Below are samples of articles Ive run across which give a glimpse of the public discourse regarding the terms liberal, socialist, and anarchist during the period Dale mentioned. From The Weekly Empire published Peirce City Missouri 3 June 1884; Thos. Carlin Editor-Publisher: Reprinted by the North Springfield Southwester. A STRANGE COMMUNITY NO GOD, NO DEVIL, NO SPIRITUAL FORCE--NO SIN ON EARTH, NO PUNISHMENT HEREAFTER. ..Mr. Green, the founder and leader of the famous Liberal colony of Liberal, Barton county, is in the city. This town is entirely made up of people who do not believe in any God, devil, hell, heaven, hades, angels, or anything else the evidence of which does not stand out directly before the material eye. Out of the several hundred people who form the population of this town not one of them has any faith in anything held sacred by christian people. Their salvation in the community lies in their skepticism. Their God is their reason, their Savior is their own hands and minds. They worship nothing but their own standards of virtue and right, which is furnished them by their own reason and experience. They defy every approach to their divine nature, and recognize no principle in man which is not derived from sources purely material with them. The mind is the result of physical forces, which ceases to act when the physiological man decays. No spiritual being is recognized; the belief in the supernatural is to them a belief in legends, and legends are the offsprings [sic] of darkness and ignorance. This is a novel and interesting community and startling as the announcement may be it is the only community of people in this world living entirely by themselves in which not a single member recognizes an intelligent power existing above himself. Out of the innumerable billions of people who have inhabited the earth since the creation there has never been one spoken of in history or legend in whom a belief in a higher power of some character does not exist. Please reflect on this startling declaration and see if you can contradict it with any authority whatever. There is not a nation, tribe or society or people {illegible} living apart from the rest of the world which does not have some sort of religious [sic] faith -- which does not believe in an over-ruling, supernatural power. If any one can show we are wrong in this we would be glad to have our ignorance corrected. Mr. Green is a man of liberal culture and high intelligence. The community under his charge is industrious, seemingly happy and very prosperous. They stand however flatly and emphatically contradicting every phase of human belief, instinct and experience. If they have found the light it has been hidden under a bushel from all the myriads who have gone before and all the tribes and nations of men who yet survive. 1901: Wichita, Kan., September 8.-Anarchists, at both Chicopee & Frontenac, small towns 100 miles east of here, held jubilation meetings, to-day & gave thanks over the attempted assassination of the President. The meeting at Chicopee was held in a coal mine beneath the ground & could not be broken up by officers. http://recollectionbooks.com/bleed/09ref.htm Norman, Ok., Sept. 15.-Citizens of Norman are demanding the resignation of Police Judge A. Overstreet because he is reported to have said that it was a shame to arrest Emma Goldman & that it would have been better for the poor people if McKinley had been killed long ago. http://recollectionbooks.com/bleed/09ref.htm Springfield Republican, 17 Sep 1901 Electrocution is too easy for the Presidents assassin. He ought to get something like that which was administered to the negroes of Peirce City, but it should be done according to law. REJECTS FLAG; MOB TRIES TO LYNCH HIM. Guthrie, 0. T., September 19.-Because George Bradshaw, a carpenter, declared [he] would not march under an American flag, an Oklahoma City mob of 500 formed this morning & started to lynch him. They were prevented only by the local militia. Excitement is still high & the mob is hunting for Bradshaw, who is concealed. If found he will be lynched. http://recollectionbooks.com/bleed/09ref.htm Springfield Republican, 19 Sep 1901 ALMOST A RIOT Fred P. Young Is Alleged To Have Maligned Ex-President McKinley. Approached in his store on College St about 5 o'clock yesterday by Fred Macon and Mr. Ryan who asked if the rumors were true, Young told them to leave. Crowd gathered in and there were cries of lynch him. Young was struck on the head by some one during the row and blood flowed. The police soon appeared and dispersed the crowd. Mr. Young makes the following statement: To whom it may concern: There have been a number of rumors come to my ears of my having made derogatory remarks or expressing a satisfaction or joy at Mr. McKinleys death. It is false and a malicious lie. As an American citizen and Socialist I deplore the death of our President as much as any man. In fact, I deplore the death of any and all men, it matters not from what source. The charge also that I am an Anarchist is absolutely false. Respectfully, Fred P. Young. Springfield Republican, 19 Sep 1901 Leon Czolgosz hanged and burned in effigy on the public square about eight oclock last night. A dummy prepared with the face of a hog, pulled up and tied to the railing of the band stand on the tower in the center of the square. Hanging from the neck and arms were placards reading: Death to all anarchists! A Lesson to All Assassins! The Fate of All Anarchists! Amid shouts and cheers from a large crowd the dummy was cut down, saturated with coal oil and set on fire. A long rope was attached to the neck and by this it was dragged around and around the square at a dead run. Not a word was heard that was not an expression of approbation nor indeed would it have been safe for any one to have expressed any other sentiment. on every corner and in every place of amusement last night one might hear men say that they would be glad to help run the last one out of town, some favor hanging and some advocate burning but all free to express their sentiments in public. One city official was heard to say last night, I would not help hang one of them but I would gladly help tar and feather every one of them. Springfield Republican, Sunday 22 Sep 1901 At any rate the country can rest assured that Czolgosz will not be permitted to take the lecture field or to write a book. By the time the 1905 elections rolled around, Fred Young was able to run for Springfield City Council on the Socialist ticket without fearing for his life (lost by a wide margin) and a columnist with the Republican admitted to knowing several socialists who did not have horns and cloven feet or eat babies for breakfast, although he described the political philosophy as childish.
