From the Joplin Globe Newspaper May 5, 2003. From staff reports Sixteen people in Southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas were killed by three tornadoes that swept across the region Sunday. The victims in Missouri, according to county coroners and law enforcement officers, were: Rex Smith, 88, Liberal; John Cassel, Ron Hewitt and Mark Wilcox, ages unavailable, all of Stockton; Dale Taunton, 52, Pierce City; Janet Etheridge and Vickie Lawrence, ages unavailable, both of the Marionville area; Wanda Handly, age unavailable, Monett; and Kenneth LaNear, 71, and his wife, Ethel LaNear, age unavailable, Carl Junction. Eight people were reported as "possibly missing" in Lawrence County. The victims in Kansas were: Julie Green, 50, rural Columbus; Charles Ross Jr., 80, and his wife, Phyllis Ross, 73, rural Galena; Sharon Lashbrook, 48, and George Bolte, 68, both of the Girard area; and Josephine Maghe, 87, Franklin. The 10 deaths in southwestern Missouri were among 18 reported in connection with storms across the state.
