    1. [MOLAWREN-L] Early Settlers
    2. This is an attempt to identify early settlers of Barry and the sourthern section of Lawrence Counties based on the 1833 Greene Co. tax list which can be viewed: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ozarksgs/1833tax.htm Like names, from the 1840 Barry Co. census, have been matched to the 1833 tax list, the first year that SW Missouri citizens were taxed under Greene County. 1833 Green Co. 1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] Early Law.Co. burials
    2. Ross Cameron
    3. Georgia, If you have not found a tombstone inscription for him in the published Lawrence County Tombstone Inscription volumes, then I doubt that there is a stone still remaining. The volumes are not perfect, but they are very good. At that early date I believe that all of the burials would have been on family property. I don't know of any "established" cemeteries that early. Some of those "family burial grounds" eventually became cemeteries. But most burial sites that early are probably "lost." Burials did not have to be recorded anywhere, etc., and this area wast pretty sparsely settled frontier at that time. And many stones for deaths this early were erected many years later, long after the burial. The earliest burial I know of off the top of my head is Abigail (Smith) Williams, wife of Judge John Williams who died 8 Aug. 1833. She was buried on (or near) the family farm at the time (It was part of Greene Co., then). This became Roberts Cemetery. My g-g-g-grandparents Baugh were buried on the Baugh farm which is still owned by the Baugh family and has never been out of the family, but no one today knows where the stones are. In fact family have been looking for their stones for probably 50 years or more, but nobody alive even then knew the burial places. The only likely record for burials that early would be the tombstones themselves if they have survived. Unless, of course, the family kept some record. Unfortunately there are many graves from even the later 1800s that no one can find today. Either no engraved tombstone was erected or it is lost. Often times, a large fieldstone, tree, or other physical marker was used, but if the information did not get passed down through the family, then it is lost. There are many instances of newspaper obituaries, etc., which state that a person was buried in a specific cemetery but there is no extant tombstone. Just last week I found a reference to someone who died in 1891 and was buried beside her parents at the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery. However, there are apparently no stones for either her or her parents. Her father was a former postmaster of Mt. Vernon and her husband was the editor of the Aurora Gazette when she died. Surely, this family would have had stones, but they do not exist now. Ross Cameron >>> "James Reese" <reesr@ix.netcom.com> 04/21 10:56 AM >>> Ross, Where were early Mt.Vernon burials located? I am trying to locate a child William E. Whaley, d Sept 5, 1844. The family lived in Mt. Vernon as early as 1842. Mt. Vernon did not become the county seat until 1845. Are there any records covering that period. Would the answer be Barry county? If so, where? Thanks, Georgia

    2. Ross Cameron
    3. Vicki, Three quick suggestions which you may have already checked, but just in case, you haven't. First. there should be guardianship papers in the records of the Lawrence County Probate Court for minors who were orphaned in Lawrence County. I did not find a Probate file for Simeon Jones in the index, but there is one for a Susan A. Jones in Box 28 [no file no. given], which is probably late 1870s. Since Susan died in 1871 according to tombstone transcription, I don't know if this is her or another. As you know there were many Jones. Second, check for an obituary for Mary Jones Hughes in the 1949 Lawrence and Dade County newspapers. It might name parents, siblings, etc. It may be in the obituary card file at the McCanse Library, but that file is not complete so be sure you have someone actually check the newspaper microfilm if there is not one in the card file. You can borrow the film from the State Historical Society of Missouri in Columbia on interlibrary loan. If Sinking Creek is still an active cemetery, the Cemetery Association secretary or another officer may have the record books which give dates of death and burial if the tombstone only says 1949 as you indicate. Thirdly, order a copy of Mary Jones Hughes's death certificate from Jeff City. Ross >>> "Ronald Peterson" <repp5@concentric.net> 04/20 10:51 PM >>> Dear Group, Might I ask your indulgence in what may be a long-sought answer to what happened to my Grt Grandfather's sister, Mary JONES. (not Lawrence, maybe Dade) William Taylor HUGHES 1869-1944 Buried Sinking Creek Cem. s/o Wm R. & Sarah Elizabeth (Unknown) HUGHES of 1880 Lincoln Twp., Lawrence Co. Both bur. Sinking Creek Cem. 3. Jean, The "newsletter" referred to is the Lawrence County Historical Society Bulletin which is published quarterly by the Society. Membership in the Society is $7.00 a year and includes a subscription to the Bulletin. The Bulletin has been published since May 1961 and the current issue is number 153. Some of this information is available on the Lawrence County Missouri Gen Web page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/index.htm which has a link to an unofficial Lawrence County Historical Society web page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~molawre2/society.htm The LCHS web page says: ******** Lawrence County Historical Society P.O. Box 406 Mt. Vernon, MO. 65712 Membership in the society is $7.00 per year which includes a bulletin that is published quarterly. ******** followed by a list of publications available from the Society which needs updating. The Lawrence County Gen Web Page has several links. Here is the home page text which needs some corrections: ******** Lawrence County Missouri Lawrence County was officially formed in 1845. It was first a part of Greene County, and later a part of Barry County. The settlement of the Lawrence County area was started in the early 1830's. It began with the immigration of colonizers from Virginia, Kentucky, the Carolinas and Tennessee. The Kentucky pioneers were know for their hunting abilities, while the Tennessee families were for the most part immigrating there for farming of the land. Today the county is comprised of 14 townships with Mt. Vernon being the County Seat. Lawrence County is made of the following towns, villages and hamlets: Albatross, Aurora, Bowers Mill, Chesapeake, Elliott, Forest Home, Forest Park, Freistatt, Gray's Point, Halltown, Heatonville, Hoberg, Kendallville, Lawrenceburg, Lockhart, Logan, Lyons, Marionville, McKinley, Miller, Mount Pleasant, Mt. Vernon, Olinger, Orange, Paris Springs, Pierce City, Phelps, Plew, Red Hot, Red Oak, Rescue, Round Grove, Saint Martha, Spencer, Star, Stinosn, Stotts City and Verona. 1. [MOLAWREN-L] Helene D. Kuehne, b. Marionville, 1890
    2. Dear List, According to her mini-biography in "Who's Who in Los Angeles County", 1928/29, Helene Doris Kuehne was born in Marionville, MO on 29 Dec 1890. Her parents were H.F.W. Kuehne and Amelia (Lillemann) Kuehne, who were married the previous April in St. Louis. This family must have live in Marionville for only a year or so, before moving on to Winfield, KS. What I wonder is whether Lawrence County has any birth records that old, or whether Marionville had a town directory which might confirm that the family had been there. Dr. Kuehne had been a pastor of the 5th Christian Church in St. Louis, and ran a business and academic college in Winfield. Helene grew up to be a well known (and quite glamorous) aviation pioneer and business woman in Los Angeles, and Marionville could well be proud to claim her. Any help with this will be gratefully appreciated. Rick Sherman, Kensington, CA

    1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] [MOLAWREN] William Gross
    2. Ross Cameron
    3. Sam, Since you didn't say where you got the information that there was a William Gross in Lawrence County, I was guessing that the date and place of birth for William Gross which you cited is from his Social Security Record or the Social Security Death Index. With his date and place of birth, I was suggesting that you order a copy of William Gross's birth certificate for 1916 from Jefferson City, then you would get his parent's names. This might help you find him in the 1920 census record or in other records. Of course, his parents might have moved out of Missouri before 1920. Then with that you may be able to find him. Also, you could write to the Recorder's Office in Mt. Vernon to see if there is a marriage of a Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Gross in Lawrence County during 1930-44. I do not live in Missouri and am only using Lawrence County Records which have been published which I have purchased which are in my personal library. If you think any of my suggestions would be helpful in your search, you may pursue them. I do not have any of these records in my library. You would have to order birth certificates, marriage records, or newspapers to research as I have suggested. The Signature for Willaim Gross on my mother's birthcertificate is Mrs. O.W. Gross which is not listed anywhere and the only Gross I could find for Lawrence Missouri is William Gross.. I have sent away for my mothers origian social security application form... so that should give me the right answers when it comes in.. I wan informed tho that since my mother's birth mother Ms Clauida Aldine Mills born 1914 is Mrs. O.W. Gross..sometime between 1930 and 1944 she married a Mr. O.W. Gross and the advidavit was signed in Lawrence Misouri so that is where I have started my search...on August 3rd, 1944 when the Advidavit was signed by Mrs. O.W. Gross was 30 years of age and she stated she was my mother's mother.. the original delayed birth certificate was signed by a James G Hoover who at the time was the (Notary Public or Other Official Empowered to execute Oath) so this is the information I have hope this helps you..
