Pat, My husband and I were at Orange Cemetery last summer and I have pictures of 9 Hillhouse tombstones, including one for Robert, b. 23 Feb 1873, d. 22 Jan 1910. Who was the wife of your Robert Hillhouse? I am looking for the Robert Clint Hillhouse that married Minnie Bell Phariss11 Sept 1895. Minnie was my husband's 2nd cousin, four times removed. Pat, The Jones Memorial Building is where the Museum is also, northeast of the Square. From the Square you go east off the street in the center of the Square which is naturally Center Street. It is 4 blocks, down the hill and then back up to the top of the hill [Mount Vernon City Cemetery is north (turn left) off Center Street going up the hill, if you want to check it out (ha!)] to East Street, pretty much the top of the hill. It used to dead end into the McVey property, but Center St. has been extended. Then turn left (as Jerry says, there will probably be a sign). East Street becomes Lawrence (Farm Road) 1137 You go down the hill, across the railroad tracks (are they still there?), across Williams "Town" Creek, and a little further the Jones Memorial Building is on the right on the hillside before you get to Highway 174 to the golf course. If you want to see the map go to www.google.com, click on maps, enter Jones Memorial Chapel, Mount Vernon, Missouri in the Search box and click on Search. It will bring up a map which you can zoom in on to see the street names. The symbol showing where the Jones Chapel is located is actually a little north of where it should be, but you can't miss seeing it and the Adamson Cabin on the right as you go north on 1137. If you want to see the building click on Hybrid and it will show you the streets and a satellite image (aerial photo) of the area. Received from the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce The Library will e open next Saturday 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. They are closed Sunday and will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day Weekend.
Ross, Thanks, I have walked the entire Mt. Vernon City cemetery, so I know where it is and I'm sure that I can now find the museum, the golf course, the log house and I remember where 174 is. I spent hours finding a cemetery that was way out NE of Mt. Vernon, at the very end of a road. Then I decided to try a different way back to Mt. Vernon. That was fun. ;-), but finally, after winding all over the country I found myself back at 174. If I remember correctly, 174 crosses 44 and goes to Chesapeake. Half way between 44 and Chesapeake is K hwy that goes South to Aurora. To my old stomping grounds. I really should know Mt. Vernon better. Dr. George delivered my second son at his clinic there. Could someone tell me the name of the library at Mt. Vernon? I have been trying to find their web site for their hours. Pat Miller
Just follow the signs like I did lol It had been a long time since I was there last year also. Mt Vernon isn't that big. The Library is off the square on water street. Hope you have a good time there.
