I just went to www.google.com and put in "iron mountain railroad 1870 Missouri" as my search string. Had 1880 hits. Some were about a road in Michigan. Beginning with a brief history of the STLIM&S at: http://www.geocities.com/~mopac/stlim_1.htm http://www.cyndislist.com/railroad.htm is probably a very complete set of links for railroads. I'd expect some decent history in the Mercantile Library in St. Louis, now housed at U of MO at St. Louis. Gerald J.
Could anyone on the list direct me to a source of information on the Iron Mt. RR as it would pertain to Madison Co.? My great grandfather (Michael Coffey) was a contractor for the RR and lived for a time in Frederickstown (late 1860's). One of his children, Ann, was born in the area. Thanks. Jim near Chicago
For some reason Missouri along with other border states have not been put into the system but the records have been cataloged for input. I guess it will be a matter of time.
This is a very rewarding web site for those looking for Civil War Veterans. You can enter only a surname and you will get a list of names if you are not certain of a first name. You can read about the activity reported for your ancestors regiment as well. I just wanted to share the site. If the following hyper link does not work, try: http://www.itd.nps/gov/cwss/soldiers.htm<A HREF="http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm"> Click here: Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System</A> Sincerely, Cindy Englehart
Doesn't admit there were Missouri units! Gerald J.

In a message dated 7/23/01 2:45:50 PM Central Daylight Time, darose@yosemite.net writes: > http://www.diocspfdcape.org/parishes/stmichael.html Catholic Churches in Madison County. The main parish was at St. Michael's Church located in , on present day West Main St. HOWEVER, at one time in the 1800's til about 1900 (ca....) there was also a parish annex known as St. Elizabeths, and was located in Mine la Motte. This chapel was used by the mining families who were Catholic. This chapel fell into disuse about 1900. The nuns who operated the chapel and whatever charitable operations., were according to the parishoners downright mean, and almost beat a schoolgirl to death. So after several complaints the church closed the chapel, down and St Elizabeths became a residence for families, and my great great aunt who is 98 was born there in Feb 1903. This is theONLY other catholic church that I have ever heard about in Madison County. Some of the accompanying material came from the notes of Dr Wm Harrison (Harry) Barron who was born and raised in Mine La Motte. Thanks Michael Miller
An appropriate name for the town of St. Michaels. Gerald J.

Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri says Chris Weigenstein was Judge of Probate court from 1879 to 1883. Goodspeed says Father Tucker was in charge of the Parish at Fredericktown until December 1880, but doesn't name the church. There is a book about Roman Catholics west of Maryland that has quite a bit of information about Madison and Perry County MO catholics. There is a series of marriage books that date back nearly to the beginning of Madison County that should mention your marriage. The early ones are on microfilm at the regional library on west Main. There might be mention of these families in Historical Madison County. I don't have a copy to check. Gerald J.
http://www.CyndisList.com/mo.htm has current county list addresses. There might still be two Madison County pages, on Rootsweb, one Genforum or they may have been combined or destroyed. I've not checked lately. Gerald J.
Would like to know what catholic churches existed in Madison Co, (possibly Polk Twp) in 1880 and where I would write to find a marriage that took place in May 1880 of a Rosar and Weigenstein Lenora from Wisconsin
Searching for descendants and ancestors of these folks. The Parks sisters' names are: Alice, Arteissma Jennie , and Florence. (ca 1860-1900). Mother's name was Amanda (Mandy) Parks. Looking for Richard Taylor Sanders' ancesters, Fred Fields and son Aubry (ca 1870-1910), Alice Parks married Samuel Wray. Thanks for sending a note if you know anything about these people. Barbara Wray NW Oregon
I am researching the Rosar nd Wiegenstein families of Polk Twp. Madison Co., MO. I found both famlies in the 1900 census but would like to find descendants of both famlies. Also is there a web site for Madison Co. research or genealogy site? Lenora from Wisconsin
Attn: John Bennett Are you from Fredericktown? Possibly Sandy Bennett's son? Regards, Curt Johnson
I remember a few months ago seeing a message come thru the site in which the person said he or she had some of the original records of Madison County. I have a possible fourth GGFather who may be the father of Joseph, Elisha and John Bennett and others I'm sure. His name was George Bennett and the index to the County court records indicated a probate was held for him I believe it was June 1823. The record has an entry in it that states the county Judge ordered the Clerk of the Court to remove and copy the probate recorts seperate from the other Court records. It seems in this process George's records were lost as they are no longer in the County Court Records except for the entry in the index nor the index or record of the probates. I desire to locate the person with the original records to see if possibly this probate is still listed in it. In other words--hheellpp--.. I'ts not easy being so close but no way to get a hold of the information. So I'll set here patiently awaiting a reply. This was probably the George born to Thomas Bennett Jr of Westmoreland County Virginia in 1752.
Linda I received your email to MOMADISO in Anchorage nearly 2 months ago and had no way to answer. Now I am home in WA and here is what I have. Nancy Malinda Austin Hurt was my ggrandmother and mother of my grandmother Carrie Octavia Underwood wife of George William Henderson. After the death of Thomas Jefferson Underwood she married Ike Clannon and is buried, unmarked, in the Mine la Motte cemetery in Madison County MO. There are records that indicate she and Thomas were fined $75.00 for getting married before she was divorced from Henry Hurt and rumors that she may have had a daughter by him. I have no information on her family but I intend to research her when I return to MO for a visit in Sept. I do have a picture of Thomas and Nancy. Hope this helps. Ted
