My grandmother was Elva Davis who married Henry Davis. Elva was the daughter of Thomas B. Davis, and granddaughter of Harden and Nancy Davis. I was so pleased to read more about some of the other Davis relatives today on MoLawrence. Thanks for sharing. Gail in Indiana

William and Gilly's first son was named James Samuel. Gilly's father was Samuel Smith Williams. If this naming pattern was followed, then William's father's name was James. The first daughter was named Sarah E. and the E. may have been for Elizabeth because Gilly's mother was Elizabeth. That could mean that William's mother may have been Sarah. The second son was named William, presumably after his father and the second daughter named Gillie, presumably after her mother, which was also often part of this naming pattern. William and Gilly were living very near Timothy W. Davis in the 1850 census. Timothy W. was also 30 and born in NC, like William, at least as recorded in this census. William was killed by bushwhackers during the war. Timothy was captured by Capt. Toney's company but escaped. And Harden and Nancy Davis were killed by bushwhackers. William Riley Davis, 32, and Harden, 28, are also listed in 1850 as born in North Carolina. This may or may not indicate any connection between these various Davis families. Can you can shed any light on the Harden and William Riley Davis family and how it might connect to William and/or Timothy Davis. Pat, You might e-mail the newspaper library at the State Historical Society in Columbia about the Marionville paper. A year or so ago I e-mailed to ask if they had St. Louis paper films of 1896 to find information about a relative who was killed in an industrial explosion. My intent was to get the papers ILL and look for the information. They replied they had found 17 items on the subject and would loan the papers or send copies for $12, as I remember. I sent for the copies and received a great amount of information. It seems that one obituary would not be so very expensive. You might check -- hope this might help. The e-mail address for the page is: <http://www.umsystem.edu/shs/newspaper.shtml>. Alice On Mar 22, 2007, at 10:25 PM, Pat Miller wrote: > Jane, > I was hoping that it was available in Mt. Hi Maggie, I am sure the Miller and Mt. Vernon Libraries will be happy to have a copy. The cemetery listings at the Mt. Vernon Library are actually maintained by the Lawrence County Historical Society. If possible, I would be interested in receiving a copy, too. Although I have transcriptions of the Davis Cemetery from the LCHS Tombstone Inscriptions book and Mary Curry's book, there are a few differences. So another transcription would be useful to compare. And there may be more recent stones, too. I have several transcriptions of the Old South Bend (a/k/a Patton, Hoshaw, Shelton, Mahan, Hopewell) Cemetery, including one I made in the 1960s. No two of them agree completely. So it is always good to have more than one person's reading/transcription/printing of tombstone inscriptions of a cemetery. On another note -- which postings to MOLAWREN often lead to -- are you a Davis family researcher? I have a Davis relative whose parents I have not been able to identify. Gilly S. Williams [Note: Gilly is a nickname for Abigail; her full name is probably Abigail Smith.] born 22 Sep 1833, near Mount Vernon, Lawrence Co. (then part of Greene Co.), Missouri died 22 Nov 1884, Greene Co., Missouri bur. Blades Chapel Cemetery, Greene Co., Missouri mar., 1st, 12 Apr 1849, Lawrence County, Missouri William Davis son of (?) Davis, born ca. 1851-52, Lawrence Co., Missouri William H. Davis, born ca. 1853-54, Lawrence Co., Missouri Gillie Ann Davis, born 18 Jan 1856/57, Lawrence Co., Missouri After William's death Gilly mar., 2nd, 14 Jun 1863, Greene Co., Missouri Ransom Dudley Blades One of many naming patterns was for the first son to be named for his two grandfathers and the first daughter for her two grandmothers. And Harden and Nancy Davis were killed ! by bushwhackers. Would it be possible to add my name to those wanting the book "Wire Road"? I've just discovered an ancestor who had a house on that road. Thanks, Carolyn Rowell ________________________________ From: molawren-bounces@rootsweb.com on behalf of jay trace Sent: Fri 3/23/2007 7:11 AM To: molawren@rootsweb.com Subject: [MOLAWREN] Wire Road/Trail of Tears books Hello there, I wanted you all to know that I've let Ted Roller know about everyone that indicated an interest in either the "Down The Wire Road" book or the Trail of Tears book that was discussed here in the last few days. I know that a portion of the proceeds from "Wire Road" goes to the Barry County Genealogical & Historical Society, and we really appreciate your interest. I hope that you all are as riveted as I was with the stories from the Old Wire Road. Luckily, Fern Angus compiled all of them before she passed away, and then Ted added to them. It's sad to think of all the stories that WEREN'T saved and now are lost forever. Hi Pat, I have a listing of the newspaper microfilms at the McCanse Library in Mount Vernon. The LCHS has purchased some more newspapers since I got this listing. The listing I have shows no issues of the Marionville Free Press available at Mount Vernon at that time. I will see about getting an updated list. Hi Cora, There is tombstone inscription for: Nickless, Rosie Frances, 6 Jan 1901 14 Feb 1936 in Block 42, Lot 28, Maple Park Cemetery, Aurora in Lawrence County Missouri Tombstone Inscriptions, Vol. 4, Aurora Township, p. 99. There is also a death certificate for the same date and the name is given as: Rosie F. Nickles, died February 14, 1936, Lawrence Co., Cert. # 6599 Rosie's last name may be misspelled on the tombstone or there could have been a typo or transposition of letters in the transcription or printing of the book. Is this the Rosie you are looking for? Edward Bolton is buried in Block 42, Lot 23, which is not far from Rosie's. There is no Nickels (or variant spelling) Cemetery listed in the Aurora book. The surnames Nichols, Nicklas, Nickless in the index are all buried at Maple Park. Eleanor, I've emailed you privately. If you found a McNatt from Missouri then I'm probably related. There is a North Carolina/Tennessee branch that we can't prove relationship...but I'm sure that we are from many many generations ago.
