I also remember hearing the story of the lynchings in the square in Springfield. My Mom was not born until 1917 but she had heard the story from her parents and passed it on to us. Her father William Edward Mayabb at one time worked on the streetcars in Springfield. Does anyone know what year they were installed? Thanks, Kaye
Kaye, The mule-drawn street cars were begun in 1881. Electric streetcars were installed in 1885. Information is from "Crossroads at the Springs, A Pictorial History of Springfield, Missouri" Edited by Shannon Boyle and Julie Marsh, Springfield History Museum; Donning Co Publishers, 1997. A mock funeral was held for the system on 2 Aug 1937.
