Author: VEWenneker Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.lewis/468.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Garyl: Heard the bad new's about the flooding...starting yesterday. So sorry, friend. Your ground is up on the highlands, isn't it? How many weeks have you been having rain there? Is the discharge "cross country" or is there more to go before the ground goes thoroughly soaked. And how do you think your crops will be for harvest? I was back there a few weeks of the 1,000 year 1993 flood. To this day it was the most awesome, most impressive, and most of all, the very saddest sight I have ever encounted. Muchm much worse than the three Gulf of Mexico hurricanes that hit us directly down in southern Texas. Down aat old West Quincy, I think those five Burlington Northern engines are still there. And the old Quincy Bridge was just starting to emerge again. In all of God's Great Green Earth...this happened in my old neighborhood. My great aunt, Mrs. Keller, of West Quincy, was never found. Do you remember that the old Quincy Bridge, while it was underwater, was the front cover picture of an issue soon after on NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC. Life in prison was not long enough for that insane fellow who was caught ditching that dike a few hundred yards north of that bridge. Wonder where God is going to place him in the HereAfter? Switching subjects: Garyl...I went to school with some Shacklefords in Ewing. Also, my grandfather, Henry J. Wenneker of Ewing, had the Ball Funeral Home contract to deliver and set up for all their funerals...and we did bury some Shacklefords. And I do believe at least one couple was buried in the Ewing Cemetery. That would have been the late 50's or early 60's. Visiting with the Ball Funeral Home and/or the Lewis County Cemetery archives will give you the answers. I have used the Lewis County Archives for many searches. They are published on-line, alphabetically. I hope this helps Garyl. Well, friend, God Bless you and all of yours. I remain, Very sincerely, "Butch" Wenneker www.VEWenneker@AOL.com PS...Garyl, when you answer, PLEASE, send me your e-mail address. Thanks. 3. A little off subject, but I hope they put Jim Scott down there with Satan, for taking those sand bags off the levee. A lot of people lost their homes & belongings because of him. Sorry to hear about our Aunt.

He came off the ship "Alesto" in 1848 and did creaate that large business empire in St. Louis. I have traced out FrederickWenneker to the ship "City of New York", arriving in New York in1848. The manifest shows him as Frederick Heinrick Wenneker from what is Dortmund (of old East Prussia), Germany. I have traced his parents, the Winkers, to 1790. Try as I might through research and the St. Lewis County Central Library, I can find no signs or possible indications that he was related to us. Our Wenneker married a Hannah Gerrish (1848-1918) of Mt. Sterling, Illinois. They did marry in St. Louis where our Frederick was living. All their children moved up to Quincy in Adam's County. I have had absolutely no idea where Frederick Winker (Later Wenneker) is buried...but it must be in or around St. Louis...but I have located the grave sites of most of his children. Remember that you did once bring me up to date on Katy...who I mistakenly thought died young. Keep me posted friend. When I travel back there...I shall visit you and we will compare notes. PS...How is the farming going around Emerson? God Bless your crops. Take care my friend. Verle E. John Shakespeare (Catherine's father) was living near Rev. John E. Latta. I suspect that Catherine Latta was given her middle name to honor their minister. By the way - the Lattas are also in my family tree on my Springer side. Your info today helped a great deal as well. Glad to know that Ann is buried next to Samuel. I didn't have a death date on Samuel, so you showing he died Oct. 8, 1897 helps with the information on him. I found a death certificate on Ann M.(Noel) Hamilton showing she died Nov. 21, 1924. The certificate showed she was born on Sept. 2, 1833. Hopefully this birth date on the death certificate is the same date you found on the stone! :-) If not, I would have to go with the stone information since I'm assuming it would have been Ann who provided the information on the stone for Samuel and herself. Thank you again! J. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hamlton is on the Dover Cemetery list. Aug. 25, 1828 - Oct. 8, 1897 Ann M. is listed also, but, only has a birthdate. I'm assuming this must have been a double stone and nobody had the death date added to the stone. It says there is a service marker from the funeral home there. Noel who married Samuel Hamilton. According to her death certificate, she is buried in the Dover Cemetery in Lewis County, MO. As I don't know if her husband, Samuel, is buried there or whether there are other Noel family members buried there (either under the Noel or a husband's last name), a trip to the cemetery may become necessary. Is the Dover Cemetery located in Dover or LaGrange, MO? Can someone provide directions to get to the cemetery? 3. I have been to Dover 3 times now... but I don't know good directions to give really... I just know how to get there eventually... and how to eventually get back... it is a little bit out of the beaten path. THe only thing left at Dover is the Dover Baptist Church and the cemetery as far as I know. It is not anywhere close to La Grange. You need to take Hwy 6 and head towards Edina but before you get to Edina you need to take the May-----> turnoff Maywood I think it is called. From there attempting to describe it would probably just get you lost. If you stop at a gas station in Edina there may be an older person there who can describe it. I can also tell you that the Lewis County Historical Society is very friendly and helpful. I have tried to contact the church and such but have not yet had luck at that.
