    1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] Lewis-Allen
    2. Ross Cameron
    3. Hi Michelle, Yes, Lemuel W. Allen, Jr.'s first wife was Mildred Lewis, daughter of Richard C. Lewis, according Lemuel's biography in Ozark Region (1917), Vol. III, History of Lawrence County, Missouri, Biographical, pp. 37-38, which ends with the following paragraph: "His first marriage was contracted in 1878 with Miss Melvina J. Lewis, a daughter of Richard C. Lewis. To this union were born three daughters, Ettie, (Mrs. Press Stockstill); Levada (Preston); and Grace Allen, who is a student in Marionville College. The first Mrs. Allen passed away in 1891, at the age of thirty-three, and rests in the Spring River Camp Ground Cemetery. In 1897 Mr. Allen married as his second wife, Miss Tressie Bogle, daughter of John A. Bogle. Mr. Bogle was a native of Tennessee, from which state he moved to this region. To this marriage has been born one daughter, Lela, who resides with her parents at the family home." Some of the information above is inaccurate based on other sources. I have noticed many errors in these biographies just as there are in the earlier Goodspeed's history. His first wife was Mildred Lewis, not Melvina. He had a sister named Melvina He only had the two daughters by Mildred -- Ettie and Grace. Lavada was Ettie (Allen) Stockstill's daughter, Lemuel's granddaughter. I think the person who took the notes for the biography or the one who wrote it confused the fact that Lavada was a granddaughter. Often these biographies list the spouse and children of each child of the biographee that is married and has children. Lemuel did have three daughters, two by his first wife and one by his second wife. The writer obviously took the three daughters information and changed the notes so that there were three daughters by the first wife instead of a total of three daughters. Etta Allen, 20, Verona, was married to Presley Stockstill, 23, Verona, on 17 July 1901, by George F. Harbour, at the bride's residence, Book I, p. 139 [Lawrence County Marriage Records, Vol. 8, Sept. 1900-Jan. 1904, p. 36 Lemuel, Mildred, and Tressie Allen, and Etta and Lavada Stockstill are buried at Lee Cemetery (also called Campground Cemetery or Spring River Campground Cemetery). Lawrence County Tombstone Inscriptions, Vol. VI, Spring River and Freistatt Townships, Lee Cemetery: p. 63: Stockstill, Lavada, 2 Jul 1902 - 24 Sep 1916 Stockstill, Etta Allen, 28 Oct 1880 - 21 Sep 1967 p. 65: Allen, Mildred J., 1859 - 1891 Lemuel W., 1852 - 1945 Tressie E., 1870 - 1959 Here is an abstract of a brief obituary for Levada from the Aurora Advertiser, even though both of her names are misspelled. The error may be either in the original newspaper or in the transcription. Ruth Browning, Southwest Missouri Newspaper Abstracts, Vol. 27, Aurora Advertiser, Jan. 7, 1915-May 23, 1918, p. 27: "Sept. 28, 1916, Died, Miss Nevada Stocksdill on her way to her home near Oklahoma City. Her grandfather is Mr. Allen. She was buried in the Old Camp Ground Cemetery." I did not find a marriage record for Lemuel W. Allen, Jr. and Mildred J. Because Etta was buried in Lawrence County, I would suggest that you look for an obituary for her in the Lawrence County newspapers even though she may not have died in Lawrence County. That should list her survivors and their places of residence. Even easier would be to check with the Library Center in Springfield, Missouri, because her obituary might also have been published in the Springfield newspapers and they have a published index for the newspapers for 1967. You could also check the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) online for their sons Preston and Gerald Stockstill. Now to the other daughter, Grace Allen, who is related to me by marriage. So based on the information in the 1930 census which says her age was 45 and she was age 36 at first marriage, they were married on or after 15 Sep 1920 and before 15 Sep 1921. I did not find a marriage record for them in Lawrence County. They had no children. Ross Cameron >>> [email protected] 04/13/03 08:09AM >>> Goodspeed's Biography for Lawrence Co. states....."L.W. ALLEN Jr. son of L.W. ALLEN Sr. and Sarah A. SPRINGER Allen " chose for his companion in life Miss Minnie, daughter of R. C. LEWIS, Esq. and this union has resulted in the birth of two children, both daughters, Ettie and Grace." I assume this is Mildred LEWIS daughter of R.C. LEWIS and Eliza GUTHRIE Lewis. RC Lewis is my 3rd gr grandfather and Mildred would be the sister to my gr gr grandfather Richard L. Lewis. Mildred is shown in the 1870 census as living with her father but by 1880 she isn't living at home. The Goodspeeds biography does not state a marriage year. Can anyone help me find marriage or census records for LW Allen and Mildred Lewis? Also I would like any further information and contact with descendents of Ettie or Grace the children of L.W. Allen Jr and Mildred Lewis. Did they have any other children than the 2 listed in the biography ? All help is appreciated.
