    3. Ancestry has a freebie for the immigration collection until the end of the month. You might want to have a look and see if you can find them on a ships manifest. If they came in through the Great Lakes, it will be difficult to find them. Most of those records are missing in action. Blessings! 3. If I might add, this might help as well. Most of the Germans until late in the 19th century did not go by their first names. These were generally honorifics - a saint's name. That is why so many children in the same family might have the same first given name. They generally went by their second or third name and these usually followed some very specific formulas. There is an excellent site about this at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~hornbeck/naming.htm Blessings! Susan > > "I have seen some of these. 3. My sister's husband is of German descent and she has ordered many genealogical documents from there. She has also corresponded directly with some of his German counterparts. She had this to add to the old German names as they relate to the Anglicized names after immigrating to the States: "I have seen some of these. Also, some of the men's names especially were found in late 1600's, early 1700s as their official names and not nicknames. Very early our John was Hans. Later usually Johannes and still later was Johann. Sometimes brothers would be Johannes and Johann in same time periods. Johannes was popular in Switzerland. Rarely found Hans after very early 1700s in SW Germany. Some of the girls nicknames were the same in English. In Germany, girl's maiden name changed endings a lot. Kind of endearing term. Lots of times ended in "en" etc. Anna Klee was also Klerin and other endings I have seen. Also, in very early records, I have seen Nicholas shown as Nickel many times, but not much later."

    3. Hi Carey, I believe that Jacob bought this land between 1880 and 1888 but do not have the land record. He died 21 Mar 1888 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery with his wife Barbara Steinert Stoner. Barbara is listed in the 1900 census for Highland township. When I visited the graves of Fred and Clara in Gilead Cemetery I spoke with the current owner of this private cemetery. I believe his name was William ? Wallace and he told me he knew of a old man Drescher that lived just over the hill. I think this was John Daniel Drescher who died in 1945 and he also told me there had been a church which could have been the Baptist and school there at one time. And another cemetery near a creek that was just a pile of stones now and I think that is where William Hetzler may have been buried as there is no record of his burial. Both my Fred and Clara Drescher are buried there and I believe her Mother and brother Mary and William Hetzler just behind Fred and Clara's grave. I have an obituary for both Clara and Fred who died in the hospital in Quincy leaving my Grandmother an orphan at nine years old. She lived with Mae orginal Hetzler who was a half sister to Clara from the first marriage of Mary Hetzler and moved to Wilton Iowa. The obit for Fred follows. February 10, 1913 FRED T Drescher DIES AT HOSPITAL Former Missouri Farmer Succumbs to Typhoid Fever Early This Morning Fred T. Drescher of 333 South Fourth Street, died this morning at 6 o'clock at St. Mary's hospital of typhoid fever. Mr. Drescher was a farmer, but at the death of his wife, which occurred just eight months ago today, he came to Quincy and had worked here since, boarding at the above address. He was a member of the First Baptist church. He was born April 28, 1866, and was therefore aged 46 years, 9 months and 21 days. He is survived by a young daughter, Irene, who is with relatives of her mother at Wilton Junction, IA. He also leaves his aged mother of La Grange, one sister Mrs. Lahr at La Grange and nine brothers, Henry of Maywood Mo.; Charles, John and August, at Ewing, Mo.; William of Quincy, Ed and Frank of South Dakota, George of Peetz, Col., and Clarence of Chicago. The remains were removed to Mumper's undertaking establishment to be prepared for burial and will be taken to Ewing and from there to Gilead, Mo., for burial Wednesday, Gilead being the original home of the family. I also know from census records that some of my Jones family worked as farmers for the lillard's. I don't have that handy right now. And by the way Mary Hetzler married James Jones after her husband William died. I think they later divorce leaving one child only my Clara. Thank you for this information. 3. All of these places and names sound very familiar. My gr.grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Kaiser Lillard, one of three daughters of William and Willamena Welch Kaiser, German immigrants who are buried at Talona. Mary married Wm. Lee Lillard, and they are buried at Mt. Olivet southwest of Ewing (the farm I mentioned isn't far from there as I recall.) The older Lillards are buried at Dover, I recall. My mother's maiden name was Green, they also from Lewis Co., but I've had difficulty locating their burial places, etc. The Fred and Clara names rang a bell, too, but I'm sure I'm thinking of Mary's sisters and nieces, one named Clara and another who married a Fred Hackett. Mary's sister Clara married a Heubotter.

    3. Thanks --Susie http://www.usgennet.org/usa/il/state2/index.htm Go there for some Adams County tombstone photos and such. I've been putting this online now for almost a year. not all of them are online but you might find someone if you don't already have them. YOu have to go the Il County page and then to Adams county, IL. for the tombstone photos. here is my 2nd great grandmother's obituary I finally found in a Galesburg Paper. Mrs. Harry Terpening died at her home in Missouri April 08, 1886 of consumption nee's Armstrong, Lyna, as her friends called her. United with the M. E. Church at Tylerville when quite young. She leaves 8 children. Her death had been expected for some time. Utah, April 24, 1886. Galesburg Republican-Register. At the time of her death she was living on a farm near Ewing, MO. The whole family was. They buried her there. it wasn't until later My 2nd great-grandfather Harrison Peck Terpening came back to Utah, Ill, which was never classified as a town or anything but she was buried down there. My great-grandfather John Thomas Terpening has on his death certificate he was born in another county in MO and Harrison's mother Mindwell Smith Terpening had brothers who went to MO. so that could be true but I've never found Martha Nicolina' burial place. I just happened to stumble onto the obituary in a book at the library here in IL in Galesburg, IL. Actually I've never posted to this before either. I've always received things and had been waiting and I check it periodically the Lewis Co, MO web site to see if there is any info and I can never find anything on my family that went MO. and when I saw the post of the new web site being updated I thought maybe just maybe I might get a glimmer. Those Terpening's you mention below are out of my family. Is there a cemetery near this Ewing, MO? Is Canton, MO, near Ewing, MO. I have no idea where either place is? I live in IL and have been through MO going to see my brother in KS but never stopped guess next time I'm going to have to take a different route. The only Terpening listed in the cemetery book by the LCHS in Canton are Elasie M (Bonddurant) 1877 1954---Earl's wife Earl S. ss 1875 1952------is the son of John Wesley Terpening brother to my Harrison Peck Terpening. John W. 05-09-1903 10-28-1970 son of Earl & Elasie Terpening. Isn't his wife Ruth Ball and then his second wife Pauline buried here? She died a couple of years ago. I got a letter from a friend of hers that was in a nursing home down there? I never did know where these guys were buried either. Now I do. Thanks so much.... Highland Township Masonic and Lutheran Cemetery Page 203 My Smith's are Mindwell Smith Terpening's brothers and those I would have to look up and see but think they went to Petis County, MO. another of John Peck Terpening's brother's ended up in MO. His name was Samuel and he was in Petis Co., I think not sure but think he was both of his daughters from his second marriage married some Twigg guy. Have some information on them. Thanks for the address and I think I just might right to them and see if they can help. I'm trying to do some of my own family information for a change.
