    3. Thank you for the plethora of information!!!! Aunt Jewel was married to B. Bascom Watterson (I still don't know what the "B" stood for)-her name was Donna Jewel. Aunt Mary never married. I believe my great grandparents house was right next door or across the road-in the general vicinity anyway. They were Aaron and Turissa Austin. My grandmother, Verna Pierce Austin, did not allow us to go up and see Aunt Jewel or Aunt Mary because the Austin's never treated her very good. You see, Verna was pregnant when she and Nate got married, and the Austin's never let her forget that. I didn't know that information until my Aunt Mary Ellen Austin Marsh came to ABQ, NM for my mother's funeral in 1994. My grandmother, Verna, was one of the hardest working most talented women I have ever known. My grandfather Nate (John Nathan) on the other hand was happy sitting at home and growing alfalfa-he was happy with very little. Grandma had a lot of ambition-a mismatch really. But I have to tell you-I loved them both and really loved Grandpa's laid back attitude (now that I've been married 28 years I understand Verna's irritation with Grandpa more and more! ha). Any information you can provide will be appreciated. Lisa Hensley

    3. Hi Heather, No, with my luck I was not able to find an Obituary, however I have thought about trying to order his death certificate. That might at least tell me where he was born and maybe his parents names. While at the library the other day I did find a WWI Draft Registration with a Bennie Stephenson, exact birthdate as my Bennie that lead me to Poweshiek Co., IA. Also I found a Bennie with the same month and year of birth(Oct 1891) as my Bennie on the 1900 census with father Charlie B., and mother Rosa E. Stephenson(nee Bever). There was only one sibling that was a female on this census and she was 2 years older then Bennie, her name was Ettie, b. Sep 1889. My Aunt had told me that Bennie sent Grandma's trunk to his sister, somewhere up north of me. I can't remember for sure but now that I think about it, it could have been Iowa. Thanks for your help. 3. Hi Pat, William Stevenson is in Anderson Co., Kansas on the 1860 census. A kind researcher looked for him in cemetery records, but didn't find him. I haven't tried looking for a will or probate record yet, but I could put it on my LDS wish-list. It does look like his son, Calvin, moved to Oregon, while sons Jesse and Porter stayed in Kansas. - Heather http://surgerysupport.uchicago.edu/hblair/ On Wed, 2 May 2007, Pat Miller wrote: > Heather, > I have bunches of Kansas people that have nothing online or even in > books. 3. Those bushwhackers were pretty horrible during the War. Our family has a legend that my 2g-grandfather (John William Motley, 1842-1922) avoided being killed by bushwhackers after being captured by the CSA and released (minus his gun) by lying down next to a log and covering himself with leaves. The bushwhacker stood on that very log, but didn't stumble across my 2g-grandfather and we descendants are here to tell the story. - Heather http://surgerysupport.uchicago.edu/hblair/ On Wed, 2 May 2007, Eleanor Prieskorn wrote: > Heather, many people left in 1860/1861 do to the upset and the Civil > War starting, and there were many that moved to Texas, > In 1861 my Gr GR grandfather Clem Davis was killed by citizens > (also called Bushwhackers) he was buried almost the spot where he was killed > Old Wire Road, it was said he was killed by the Reb's in a fight, but he was > turned over to the Bushwhackers and killed. 3. Heather, I have bunches of Kansas people that have nothing online or even in books. They're there, but the Kansas counties are sort of like Lawrence Co., only worse. Do you have any idea what part of Kansas they went to? You almost have to find someone in Kansas who will do the research for you and not many of us can afford that. Also, a good many people who went to Kansas went on to Washington and Oregon. They also went down into No Man's Land/Oklahoma Territory and such. No census records, that I know of, for that area. 3. Thank you for the link Jerry. MANNING, W. P. HILTON, NANCY B. JUN 13, 1849 found Gr gr Grandfather's marriage to 2nd wife Berry Co. by The lists below were originally transcribed by Mrs. Mildred F. Roden from records located at the Barry County Courthouse. Mrs. Roden has graciously given us her permission to re-type and sort the lists, for online display. It is her hope that descendents of the people on the lists "might be able to find a connection to their family". No attempt has been made to change Mrs. Roden's original work. Special thanks to Marilyn Pfitzner, who found the list and brought it to our attention. I do not purpose a Ancestory.com which is a pain to say the least. I just purpose that the USGENWEB site be updated to handle a lot of information we all could use. Just as the example I cited first go to the following if you haven't been there before http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/ Now go to this one if you haven't been there before http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/data/index.htm Now both of these are USGENWEB sites. I rest my case and will give the list a rest. Like I say I tried to make my case earlier with several emails. Now it is time for me to keep quiet. Thanks and Happy Hunting. This is free (Rootsweb) and a chance to connect to other family members and exchange information to further your line. To come in and try to change a good thing although to have the information free would be nice but a dream, will not work. Even the information you receive here on roots and/or anyplace else should be used as a guide line. I just want to thank all people that have put the Rootsweb together and keeps it running and free. 2. I think that I will jump in here! I am in Ohio and have a lost g.grandmother, Eleanor Jane McDorman/Dorman Downey McIntosh, somewhere in MO or KS. Last time she was seem in the 1880 census of Lawrence, MO, living with son, Harwell Downey and next door to daughter and son-in-law, Samuel and Rebecca Downey Morgan, so I am on this list. The lists have been great for me as I am always hoping to find others researching that family in MO and specifically MOLawren and Kansas. It has been about 7 years since I started researching and just this week, someone contacted me asking about a Badgley - didn't have her! And then discovered that she was the second wife that I had been looking for all this time and there she was in my own Greene Co. OH, only she had married for a third time. We now have her maiden name, all three married names and only lack the grave site but that will be coming soon. It took 4-5 of us on our Rootsweb site plus an e:mail to the Archives of Greene Co. and five years of trying. That is what the free and sharing Rootsweb is all about. I admit that I am very frustrated by the search feature which throws me over to Ancestry, as if I had a membership and could search there. I also have a problem with the new board system which I still don't understand. I rarely use the boards. It is too time consuming to search them. I use my Google search and AOL search which many times throws me into Rootsweb. So, you all do your searching and have a good time doing it. Remember when all is found and you are done with gening, you will miss the wonderful dialogue with each other. I love my life in the world of genealogy and also love the wonderful souls who do it. 3. Linda, Yeah for you. Because of the free Rootsweb and the lists, I also found or was found by, descendents of my ggrandfather. I actually didn't think there were any other descendants, but they proved me wrong. I appreciate what is online and although it would be nice that everything I want was out there, I have found an amazing amount online. Oh, yes, I also found cousins that I would never have found. It is sad that Ancestry.com is no longer going to offer their services to the LDS local history libraries. Another thumbs down for Ancestry/paid genealogy services. The LDS sites information is free and if you look, might find a lot of Lawrence County, MO info there (I haven't tried). It's just hard to navigate on dial-up. The 1970's. I will enter my names again here, Davis-Manning-Lee- Clemuel P Davis & Martha Priestley Davis died between 1861-1879 Stone Co William P Manning, son George, son William, 1st wife Lutitia McNabb Manning, son by 2nd wife Asa b&d 1860 Stone Co. Green co, McDonald, and Lawrence. Lewis Runo Lee b 1805 KY d Pineville McDonald Co Mo 1881-1882 So I keep looking, maybe someday.
