http://mosl.sos.state.mo.us/rec-man/archives/resources/bdrecords/records.html has some interesting records for many Missouri counties. http://www.skpub.com/genie/census/mo/madison.html shows the current township map. http://198.209.8.166/sheproom/moser/madisonpl.html is a bit interesting. Modern Missouri map resource: http://www.dnr.state.mo.us/dgls/adm/publications/maps.htm An interesting list of references about Missouri, unfortunately not loaned last I checked and not in Clayton MO. The Clayton Library is in Houston TX. A couple interesting entries for Madison Count in this index to the MOSGA Journal. Now all I need to do is to find the journal. http://www.mosga.org/journalindex.html Gerald J. -- Entire content copyright Dr. Gerald N. Johnson. Reproduction by permission only.
A thousand pardons . . . I see the link to the Bureau of the census files doesn't work OR is difficult to make work (it's an FTP link). I dutifully pasted in the link that shows when I'm looking at the map with MY browser but to get to the map directly is, apparently, a little more difficult that that. First see if this link works; http://ftp2.census.gov/plmap/pl_trt/st29_Missouri/c29123_Madison/ If not, follow the more indirect route below to get to the file. If you had trouble accessing the BOC directory and the large assortment of various types of maps, try first opening the http://ftp2.census.gov home page This should bring up a directory index with several file folders. Open next the folder labeled plmap. Then the pl_trt/ folder. Choose from the list of states and territories, st29_Missouri/ That should bring up the list of counties. Choose c29123_Madison which will bring up the file entitled CT29123_001.pdf This is the Acrobat file you need . . . of course, it will require you're having Acrobat reader on your computer to do so. I have downloaded the file so I can send it to anyone who has a problem in accessing it. However, if TOO many folks hit a snag I may have to back down on my offer due to time considerations. Should that happen, I'll probably post the file elsewhere. Similarly, if you had trouble getting to the "map products" on the main index page for the BOC, open the main index page; http://www.census.gov/ and select Maps under the Geography heading. Then click on "map products". From the map products page select "Census Tract Outline Maps. From there the trail is the same as above; select st29_Missouri/ and proceed as above. Hope all that instruction helps more than it discourages and you find the current township map (and the other maps that are available in this general index) useful. You will probably need to look at the way counties and township names have changed throughout the years to make the information useful in the 1800's and etc. I see the post by Dr. Gerald Johnson contained some helpful suggestions to that end. Ken Hinkle.
Lloyd (and others), It wasn't easy but I did find a township map. It's a current (2000) one so that's not ideal for Genealogical purposes. It may be of some use but we know some of the townships have changed over the years. Here's the site; http://ftp2.census.gov/plmap/pl_trt/st29_Missouri/c29123_Madison/CT29123_000.pdf As you can see, it's a pdf file but that's no problem if you have a fairly recent copy of Acrobat reader (it's a free download, if you don't already have one on your computer). The index page for these "block maps" is part of The U.S. Bureau of the Census site and is; http://www.census.gov/geo/www/maps/CP_MapProducts Ken Hinkle
I've found books of them in libraries, and also in the national census summaries that came out a few years after the census year. Otherwise the townships have tended to be a little mobile and to have changed names on occasion. For example, German Township in Madison County, which was generally from Marquand to Buckhorn, east of 12 mile township, split into Marquand and German and then German was renamed, I recall to Big Creek. Don't have my maps in front of me. For that matter the county boundaries changed a few times too. I did find those on line http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lpproots/monmaps.htm A google search on "census maps" Missouri turned up 23,000 hits so there might be the maps on line, but I didn't come to them right away. Is there a site where you can download a map of Madison County showing the township? LLOYD
I am trying to pin down the Henderson family that my great-great-grandmother belongs to. Sarah Henderson, reportedly born 1812 in South Carolina, was married to Spencer Sharp, and living in Madison County with one small child in 1830 census. They were listed in a separate household next to his father, Anthony Sharp, and his brother, Robert Looney Sharp. Robert Looney Sharp also had married -- Isabel Henderson. Their marriage is listed in the early records of Madison County, but no mention of who her parents are. Meanwhile, anot her Sharp sibling, Esther, married Robert Henderson, again no information. I did have a list of Adam's children and did not find these names among them. According to tradition of naming patterns, Sarah's father would have been named Nathaniel. Their first son was named Nathaniel Henderson Sharp. Robert L and Isabel named one son William Hughitt, a name not otherwise found among the Sharps. Do you have a missing Sarah, Isabel or Robert? love joan For this is the day that the Lord hath made Join me in rejoicing in it, and let us be glad!
I have reached a point in my research that has me very confused. I have tried to find out where my gggrandmother Elizabeth McCLard Henderson, her son Daniel and his wife Mary Jane Peterman disappeared to in the 1850s. I have not been able to find either. What has me confused is that there are 2 Elizabeth Hendersons in Madison Co. during the period 1810 to 1853. My ggrandfather was the son of Elizabeth and older brother of Daniel. My ggggrandfather James Henderson came to Madison Co.,MO by 1821 with his brother Adams. James had a son Wilson, b. 1812 TN who married Elizabeth McClard b. 1810 VA on 25 Nov 1830 in Madison CO. After Wilson died in in 1831 some genealogyists indicate Elizabeth married Anthony Lance in 1851 and divorced him in 1853. Adams Henderson had daughter also named Elizabeth also born in 1810. A book of Madison county families lists, under the section on the Graham family, that Adams' Daughter Elizabeth was the one who married Anthony Lance. So 2 Elizabeth Hendersons are credited with marying Anthony Lance Can anyone help me with this puzzle and my lost ancestors. Ted
Hello List! I am sending this even though it does not pertain to genealogy, I feel strongly enough that we need to support those protecting our rights as we know them. I received this in another one of my lists and thought it was wonderful they shared. Help them get through the holidays without their families. Please pass the word! Happy Holidays to your house from ours! Cindy The Department of Defense announced today an alternative to the "Any Servicemember" and "Operation Dear Abby" programs, which were suspended indefinitely in the wake of anthrax mail attacks. The Navy has developed a Web-based alternative to benefit members of all Services. The program can be reached at the Navy LIFELines Services Network at http://www.lifelines2000.org ... Those who want to send a message of support or holiday greeting to military servicemembers will find a simple process for delivering messages at these sites. The "Any Servicemember" program allows participants to select from one or all branches of the military. To receive a message of support, servicemembers will log onto the Web site and choose messages for their branch of Service and home state. Those sending a message who wish to receive a response may include a return e-mail address. Since all messages are viewed on the Web, the military's regular e-mail service is not affected.

I believe death records are not public record in Missouri. But if you're a relative you might be able to send for them to Jefferson City. If others have a better idea or a way around the above, I;d love to hear it too. John
Hi again Can anyone tell me what the cost is for a death certificate for a person who died in Madison Co., MO? He died Dec. 18, 1924 and the name is John G. Rosar. If anyone is going to the courthouse in Fredricktown I would appreciate a lookup for this death. I live in Wisconsin and could help anyone there Lenora from Wisconsin
I am trying to find more information on my great great Grandmother, Amanda Josephine Martin. She was born Amanda Josephine Ray in Hamilton County, IL 1850. She had three children by my gggrandfather Charles J Upton, Laura Jane, William A and Charles N. I have not been able to find anything on Charles J Upton. I was able to find out that Amanda married Matthew Milton Martin in 1876 Perry county, IL and then about 1890 they moved to Wayne County Missouri. Matthew died there in 1893. Amanda was listed as Mrs. M M Martin on the 1910 Wayne County Census. There were a number of Martin children, Bird, Abasolom, Nettie, Alva and Louis. I have not been able to find any further information on her other than her census listing and would appreciate any information. I look forward to any responses! Thanks in advance for your help.
