But.... Are you talking about the Village Square Colonial Apartments, on the northwest corner of the square? Or the Hotel Mt. Vernon which once sat on the north side of the square where the tire store is now? The first was built in the early-mid 1880's. Bits about it can found in the local newspapers. The latter was built in 1889 and destroyed by fire in 1909. There is rather more about it in the newspapers. There was a restaurant with the hotel. some space was used by other businesses. Pool hall, too! It was managed by different parties almost yearly and was probably never much of a money maker for the group of original investors. We have a photo of it under construction and another of the rear around 1900. A third shows a portion of the roof in the winter of 1889-90. This one shows all of downtown Mt. Vernon shot from the roof of the Presbyterian Church, looking to the north, up Main Street. Re Deb Rowe's question on the Haley House. I don't know if George Haley had anything to do with the hotel on the northwest corner of the square. I do know he had a hotel on South Hickory Street as far back as 1867. It was call the "Haley House." In an ad in the Spring River Fountain it is located as "House on Cassville Street, Geo. Haley, Prop." I believe Cassville Street is the modern Hickory Street. There is precedence for this. Center Street was once called Springfield Street. I think, way back when, a main street leading away from the center of a town was often named for the next large town/county seat it encountered. Just pointing the way. The route wasn't a straight shot. There is a Mt. Vernon Street in Springfield and one in Stotts City, too. What is your interest? Let me know if yu want more specifics. End of MOLAWREN Digest, Vol 2, Issue 106 Gary, thank you so much for your reply. Now I am uncertain....didn't realize there were two, and always thought it was the one on the corner. However, I also thought there was a restaurant, and that my great grandmother was involved with that along with great grandfather, so maybe it was the second one. I am talking about Daniel James Hunt and his wife Amanda Clementine Trower Hunt, parents of my grandfather Alonzo Hunt. I can't put my hands on it at the moment but have a newspaper clipping reporting that "hotel man D.J. Hunt returned from a visit with......" Family stories about Amanda and her cooking in the past. It is all very sketchy, and I don't know if I can hope to find any better information. If there is anything else about Daniel and Amanda and the hotel, I would really like to have it. Not sure if I met you when I visited a LCHS meeting several years ago or not. There were a lot of people there, and I was impressed with the materials available, both there and at the McCanse Library. I was born and raised to the age of about 11 in Mt. Vernon. In recent years, I discovered that Martha Pennington Castleman, a 1st to 4th grade classmate and friend, lives just a few miles from me and we have visited since. We are in Ca. near San Francisco. She recently attended the high school reunion. Thank you again for the information, and anything else you can offer is most welcome. 3. Thanks everyone for all of the directions and assistance concerning our trip to Lawrence County. I got to spend more than half a day at the library in Mt. Vernon. Gary Doughtrey was there and found a newspaper announcement from 1927 for my mother's sister. I found quite a few other things too and met a Miller researcher that I might be able to help. We also got to the museum and I could identify some people in early pictures; that was really interesting. We didn't get to spend as much time as we'd like to have because we couldn't leave the dog in the car very long. Maybe next year. They have done a really good job with the County history. The log cabin was closed; maybe next time. We spent time at Rock Prairie Cemetery in Halltown (went to the cemetery meeting), Grammar Cemetery near Marionville (where my Cox and McNatt early relatives are), Orange Cemetery north of Aurora on K HWY (Where my Calhoun relatives are) , Marionville IOOF Cemetery (We have McNatt, Cox, Phillips and more there) and Maple Park in Aurora (we're related to a majority there). There are great things going on at Maple Park with a military memorial project. Pat Miller Dallas

BUT LIKE YOU WE HAD SO MUCH TO DO AND ONLY COULD SPEND ABOUT 9 HOURS BETWEEN THE 2 DAYS THERE AT THE LIBRARY. THANKS. 3. All, The Dallas Genealogical library has those little magnetic things on their reference books. The alarm goes off if someone walks out of the library with them. I don't think they come off very easily either. But, the loose files are different, they walk off all of the time. Even though the copy machines are right next to them. 1. Re: [MOLAWREN] Restaurants in Marionville Area
    2. Pat Miller
    3. Jane, We just got back from Lawrence County last night late. It rained, but cooperated enough that we got to put out flowers. The best restaurant in Marionville is Alice Irene's and was called Grants at the crossroad of Hwy 60 and 265. Plenty of parking and they have a back room that would easily seat your group. Just call them an make arrangements. Phone number in the 2003 phone book is 417-258-2288. We didn't go by there this time, so you might want to double check on them. There are other restaurants, but not any that I know of that are big enough to handle a group. Pat Miller James Koons wrote: > Need your help. 3. I took a photo for you of the building I believe you are talking about. It just has the Morris and Leiman name on it. But we ask around to many old timers and they knew of the Neece's and did not know if they had a place in there building caskets. My mom remembers a man working out of the back of that building building caskets. But she can not remember the name. We also ran up to the Miller Memorial cem. where a lot of Neece's are buried. Did not appear any of the grave had been decorated as of Sunday afternoon. But the Lion's club is in that old building. Maybe they could give you some history on it. I will directly email the photo I took to you. Good Luck.
