Hi Patricia, When the Wormingtons came to southwest Missouri about 1839, the land that they settled on was indeed in Barry County. So Edward, Asa, and J. W. are all in the 1840 Barry County Census. Then on 14 February 1845, Lawrence County was organized (partly from Barry and partly from Dade counties) and the Wormington property was in the new Lawrence County. So you are right that they didn't "move" but the land they owned became part of a new county in 1845. When Barry County was organized from part of Greene County in 1835, Barry County included the whole southwest corner of Missouri, apparently including all or part of at least eight present-day counties -- Barry, Lawrence, Dade, Cedar, McDonald, Newton, Jasper, and Barton. So before Barry County was organized in 1835, that land was part of Greene County. And before Greene County was organized in 1833 [for example, when the first settler, Judge John Williams arrived in Oct. 1831], that land was part of either Crawford or Wayne County or both depending on which histories are correct. I am not sure how long you have not been subscribing, but there have been 101 messages on MOLAWREN containing the name "Wormington": 24 in 1997, 13 in 1998, 20 in 1999, and 44 so far this year. Of those, this year, 16 mention Edward and most of those are either to or from or in response to a message from you. The Wormingtons have certainly been mentioned quite a few times on MOLAWREN. As you know, Edward Wormington and Ann Hassell are one of the 12 Pioneer Families of Southwest Lawrence County, MO. They are mentioned in many county records and histories. I see your name, etc., on the list of "members" of the 12 Families Reunion Group which I received from Bud Burke this week. I am a "member" too though I am not descended from any of the 12 families, I am related by marriage to some of them and so some of my "cousins" are descended from them. Ross Cameron >>> LndsayRose@aol.com 08/10 10:10 AM >>> Hi Everyone I am surprised not to find a single mention of my ancestors who were residents of Lawrence County for at least three generations. There is a big mix up on the birthdates of most of Asa Hassell Wormingtons children I got info from a family bible 1st then all the gravestones didn't match. Then other descendents have given completely different dates. Jonathon Hawley Wormington's data is definately correct. After much research this is what I have. I welcome any documented or knowledgable corrections 2. ELIZER ANN WORMINGTON b. Jan 18, 1824 Sumner Co TN Elizer must have died young as she is no where to be found after birth. 3.NANCY A.
