    1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] LOST
    2. Bowers Mill was at the very western border of the county. In fact, the west street was called ‘Jasper and Lawrence County Line’. “A Brief History of Lawrence Couty Missouri, 1845-1870” describes (in the first seven paragraphs) The village of Oregon or Lyons or Bowers Mill as a bustling community in the 1860’s to1880’s, naming churches, doctors, mills and tradesmen, all centered around Spring River. ‘The disappearance of Bowers Mill is due largly to a fire which destroyed a number of the priciple business houses and an overflow of Spring River which carried away what the fire did not destroy. The post office was moved and combined with LaRussell’s Post Office.” but the town had already been rebuilt once: “The village of Oregon or Bowers Mill in the year 1863 was sacked and burned by Col. Jo Shelby and was a most stiring event. The town rebuilt following the war and became an important trading point for many years.” At end of article is a picture of a brick building “Bowers Mill School- with addition 1963.” Just above the picture of the school: “The grave stone which marks the grave of G F Bowers may still be seen at the former site of Bowers Mill. Nothing exists now but three homes.” Bowers Mill is still shown on the Missouri General Highway map, near the Jasper County line, about 7-8 miles from Stotts City to the east. Goodspeed’s 1888 History Reprint states that Bower’s Mill was settled in the (18) 30’s by Uncle Billy Bowers and the mill was erected in 1838. bill
