    1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] Cemetery Transcriptions
    2. Ross Cameron
    3. Frank, There are nine (9) volumes of Lawrence County Missouri Tombstone Inscriptions that are published and available for purchase from the Lawrence County Historical Society. And others have also published Lawrence County Tombstone Inscriptions, but very few are online. There are people who do lookups in some of these volumes, including myself. Red Oak and Gray's Point Cemetery are both in Red Oak Township. Red Oak, Greene, and Lincoln Townships are in vol. 3, published in 1986, though some of the transcriptions were done earlier than that. Gray's Point is 7 pages and Red Oak is 22 1/2 pages. Mary Curry published a volume just on Red Oak Cemetery, but I do not know if it is still available for purchase. These publications are, of course, copyrighted and cannot be put on the web without the permission of the copyright holder. Though lookups can be done. If you have a lot of family in this area, I would highly recommend you purchase volume 3 from the Lawrence County Histori! cal Society. See http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/society.htm There are five Gulick inscriptions listed for Gray's Point , p.5: Gulick, Clifford, 13 Mar 1908 - 28 Sep 1918 William E., 18 May 1882 - 1 Dec 1962, same stone with (ssw) Daisy Daisy, 22 Aug 1882 - 16 Dec 1974, ssw William E. Lot 59: Davis, Edward, Sr., 1862 - 2 Nov 1951, ssw Pauline Lot 59 (continued): Davis, Pauline, 1872 - 17 Oct 1958, ssw Edward, Sr. Edward E., Jr., 21 Sep 1896 - 20 Oct 1972, ssw Ophelia H. Ophelia H., 12 Dec 1903 - 10 Jan 1977, ssw Edward E., Jr. There are also Gulicks buried at McCune Cemetery (Red Oak Twp.), Round Grove Cemetery (Greene Twp.), and Miller Memorial Gardens (Lincoln Twp.) and Carters and Davises at Miller Memorial. I highly recommend that you visit the cemetery and check these names and dates. Sometimes it is difficult to read names and dates. Sometimes the transcriber made an error transcribing or there is a typo in the publication. Sometimes stones were missed in the transcription or publication. Sometimes those of us who do lookups make an error retyping the information. I would also point out that there are also sometimes errors on the tombstones themselves. Sometimes the stones were put up much later and the people who provided the information for the tombstone gave incorrect information. Sometimes names are misspelled and sometimes dates are wrong. My grandfather Cameron's date of death on his tombstone is actually his date of burial rather than his date of death. He died before I was born and the rest of the family who might have known died before I found out the date was wrong, so I don't know why this happened. I do have his death certificate and his obituary which confirm his actual date of death. He died out of state and his body was brought back to Missouri for burial. Perhaps when the stone was ordered the family did not remember the date of death but did remember the date of burial or just confused the two. Even more seriously, a couple of years ago, I found another distant cousin whose tombstone has the wrong year of birth and year of death. Both are eight years earlier than they should be. The stone was erected many years later by his sister, his only surviving immediate relative. Again I have his obituary, court records, etc. His sister was only a couple of years younger so I don't know for sure why the years are so far off. I have another distant relative for whom the funeral home record gives her date of death as Apr. 8, the newspaper obituary as Apr. 9, and the tombstone as Apr. 10. The best that I can conclude is that it was either Apr. 8 or Apr. 9. The newspaper would not likely have published her obituary before she died, but I do not know for sure whether the funeral home or the newspaper made the error in the date of death. I could list many other examples where dates are wrong or names misspelled, but this at least warns again using only one source for dates or names. Sometimes the information in records conflicts with other records and one has to decide which is most likely correct or accept multiple possibilities. Ross Cameron >>> "Frank Lane" <[email protected]> 04/26/03 08:54PM >>> Can anyone tell me if there are comlete transcriptions on Red Oak Cemetery and Gray's Point Cemetery (both in Red Oak Township I believe). I have tried to find them on MOGENWEB, but could not locate them?? I have family buried in both cemeteries and am very familiar with both of them, but recently tried to find information online without driving over there and couldn't. I live close but still would like to be able to find them online.
