    3. I will try not to repeat what I have written earlier to the list. I do not purpose a Ancestory.com which is a pain to say the least. I just purpose that the USGENWEB site be updated to handle a lot of information we all could use. Just as the example I cited first go to the following if you haven't been there before http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/ Now go to this one if you haven't been there before http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/data/index.htm Now both of these are USGENWEB sites. I rest my case and will give the list a rest. Like I say I tried to make my case earlier with several emails. Now it is time for me to keep quiet. Thanks and Happy Hunting. Or did I misunderstand what was said? It will never happen if that is what you are trying to start. Rootsweb-Ancestry-and all others are connected in some way. This is free (Rootsweb) and a chance to connect to other family members and exchange information to further your line. To come in and try to change a good thing although to have the information free would be nice but a dream, will not work. Even the information you receive here on roots and/or anyplace else should be used as a guide line. I just want to thank all people that have put the Rootsweb together and keeps it running and free. USGENWEB does have free information and is connected to Rootsweb. Eleanor Prieskorn Warsaw Missouri May 2, 2007 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! 2. Lisa, The Austin farm is directly east of the pipeline substation and tank farm. The farmhouse is clearly visible from U.S. 66 (now Mo. 96), and the Austin farm is separated from the tank farm by a paved road. These are about 3 miles east of Mo. 39 hwy. I do not know who currently owns this property. Dale ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Those roads are not marked great down there. Those big gas tanks are still there. Just newer. The Jewel Waterson house is next door to my Aunt Judy Hood's house. As a child I would walk with my cousins to visit the ladies that lived in that house when I would visit down there. One of them was my mom's Sunday school teacher when she was a girl. I think her name was Mary. I sent this to my parents to see if they could give you good directions. I might also forward it to Aunt Judy with your email address. 3. Hi Group, Since there are inquiries about Stevenson/Stephenson, thought I would add mine. My Grandmother Mintora Abigail Lee (Wilhite) married a Bennie Stephenson after her first husband James Andrew Wilhite passed away 1934 in Garfield, Ar. >From what my father told me his mother and Bennie after marrying lived in Cherryvale, Kansas for a while and then in Billings, Missouri. Mintora died in Billings Jan. 1963 before I was born and Bennie died September 15, 1973, both buried at Ruddick Cemetery, Garfield, Benton Co., Arkansas. After Mintora passed away I was told that Bennie sent a trunk that belonged to her to one of his sisters. The trunk contained my fathers Navy uniforms and my Uncle who was MIA in WWII belongings, memorabilia. I was wanting to track Bennie's siblings in hopes that one of his siblings decendants still living might have that trunk. My father and his siblings are all deceased and none of them new much about Bennie's family, etc. Bennie was born October 28, 1891, place unknown. I have not been able to find him or Mintora on a census record anywhere, nor a marriage record for them. Any help would be appreciated. Sincerely, Sharon Wilhite Day __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

    3. My grandparents were JN "Nate" and Verna Austin-my husband & I may take a quick trip back to MO this summer and I'd like to see their farm. I haven't been there in 40 years and was wondering if anyone is familiar with it and if someone could could me an address (the only one we had was RR #2, Mt. Vernon, MO) and good directions. There were some big tanks-oil or gas-that went in across the road and up a bit and it seems like the Brick Church was up the road across the highway past my great aunt's house-she was Jewel Waterson. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Lisa Hensley (also, does anyone know who owns their farm now? how about my Aunt Jewel Waterson's place?)

    3. Heather: Amazingly enough, when David Stephenson, died 17 May, 1916, in Doniphan County, Kansas, his obituary gave his name as David Stevenson. However, the Bellemont Cemetery records of near Wathena, Kansas, recorded his name correctly as Stephenson. It seems that Stevenson & Stephenson have been used over the years, interchangeably. Also, one has to remember that in the early days some folks could not read or write, and information probably was recorded incorrectly and the people were unaware of the incorrect recording. Also, his obituary gave only the name of his daughter, with whom he lived at the time of his death. There was no mention of his wife and other children. 3. Sounds like a different Stevenson family. Also, I wonder whether they divorced and she claimed to be a widow. That happened a lot in my family, where women would claim to be widows on a census or something, but their ex-husband was alive in another household on the same census. 3. Dennis: I cringe to think of lost graves and would like to hope that it didn't really happen...that no one could be that insensitive to the memories of the deceased. Unfortunately, I've heard too many such stories in various States, so it is hard to deny it happened. My 2 great grandmother, Elizabeth Burton, and her granddaughter, Rebecky Vermillion, does have a stone, which we finally found a few years ago. The first few visits to Summit, we did not find them, but somehow their stone became visible. I think someone somewhere in Lawrence Co, must have had some records and cleared off the stone enough so we could find it the next time we visited. It was buried so deeply there is no way it "just uncovered itself". For whatever reason, I'm just grateful to whomever dug it out for me. It is possible my great grandparents are buried next to them as well in unmarked graves, and I may have to accept that and choose to believe they are there. 1. Re: [MOLAWREN] Summit church/Vermillion/Burton
    2. Jan Lopez
    3. Robina, Yes, there is a ton of Vermillion's in Dade, Lawrence, Barry and LaClede Counties, MO. All of them are connected, and alot of them descend from Reuben and Rebecca Vermillion, my 2 great grandparents, and their 13 children. My great grandfather, Zachariah Vermillion, was first married to Mary J. Halabaugh in Barry Co. on 9/13/1855 and had 2 children Joseph Marion Vermillion (died in Marionville in 1936) and Thomas J. Vermillion (died in Jan 1895 and is the one buried at Zion). I did not find a record of what ended that marriage, but I assume Mary J. died. Zachariah then married (before May 1862) Mary Catharine Burton Parker, who had 4 Parker children, Goodmon Brown Parker, William J. Parker, Sarah Elizabeth Parker and Samuel M. Parker. I would love to find more information about where they are buried. Zachariah and Mary Catharine subsequently had 8 children, Rebecky (died in 1871 and is buried at Summit--her grandma, Elizabeth Burton, and her name are on the same stone), Clarinda M. (married James Hunnell and moved to CA. She died in 1940 in Santa Clara), John C. Vermillion (died in 1884 and is buried at Summit), James M. (died in 1916 in OK), Zachariah (Jr who married in Jasper Co and is buried in St Clair Co--died in 1924), Robert Henry (my grandfather who died in 1930 near Altamont, Labette Co, KS is buried at North Edna Cemetery, Edna, KS), Nancy June (died in Washington Co, OK in 1913), and Rosa May died in 1950 in ID. Rosa May married Fred Rodgers in 1895 in Lawrence County and moved to Boise ID. The last trace I have of my great grandfather, Zachariah, was when he signed for Rosa to marry on Aug 23, 1895. The last trace I have of my great grandmother was on the 1880 census except for referral to her as the mother John C. when he died in 1884. Samuel and Elizabeth Dale Burton had 4 children: E. D. Burton, Lemuel J. Burton, Mary Catharine Burton, Sarah A. Burton. There was another child, Edward Smith, in their household who was older than the others so not sure of his connection. Samuel Marion Burton, my 2 great grandfather signed a deed to his property in 1901, and that was the last trace of him. Elizabeth died in 1881 and is buried at Summit. Thanks for all the information being made available regarding my family. 3. Eleanor: I have passed on what was told to me. The road runs along what is now the south side of the cemetery and supposedly some folks may have been covered over, or may be now, on the south side of the road as it is now. I was told that there were some unmarked graves at that time. My guess is that my gr-gr-grandmother's grave was not marked. Family legend is that she was visiting her brother, John F. Griffith, at the time of her death. I was never able to contact anyone at the church to really get information as to when the first burials were made there and who has ever had the early records for the cemetery, or if they were destroyed somewhere through time. I agree with you that it is disgraceful that those buried there were covered over in some way, or placed out of the cemetery by road building. 3. Heather: Temple Stevenson was the name recorded on her death certificate. She was born Louisa Temple Griffith, ca. 1836, in Kentucky. She married David Stephenson, 21 September, 1856, in Nodaway County, Missouri. She evidently died at the home of her brother, John F. Griffith, near Mt. Vernon, and he was the informant on the death certificate. Her spouse, David Stephenson, was still living in Doniphan County, Kansas, at the time of her death, although she was listed as widow on her death certificate. I have been unable to find an obituary on her, so details are sketchy. John F. Griffith is buried in Aurora, Missouri. It seems the earlier burial records were destroyed and someone finally told me that a road had been built through the cemetery at some point in time, and some graves ended up being south, across the east-west road and some graves are thought to have been buried underneath the road. Dennis, You mean to tell me that there was a road or highway put down on top of a grave or some graves? That is the most disgraceful thing I have ever heard what type of person would allow such a thing to happen? It must have something to do with money, which is the lowest act I could think of to do to the remains of a person, I was told when young it was disgraceful to even walk on a grave, this is very bad. Ugh. That was very, very wrong. Who ever let that happen should be very ashamed of them selves. I could go on but what good would that do, shame shame on them. Eleanor Prieskorn Warsaw Missouri -----Original Message----- From: molawren-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:molawren-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Dennis Sent: Tuesday, May 01, 2007 7:44 AM To: molawren@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MOLAWREN] Volunteering, Museum, Lawrence Co Summit Cemetery,Vermillion and Burton Jan: Last year I discovered that my gr-gr-grandmother, Temple Stevenson, name actually--Louisa Temple Stephenson died in Lawrence County on 14 March, 1910 and buried in the Summit Cemetery, on 15 March, 1910. I was at the library there and was given various phone numbers to contact people. It seems the earlier burial records were destroyed and someone finally told me that a road had been built through the cemetery at some point in time, and some graves ended up being south, across the east-west road and some graves are thought to have been buried underneath the road. The Missouri Death Certficate shows her as being buried there, so I console myself with the thought that I will never find her grave, but that the cemetery is well cared for, unlike so many old country cemeteries.
