    3. Thank you for replying to me. I am just getting started on this part of the family and I don't know if Margaret Eaton had any siblings or not. I am trying to get in touch with a cousin for more information but she is doing her snowbird thing in Arizona now. Sound like your ggrandfather was a very determined man when he made his mind up. Did he and Mollie have any children? 1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] Lafayette and Mary Jane (Moore) Mayberry
    2. Ross Cameron
    3. Nancy, First, let me comment about the name "General Lafayette Maberry". General is actually his first name and Lafayette his middle name. It seems unusual to us today, but I have seen several instances where military titles have been given as first names. Just a few examples. My great, great, great Uncle Hardin Cameron's second wife, Anna L. McCoy, had a younger brother named General Jackson McCoy, born in 1846 in Tennessee. Although he usually went by Jack he appears in the 1870 census as General J. McCoy. And my grandmother Cameron had a first cousin, Major M. [probably Moore, after another relative of mine who was a Union Major, James Marion Moore] Redfearn, born in 1881 in Greene Co., Mo. He died in 1978. Although I did not know him, all the records I have found on him give his name as Major Redfearn -- census, marriage, obituary. And there is a prominent Lea family in East Tennessee, at least one of whom was named Major and I think there were two or three. I have seen the first name of Admiral, too. And even today, I know a young boy under ten whose first name is Major. Others probably have lists of such names, too. These are only a few of those I have run across. When you see the "title" name being used for a child it is surely his name and also in the case of the very young General Lafayette Maberry. And briefly, as you may have noticed above, although the surname is spelled Mayberry in the marriage record and in some other records [even Mabry in 1860 census], Lafayette's tombstone and his descendants whom I have identified so far spell it Maberry. Now to the Moore family. I have indicated many times that I am descended from two Moore families and collaterally related to three others in Lawrence County. And I have been trying to identify all the Moores that show up in records in Lawrence County. I have recently learned that one line which I had previously thought was only collateral is another branch of one of my ancestral Moore families. It appears from the evidence so far that William Henry Moore's father was Samuel Moore whom it appears was another brother of my g-g-grandfather Willliam "Billy" Moore and his older brother Andrew Moore, Sr. Your Moore family is not one of mine (so far), but I have put some of that Moore family together, too, in my Lawrence County Moore research. Here is a little information on the early generations. Moore, John [b. c. 1789-90, Ireland] and Catherine Jane (?) [b. c. 1797-98, Tennessee] Family John Moore born ca. 1789-1790, Ire. died, ca. 1850-1860, Lawrence Co., Mo. - ? bur. ? mar. ca. 1811-12, Tn. - ? Catherine Jane "Cary Jane" (?) born ca. 1797-98, Tn. Mary Jane Moore born 2 Apr 1833, Tn. married, 1st, 13 Nov 1851, Lawrence Co., Mo. General Lafayette Maberry born 13 May 1830, Tn. died 2 Nov 1860, Lawrence Co., Mo.-? buried, Chesapeake Camp Ground Cemetery, Lawrence Co., Mo. married, 2nd, 5 Jan 1864, Lawrence Co., Mo. William M. Watterson born 24 Aug 1824, SC died 23 Oct 1911, Lawrence Co., Mo.-? buried, Chesapeake Camp Ground Cemetery, Lawrence Co., Mo. died Feb 1920 [or 1921], Lawrence Co., Mo.-? buried, Chesapeake Camp Ground Cemetery, Lawrence Co., Mo. In the list above, the question mark after Lawrence Co., Mo.-? indicates that I think that the person was a resident of Lawrence County at the time of death, but I have not researched records which state that the person actually died in the county rather than somewhere else, like a death certificate or funeral home record or obituary. I don't have the later descendants entered yet. And I have not listed here the various sources from which I have pulled this information together which includes probate, census, marriage, tombstone, newspaper, county histories, etc. You already have the information on the Frederick Williams family who is connected by the marriages above to the Moore family and also to the Maberry family. General Lafayette Maberry and Mary Jane Moore had only one child, a son whose name was Thomas Henderson Maberry. He served as Lawrence County Collector from 1904-1910. There is a brief sketch and photo of him in the 1974 Lawrence County History, p. 45. The son's name is given as George Henderson in the list of heirs by the Administrator in both of Lafayette's probate files but as Thomas in the censuses [including 1860 before his father's death] and other records. This is one instance where the census records are right and the list of heirs in the probate record is apparently wrong. Although I only have published abstracts of the probate record. Later papers including final settlement might give the correct name of Thomas Henderson. There is also a brief sketch and photo of William M. Watterson, who was Eastern District Judge on the County Court, 1878-1882, on p. 59 of the 1974 History. Ross Cameron >>> <APUND@aol.com> 03/31 7:07 PM >>> Well, since business here is slowing down, I'll send a query. I have a marriage between Gen. L. Mayberry and Mary Jane Moore, Nov. 13, 1851, in Lawrence Co. I feel pretty sure the Mayberry is Lafayette Mayberry, of the Chesapeake area probably. But I would like to know which Moore family Mary Jane is from. She married a second time to Wm. M. Watterson, 5 Jan 1864, if my sources are correct. There is at least, on the marriage list, a marriage that fits. I also am puzzled about the Gen. in Mayberry's name on the marriage list. He was rather young to be a general I should think, since he was born in 1832. If anyone has any clues, please send them. Thanks. Nancy Pundsack

    2. PJ, on 4/2/00 you wrote: "Regarding your Mayberrys, do you know if this family is connected to the Maberrys (their spelling) of the Greenfield area? My aunt's family (Betty Jo Maberry Jackson) were of this tribe. Her father was Ralph Elton Maberry; he owned a service station in Stotts City for many years until the late '60s; he died sometime in the mid 1970s (I think)." PJ, I don’t know any of the recent descendants of any of the Mayberrys or Maberrys or Mabrys. I would like to find some of them. There was another family of Mayberrys in Ray and Livingstone Counties and it’s possible that their descendants moved into Lawrence Co. Otherwise, the only family I know of in Lawrence Co. is the family of Lafayette Mayberry. There was a T. H. Maberry who was county collector in 1908, but I don’t know what family he belonged to. Do you know the name of your aunt’s grandfather, the father of Ralph Elton Maberry? Perhaps that would be far enough back to make a connection. Nancy Pundsack

    3. Dear Pat, I am not familiar with Smith County records, but the Smith County Web Page bibliography indicates marriage records for 1838 and 1845-later and a few other sources which you might check. I did not "look around" for an explanation but I presume Lynda's source is probably good. However, you can always keep looking for other sources. For example, my Pattons came from Bedford County, Tenn., which also lost many pre-Civil War records. However, a marriage record for James Marion Moore and Rachel W. Patton was found in the minutes of New Providence Church there. Also, while researching my wife's family in a county with a courthouse which burned in the late 1800s and lost many records, I found a certified copy of a marriage record from the County Clerk in the ancestor's pension file. This copy was submitted for his pension before the courthouse fire. It appears you have found the marriage date somewhere and that may be the only record you find. If they were married in Smith County, you may never find the official courthouse marriage record. However, a record of the marriage may show up in a will or probate record, a deed, a court record, a pension record, a church record, a minister's records, a newspaper, a Bible record, or somewhere else. I found an obituary for my g-g-g-grandfather Cameron who died in 1856 in Grainger County, Tenn., a Baptist, published in the Disciples of Christ newspaper in Indiana of which his nephew was the editor. I didn't even know any names of brothers, sisters, nephews, etc., until I found the obituary through a Web query posting made by a relative. Ross >>> <Roulx@aol.com> 03/31 6:05 PM >>> Dear Ross, Thanks for your answer. I was beginning to feel left out! That's it....taxes, I guess, the time when the world stands still, while everyone tries to avoid as much as possible. got ours in early, so I'm restless and ready to go again. Since you are here, I'll ask you a question. Do you know if part of Smith County TN records were destroyed? I have been searching for the marriage record for my g-g-grandparents, Lewis W. Hunt and Eveline Allen, and had always believed they were married May 22, 1841, in Smith Co. When I sent for the record, at the TN state library archives, got a "wasn't found" answer, along with pages copied from Sistler, where they should have been listed, but were not. I am not sure what year Lewis arrived in Missouri, but now wondering if he and Eveline were married there. Anyway, the question was, do you know if some Smith Co. records were destroyed by fire? Pat

    1. [MOLAWREN-L] Shiloh Cemetery Lookup Offer
    2. Hello Everyone, I finally can offer some lookups. I have obtained my first, personally owned actual booklet that could be considered a primary source (in my opinion anyway) of Dade Co Genealogy. It is the Cemetery Book for Shiloh Cemetery, connected with the Shiloh Methodist Church, located right on the Dade/Lawrence Co line, with many Lawrence Co folks buried there (including LOTS of my own and collateral lines). It is on county road WW, and I am assuming pretty close to So Greenfield. I would be happy to do lookups toward the end of the weekend, but be forwarned the folks actually buried there are in the index, but there are many notations as to son of x, daughter of x, etc. so it may take me a while to go through it. And if you an IRBY, FORTNER, FRIAR, HOLMAN, COPELAND, MARSH or any one of the others with LOTS of folks, I will mail the pages to you. Sorry for the archives, but I don't have time to type them up, plus with some of the more prolific of them we are bordering on copyright violations probably. Have a Good Weekend, Janet

    1. [MOLAWREN-L] Lafayette and Mary Jane (Moore) Mayberry
    2. Well, since business here is slowing down, I'll send a query.

    1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] messages?
    2. Dear Ross, Thanks for your answer. Pat
