, not even the same person in the two census. I've eliminated one David, because he stayed in SC and became governor about 1840, long after my David died. There's another I'd like to eliminate. He confessed to adultery in a Baptist Church and was excommunicated. The best markers for my Johnson family migration has been Baptist church activities, as members and as messengers to the various Baptist Association meetings between 1816 and 1863. That's not what I think of the activities of a man thrown out of church fellowship for being honest. He was admitted to the Bethel Church at Jackson by a letter from his previous church. I wish I could find that letter or a comment on which church it came from. There was only possible church that old in Christian County and I hope to dig into their records sometime. Their meeting minutes likely will show at least the month of joining that church and the month of leaving. Those will be closer than any civil records of the era (e.g. census) and could only be improved on by a family diary or a long sequence of letters to the folks left back east. I saw a book of such letters from a German immigrant in the ISU library this evening. She settled in the Jefferson City area and so I didn't bring it home. Several of my Johnsons served in war of 1812 Missouri Militia companies, mostly Capt Tinnan's Mounted Militia out of Cape Girardeau County. Their names are in the rosters. The vast majority of war of 1812 history books totally ignore Missouri unless troops went east and joined in KY or TN. Just like most of the Civil War history books ignore Missouri though there were more battles in Missouri than any state to the east except Virginia and Tennessee. I believe that the folks traveled west in groups of neighbors. That long walk (for all but the babies and really old) left the youngsters a lot of time to become acquainted. Gerald J.

    1. [MOMADISO-L] Madison/Bollinger County--Christian County KY
    2. David James Revelle
    3. Well, chalk another family up to Christain County, Kentucky! There must have been SOME salesman for SEMO visiting Christian County between 1812 and 1815! "The best we've traced so far, the family lived pretty much together and was in Christian County KY from at least 1808 through the 1810 census. Several members of the family (David and wife, Davis and wife, William and wife) joined the Bethel Baptist Church at Jackson MO in 1812. David had land near Cane Creek in what is now Bollinger Co MO." The Revelle family also migrated from Christian County to Cape Girardeau County, into the part that later became Bollinger County. Goodspeed's says that the earliest migration was 1812, though that date is not substantiated by evidence. A more conservative est. of 1815 fits better. The Revelles were in Christian County from the late 1790s on, and completely dissapeared from there in about 1815. Another Revelle married Robert Chase between 1800 and 1805 in Ste. Genevieve County, and they migrated to Madison County on his Revolutionary War grant. It is unclear how exactly these two Revelle families relate, except that they later intermarry. Does anybody else trace a family's migration from Christian County, KY into Bollinger or Madison Counties? I have had a hard time establishing where the Revelles were prior to moving to KY, and would be interested in the migration routes of other families who came to MO the same way... Best regards! 2. Dr. Gerald N. Johnson, electrical engineer
    3. 1 David was married to Margaret ?. He died in what is now Bollinger Co MO in 1823. 2. Davis Johnson was born in 1786. Married Betsy/Elizabeth Cato in Christian Co KY in 1808 or 1809. 3. Joseph D. Johnson married Maria Louisa Johnson, his first cousin, daughter of my gggp Noble Johnson. She was known as Maria Louisa Moss having first married Joseph L Moss. The Moss family lived in Randolph Co Ill for a time. The list of 2s should include: 2 Noble Johnson b 1796 in a Carolina, married Margarette Pinkerton b. 1806 in 1829. In the 1839 census there were 5 or 6 children, clearly not all from Margarette. The implication is that there was a first wife, but no descendents have proven that yet. 2 Jonathan Johnson married Mary (I have that in a pile here). Both died at Jackson Mo in 1830. 2 Ransom Johnson lived a while in Arkansas but his estate was probated in Madison Co Mo. He had a daughter Maria L. Johnson and a son Edward A Johnson that were in the Noble Johnson household at times. At least Maria Louisa was officially cared for and Edward A was married in Noble's house (in Perry County). 2 William Johnson married Jane McGehee in Christian Co KY about 1808. He died before 1828. 2 Sarah Johnson, married a Spivey. 2 Willey Emmy Johnson married John Baker, probably in Kentucky. Died before her father. His estate papers give her share of the estate to her children. Search for her descendents information on Alvy Ray Smith's web page http://www.alvyray.com I have more of the David Johnson family history on my web page and will be posting more as I get it more organized. http://www.tebra.net/~geraldj/ The best we've traced so far, the family lived pretty much together and was in Christian County KY from at least 1808 through the 1810 census. Several members of the family (David and wife, Davis and wife, William and wife) joined the Bethel Baptist Church at Jackson MO in 1812. David had land near Cane Creek in what is now Bollinger Co MO. Noble and other family members paid taxes in Cape Girardeau County (which included the Bollinger Co location) up to 1823. Noble paid taxes but had no land in Perry County in 1828 through 1845. He bought land in Madison Co MO in 1847 and was elected JP in Madison Co in 1849. He died in 1873, the last mention of Margarette we've found was the 1860 census. Judging by the neighbors in the Perry Co census, Noble lived a different place in 1840 than in 1830 when I believe he lived in the Longtown area. I'm still sorting that out. Noble was reported as being a blacksmith in the 1840 through 1860 census. At least one person has claimed that his shop was at the southeast corner of the intersections of HWY E and K in Madison County. Land that he owned was over the ridge in Spanish survey 847. 3. Who are the parents of the Johnsons in your list of Frizzel? I believe Uriah is probably son of Davis Johnson, brother of my gggp Noble Johnson. Davis married Betsy Cato in Christian Co KY about 1808. We don't yet know all the names of Noble's sons. Gerald J.

    3. http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/search.asp?s=16 shows only land sales by the government to individuals. It doens't show subsequent sales. Gerald J.

    3. Have any of you used the US Glorecords site? It shows many land purchases, and you can search by county and surname. Click on the following; http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/search.asp?s=16 Sandy McSpadden.

    3. I noticed there was a map of Madison County Spanish surveys in one of the Thompson histories printed by the newspaper at Fredericktown. Its reprinted and available from the Madison County Historical Society and at the Regional Library on West Main Street. There is a book somewhere that I've had on Spanish land surveys, that has a chapter or two on those in Missouri. Its been a least a couple years since I last had it in my hands so I don't remember the details. Most any topographic map prior to the present one and most any vintage plat book or plat map shows the surveys as distorted sections or parts of sections. Gerald J.
