    1. [MOLAWREN-L] Re: MACH
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Mach, Mack, Gohler, GAhler, Velten, Buehler, Roberson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5MB.2ACI/2159.1 Message Board Post: I did not find this Mach family in the published 1910 Census transcription for Lawrence County, but they are in published transcription for 1920. 1920 Census, Missouri, Lawrence County, Peirce Township, family 37: Martin Mach 53-yr AA. AA. AA. 1892Na Mary 41-yr AA. FR. FR. 1895Na Mary 17-yr Okl. AA. AA. Katherine 15-yr Okl. AA. AA. Charles 14-yr Mo. AA. AA. Nicholas 13-yr Mo. AA. AA. Genevieve 11-yr Mo. AA. AA. Vincent 8-6/12-yr Mo. AA. AA. Burnett 6-7/12-yr Mo. AA. AA. [NOTE: AA means Austria in this published transcription.] 1930 Census, Missouri, Lawrence County, Peirce Township, E.D. 55-23, sheet no. 7A, dwelling 158, family 160,: Mach, Martin, head, male, white, 62, married, 1st married at age 26, Austria, Germany, Germany, immigrated 1896, naturalized, laborer, Railroad section Marie, wife, female, white, 51, married, 1st married at age 18, Austria, France, Germany, immigrated 1898, naturalized, occupation listed as none Bernice, daughter, female, white, 17, single, Missouri, Austria, Austria, occupation none dwelling 161(a), family 163(a): Mach, Nicholas, head, male, white, 23, married, 1st married at age 21, Missouri, Austria, Austria, laborer, garage Ines M., wife, female, white, 22, married, first married at age 16, Missouri, Missouri, Missouri, occupation none, Branch, Raymond, stepson, male, white, 6, single, Missouri, Missouri, Missouri Then I found Martin and Mary's tombstones as well as that of their daughter, Genevieve. Lawrence County, Missouri, Tombstone Inscriptions, Vol. 9, Pierce City and Western Pierce Township, St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, p. 66: Mach, Martin, 24 Mar 1868 - 23 Sep 1942 Mary A., 6 Apr 1879 - 3 Nov 1958 Velten, Genevieve, 10 Oct 1908 - [blank] Christian M., 3 Mar 1904 - 13 Jul 1984 Married 5 Oct 1927 Interestingly, I also found the following marriage record in Lawrence County. Lawrence County, Missouri, Marriage Records, Vol. XI, 1912-1918, p. 27: Mack, Martin, 48, Peirce City, to Mary Gahler, 35, Peirce City, 7 Jul 1914, by James A. Vance, J. P. at Peirce City, Book L, p. 186. This indicates that Martin Mach/Mack and Mary Gohler/Gahler were not married until 1914 which is after all of the children listed in the 1920 census were born. Also, the 1930 census record states that Martin was married the 1st time at age 26 and Mary at age 18. It appears that Martin was previously married and then he married Mary as his second wife. Are you certain that Mary was the mother of the children? The spelling of the names in this published transcription may be a phonetic spelling by the J. P. who filed the marriage or a transcription error reading the record. The spelling of Peirce City was changed to Pierce City sometime around the 1920s although many records may spell it either way for many years. Two daughters' marriages are recorded in the next published transcriptions. Lawrence County, Missouri, Marriage Records, XII, 1918-1924, pp. 6 and 39: Beuhler, Wm. Joseph, 23, Verona, to Laura Mack, 19, Peirce City, 29 October 1919, by Fr. Cyril, Catholic Clergyman at Peirce City, Book M, p. 126. Roberson, Charles, 26, Peirce City, to Elizabeth Ella Mach, 19 Peirce City, 22 Apr 1919 by Rev. Sisbert Burkard, Pastor St. Mary's Ch. at Peirce City. Book M, p. 54. These two oldest girls were married before the 1920 census and are listed with their husbands. 1920 Census, Missouri, Lawrence County, Spring River Township, family 81: William J. Buehler 24-yr Ks. Oh. Ind. Laura 19-yr Okl. AA. AA. Ger. 1920 Census, Missouri, Lawrence County, Peirce Township, Peirce City, Ward 1, family 20: Charles Roberson 26-yr Mo. Tn. Ky. Elizabeth 20-yr Okl. Ger. Ger. Age was supposed to be as of Jan. 1, 1920, so these daughters were born in 1899 and 1900 in Oklahoma. You should check the Soundex to the 1900 Oklahoma Territory Census to see if you can find the Martin Mach family. This should resolve the question about their mother, Martin's 1st wife. It is possible that for some reason they were "remarried" in 1914 and had been married all along and their was some legal or other issue about their first marriage which may have occurred in Oklahoma Territory. A possible tombstone for Charles Roberson above; the date of birth matches the census age. Lawrence County, Missouri, Tombstone Inscriptions, Vol. 9, Pierce City and Western Pierce Township, Pierce City Cemetery, p. 33: Roberson, Charles, 25 Jan 1893, buried 1989, Btry B, 338 F.A., CAS DET 40 163rd (a military stone) There is an Andrew Mack family in Peirce City in 1910. Interestingly, they, too, were in Oklahoma before coming to Missouri. They may be related. 1910 Census, Missouri, Lawrence Co., Peirce Township, Peirce City, Ward 4, family 73: Andrew Mack Head 40-yr M-1-15 Ger. Ger. Ger. Katy wife 37-yr 8-4 Ger. Ger. Ger. Annie daug 13-yr s Ger. Ger. Ger. Andrew son 10-yr s Ger. Ger. Ger. Nora daug 6-yr s Okl. Ger. Ger. Bertha daug 2-yr s Mo. Ger. Ger. You should also check the 1910 Miracode (Soundex) for Missouri because Genevieve born in 1908 and Victor born in 1911 are listed as born in Missouri. You should also contact the Catholic Church in Pierce City which may have records on this family. Also, for those whose date of death is given above, you should check for obituaries in the Pierce City newspaper, death certificates, and probate records to identify heirs and their residences.
