    3. Pat & all, I've been enjoying the discussions reg. 'harvest time' and would love to be included in discussions of 'old' or 'pioneer' families in Lawrence County. Halltown is just one of the particular areas where my ancestors lived. Like so many of the Lawrence Co. researchers on the list, I figure I must be related to many, if not by blood at least by marriage. My ancestors lived in Barry, Lawrence, Dade, Polk, and Greene, often moving back and forth between the counties. My 2nd great grandfather, Thomas NICKEL migrated from Ohio to the area in the late 1830s...living first in and marrying [Jane Hall] in Barry County in 1838. By the time of the 1840 census, he was still in Barry Co., as were his parents, Samuel & Charlotte Nickel, and brothers Samuel, Jr. and family, and James Nickel & family. Land records in the 1840s put Thomas Nickel and his father & brother Samuel, Jr. in Dade & Lawrence Co. Sister & brother-in-law Robert W & Sarah BOLIN and family migrated from Ohio to Dade in the mid to late 1840s. Because of changes in the county boundries, Thomas appeared to move back and forth between Lawrence & Dade, even though he never moved. His farm was near Halltown, where he died in 1898. He, his wife and some of his adult children are buried in Wann Cemetery. My gr grandfather, John Nickel, grandfather Josephus Nickel, and mother Helen Nickel were all born in Lawrence County. John Nickel married Laura Ann Garringer in 1864 in Lawrence Co., while on leave from serving in the 16th MO Cav. during the Civil War. John and Laura are buried in Ash Grove Cemetery. To my knowledge, the Nickel surname for my family no longer exists in the Lawrence, Dade, Greene, etc. areas. Some of my mother's gradeschool years were spent in Mt. Vernon, but during the mid 1920s, the family moved to Springfield, where she graduated from high school, and married the following year. My grandmother died in Springfield, but is buried in the IOOF cemetery at Mt. Vernon, where her parents, and first child, who died at the age of 6, are buried. Many of my collateral lines, Nickel descendants, are still living in the area: GARTON, BLACKBURN, MASON, CALLISON, DOWNING, BOX, GRAVES, DAMERON. My 2nd grandparents, Andrew & Hannah (CARMAN) GARRINGER, from North Carolina, were also early settlers in the area. They are buried in Misemer Cemetery. Many descendants of the GARRINGER/GARNER, KIMMONS/CUMMINS, and WEST lines still live in the area. My gr grandfather, Edwin M. Goodman was sheriff of Lawrence Co. from 1904-1908, and his son-in-law, my grandfather, Joe Nickel, was a 'jailer' in Mt. Vernon. I don't know when, but I would guess that it was when Edwin Goodman was sheriff. Ed and his wife America [Chumbley] are buried in the IOOF cemetery. Like many or most on this list, I have relatives in many of the cemeteries in the area. Two years ago I was very fortunate to be able to stop in Mt. Vernon for a couple of days on my way to and from the FGS Conference in Davenport, IA. It was a very exciting trip and full of many 'firsts' for me. It was the first time I was able to research at the library and courthouse in Mt. Vernon, the library in Springfield, visit 3 local cemeteries, attend the monthly meeting of the Lawrence County Historical Society, of which I've been a member since the 1980s, and best of all the first time to meet and visit with my cousins, Lem and Sue Compton. I am very, very interested in the history of Lawrence and the surrounding counties, and am never bored when members of the list take the time to post all the wonderful information regarding the history of the area. Most often, these are stories that do not appear in the history books for Lawrence, but are an important part of the 'social' history of the area. Please keep the stories coming, and please include me. I would love to correspond/share my information with my cousins. Also, among the few family photos that I have, are a number of individual photos of school children...the little photos that we would trade among our friends, but unfortunately, the photos are not identified, nor do I know if they were of children from the Mt. Vernon area or the Springfield area. Also, I have 2 photos of 2 different school classes, taken outside of the school building, but again, I do not know if this is Mt. Vernon or Springfield. Guessing from the approximate age of my mother in the photo, I believe that they may have been taken in Mt. Vernon. I have a photo of Ruth Hight [her mother Eva was a close friend and school mate of my grandmother Emma (Goodman) Nickel and her sister, Cora (Goodman) Goodman], and there are a couple of pictures of neighbor children with my mother, and one of which is Max Whaley. I also have a photo of my grandmother & Mrs. Whaley together. I would love to find descendants of the photos so that I could share them with them. Since I cannot send attachments to the 'list', anyone who is interested in helping me to identify and find homes for the photos, or just interested in seeing the photos, please send me your e-mail address and I will scan them to you. I apologize for the length of this message. 3. Hello Sharon: May I suggest you put a notice that you are willing to share copies of your photos and are soliciting identification info about others in the online newsletter, Somebody's Links? http://www.petuniapress.com/ They produce two free online newsletters providing this service. The other one is entitled Missing Links, same URL. The two newsletters come out in alternating weeks. These newsletters have put many people in touch with descendants who no longer live in the original area of the photos, bibles, letters, etc. and have pointed the way for a lot of people to retrieve family treasures that have been discovered in antique stores, ebay, or even goodwill and then posted there.
