    1. [MOMADISO-L] research
    2. As I said I just got back form Fredericktown and was a little disappointed. The land records at the courthouse were fine and also found some probates there. There are alos marriage records, but no death records. The library oopens at 11:00 and it did have some things such as cemetery information I can't believe there weren't more obits -I have a Christopher Wiegenstein who died in 1907 and was a judge and I would have thought he would have had an obit. The town is typical small town with a square which I always enjoy. Not many restaurants and we found only 1 motel the Econo lodge (I was glad to find it) althought on Hwy 67 there was a Super 8 further north. It is very pretty country with the hills, etc. I would think in spring it must be very beautiful. Good luck and if you find anything interesting let me know Lenora from WIS

    3. There are a few genealogy books you probably won't find anywhere else but the library in Fredericktown. They also have the courthouse deeds and probate records for before 1900 on microfilm. Prints from the microfilms in the library are a quarter a page, and in the courthouse a buck or two a deed and the staff is not nice to the books. There are the same microfilms at the State Archives. Some of the deed indexes are wrong, some of the microfilms failed to get the last line or two of a page which if that is where the deed was indexed its a real pain to not find it on the microfilm. Been there, done that. I find it handier to figure out what book they really meant by having the books at hand than to try to search through microfilms when the index is wrong. I take a camera and photograph the deeds, one half page of the ledger book to the 35 mm frame. Its faster than copying and easier on the books. The probate records have been organized by surname initial which makes them easier to search than sequentially sometimes. The collections at the State Historical Society libraries are all different. Each library has some staples but many unique entries, so you need to look at Columbia, St. Louis, and Rolla. Fortunately their indices are on the internet. Also the Western Historical Manuscript collections are different but indexes are on the internet. There is an undated early plat book for Madison County in the courthouse vault that can be interesting. I've photographed a couple of its pages, mainly the Creek Nation and Buckhorn areas. I don't know of any copies. The library in Fredericktown opens fairly late in the morning, so its convenient to start in the courthouse and then go to the library. The Madison County Historical Society has a few books for sale on the day when they are open. Gerald J. -- Entire content copyright Dr. Gerald N. Johnson. Reproduction by permission only.

    2. I just returned from Fredericktown, Madison, Co., Mo on a research trip and was very disappointed that there were not death records there. Also looking for early land records (1820-1835) that I would assume are at the courthouse. 2. Hello fellow listers: I am putting on a presentation to some of the local DAR members next week on Researching on the Internet. While attending a workshop recently I found out that many of the members don't know about Cyndislist and some of the other site. They only know about FamilySearch.or and Ancestry.com. Please share with me your favorite sites for obtaining information. I am not trying to re-create Cyndis List, just prepare a simple handout to get them started. (Also, this might help other members of this list.) Many thanks. Conni Braun Chasing elusive Mitchell, Baldus, McFarland, Donley and Grefrath ancestors!

    3. Deed research is easy in the courthouse, the vault is through the Clerk of Courts office. There's no assistance. The index books are fairly good, though sometimes indicate the wrong class of deed, hence the wrong deed book, and I've found errors which the clerks haven't been interested in correcting. Deeds are on microfilm in the library a block west of the courthouse up to about 1900. There are other decent references on the genealogy shelves in the library. The library isn't open early mornings. There is a 1900 plat map framed on the wall in one of the offices, and an about 1850 (not dated) plat book in the deeds vault in the courthouse. They will copy deeds for a buck a deed, but they aren't gentle to the books. Copies from microfilm are a quarter a page at the library and help preserve the original books a bit longer. Probate records from the 19th century are on microfilm in the library, organized by last name. I've not tried to chase probate records in the courthouse. The historical society home is about a block north of the courthouse in what used to be the county jail. Open on Tuesdays, if I recall correctly. Meets one evening a month. Weather at the end of February can vary wildly, though its likely averaging in the 40s and 50s, but can vary from a foot of snow to 70. And make that change in a day. I've found parking to be most convenient in the city hall lot a block west of the courthouse. Gerald J. -- Entire content copyright Dr. Gerald N. Johnson. Reproduction by permission only.

    1. [MOMADISO-L] Harmon and Rhodes Surnames
    2. Michele LeMasney
    3. I am working on my family tree information and have hit a road block and am hoping to locate someone who might know something. Any information is greatly appreciated. I am searching for the Rhodes family and Harmon family as well. I know that my Great Grandmother was born there in Madison, County. Her name was Sarah Elmine Rhodes. She was born on March 26, 1894. I have some information that says that her mother's name may have been America Jane...but no last name. I know that she was american indian and had a somewhat darker complection. I am also trying to locate any information on the surname Harmon. It may have been spelled differently then also. In particular, I am searching for information on a Quincy Fate Harmon, born July 6, 1872 in madison County and died in Clarkton Mo, on Feb. 15, 1954. I have seen some information that says that his name may have been spelled Quientlee as opposed to Quincy. Thank you for your time. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp.
