    1. [MOLAWREN-L] Gay family
    2. Brenda Baughman
    3. My g-g-g grandmother was Louisa Gay Purdy who was born in KY. She died in Jasper Co and the Purdys settled in Dade Co. Could she be part of the bunch? Haven't seen that much about KY Gay family. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com/

    1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] William Washington Gay
    2. Janet, Our GAYs could tie somehow way back in VA. Below is just about all I know about Rhoda Gay Spivey. There was a Milly Gay who m. Benj. Spivey's brother Brittain Spivey; they were not sisters, but I haven't established a relationship yet. There was a William Gay who appears in Southampton Co. VA land records beg. abt. 1800. He gave land to Jeremiah and James Gay. I have Southampton Co. marriage records for Gay grooms, but don't see any of the names you mention. The Gay family you have in Dade Co. in 1850 could be related. That is about the time that Rhoda and Benjamin arrived. There had to be some reason for them coming to MO. I have not found them in any 1850 census, and Benj. must have died before the 1860 census. Their (presumed) son Brittain had land (1859) in Polk Co. in the far southwestern corner with one farm between him and Dade Co. Brittain was in 6th Cav. Vols. and discharged for disability. Dade Co. abstracts note that he died intestate in 1866 (I have not seen the full record A272-273). --Barbara Berry Meger Descendants of James Gay 1 James Gay .. + Patience Draper m: May 21, 1804 in Southampton Co., VA .........2 Rhoda Gay b: Abt. 1805 in Southampton Co., VA d: Aft. 1860 in MO .............+ Benjamin Spivey b: Bet. 1780 - 1790 in Southampton Co., VA d: Bef. 1860 in MO m: August 04, 1824 in Southampton Co., VA ....................3 Brittain Spivey d: April 16, 1866 in Dade Co., MO ....................3 Sarah Spivey b: Abt. 1842 in North Carolina ........................+ H. 1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] William Washington Gay
    2. Barbara, William Washington Gay's father was Zorababel Gay. He was born in the 1750s and married (2) my ggg grandmother Selah Corbitt, b. 1777 (romantic story there). In his pension papers he (Zorababel) states his father was Kinchen Gay (a popular Gay first name), who was also in Edgecombe (later probably Nash) Co NC. I have seen connections between the Edgecombe and Northampton NC (Northampton of course being just south of Southampton VA) Gays. William Washington Gay was the only of six "boys", as his daughter "Tennie" Gay Hill referred to them in correspondence, to move from Tennesse to Missouri, which he did with my Whaleys in the early 1850s Because Zorabable had children named Dempsey and Henry, which are longstanding Isle of Wight VA Gay names, and he lived in Edgecombe Co NC, amongst a whole gang of Gays, he is undoubtedly from the original Henry Gay. I haven't done ANY research into the NC or VA records on a Kinchen Gay that early. Can you tell me anything about your Rhoda Gay's Gay family? Is she related to the Gay's in the 1850 Dade Co census that I have been trying to figure out for a while? Page 269R, Gay, Green, 45, b. KY, wife Elizabeth 31, b. TN, children all b. (I left in the bad spelling and lack of punctuation) Lewisville Forsythe Co., NC Jan 14th, 1890 Dear Aunt. It is again I attempt to answer your kind & welcome letter that came to hand a few days ago. Was very sorry to hear of your afflictions. Wish I could aid you in some way or other. Hope you are all better in this time. I have been very poorly for over two month. not able to do my housework and have to keep a girl hired. I am sometimes up & sometimes down. At time I feel that I'll not live long, but yet I do not. --- I will be --- I have such awful pains in my back & side & on my heart at times I can't lay on either side. I just have to lay flat on my back & propped up part of the time but I will take it for my share we have crosses & trials & afflections in this world for this is a world of trouble any way and if it wasn't for the blessed hope of a better one I would at times give up in dispair. but just think of Jesus how he was tempted in the wilderness & we can suffer a little & he has said I will never leave thee nor forsake thee and he also says he will not put more on us than we can bear. and thoug we think it hard but it is all for our good, perhaps. Mrs. Warner, (nighbor of mine) says she has heard a sure cure for bronititis. Take rock candy & put it in rye whiskey & drink it. & smoke life everlasting. Aunt Jane I recon you know what that is. it is a weed that grows in old fields. Don't know if grows there or not. There is plenty of it here. Kind a new discovery for is said to be a safe & sure remedy for bronchitis. I sent Pa your letter & part of your hair so he could read it. I haven't seen him since 2 weeks before Christmas. He lives in Salem now. Walter was down at Christmas. He is on the Dobson Circuit - Surry Co. He will move to Dobson in a few weeks to the Parsonage. He has 13 places to preach at. John was down nearly 2 weeks ago. They live in Stokes, 10 miles this side of Walter. Demarices has a baby girl over 2 weeks old. I haven't been able to go to see her. & she lives some 4 or 5 mile from hear. I havent heard anything from Harmona or Bowdens since I wrote before. And as to the reason for Pas not writing I could tell you for I have heard him say. but then it isn't any of my business & I don't like to mettel. I think if you will send him a receipt for the last money he sent you or a clear receipt. he will then write & be like always. but he says he has been a brother to you & has a receipt for every dollar or cent that he has paid out. debts that come p & he had to pay. Others come up that he fought against 1 - or one that I know of if he hadn't you would have lost that much out of your estate. I talked to him about it several times. and you know how he is as good as I do. don't think hard of me now for telling you I thought I'd give you a little satisfaction about it for I have tried hard to get him to write & he wont. I want you to answer soon. Give my love to all your children & tell them to write & send me theirs when you send yours soon Your ever loving nice S. J. Holder ps what was it you said you'd send me if you had any. I could not make it out. Tell it again. I will send you some of mine & Birtha's hair. Would send some of the boys but it is too short. They are going to school now. The darkest hair mine. MO never married Editor's note: I think the letter found inside the Harmon Bible gives us a very typical example of family letters, as it touches on so many of life's problems and situations. The very common reference to ill health begins the letter --- the pains and illnesses tat were suffered stoically before the use of the modern medical treatments we take for granted. So many letters carry the same religious references to bearing physical ills as Jesus bore his suffering. But immediately the letter becomes more practical, with advice about the latest remedy for bronchitis. Don't you want to try it? -- take rock candy & put it in rye whiskey & drink it. & smoke life everlasting". The letter writer describes life everlasting as a "weed that grows in old fields" and with Martha Meyers' help, I can tell you what it is. Joseph E. Meyer's book, "The Herbalist" describes it as being in the aster family and known also as Old Field Balsam, Indian Posy, Sweet scented Life Everlasting, White Balsam. Meyer says it is an astringent that relieves irritations of the mouth and throat if the leaves and blossoms are chewed. Bruises and local irritations are also relieved by placing the leaves on the areas. It grows 1-2' high. l If home remedies like life everlasting interest you, you'd enjoy Mr. Meyer's book. Its complete title is, "The Herbalist: Medicinal Plants, Plant Vitamins and Minerals, Beverage Teas, Spices and flavoring Herbs, Plant colors for food and cosmetics, plant dyes for fabrics, Botanicals for Potpourri and Sachets, Dentifrices, gargles, cosmetics, botanical curios, smoke flavoring Botanicals, assorted other information". The book was first published in 1918, the Revised and enlarged edition was published in 1960 by Rand McNally and Company., Conkey Divison. Our letter writer goes on to family news, including the birth of a baby. Then we get a glimpse of a family estrangement over money, apparently -- again, a fairly common occurrence. One can picture the unhappiness on both sides as family members in North Carolina and in Missouri tried to bridge the gap of distance and misunderstanding. I love the postscript of the letter: "What was it you said you'd send me if you had any. I could not make it out. Tell it again." Then the bits of hair were included in the letter -- how typical that was, too, and the necessary explanation that the darkest hair belonged to the writer. And we have the comment that the boys' hair is too short to sample! Exchanging bits of hair was a way, short of sending a photo, that told the receiver what the person looked like, and was a way of haring oneself in affection. It was another typical touch to this letter in the Harmon Bible.

    3. Hi, Herbert Lee Jones, is my grandfather, his parents are both from Mt. Vernon, MO, Robert Lee Jones (b. 1863) and Sarah Francis "Fannie" Anderson (b. 1863). I think that in the 1880's they left with the Andersons and looked for land in OK (Just a guess) because Herbert was born in Purcell, OK in 1891, Robert died in 1890. At some point some of the Andersons moved up to WA state and I believe that is where Herbert met and married Lucy Michel (b. 1900). On my father's birth certificate she lists her birth state as Montana. I have had a hard time tracking her so far, in fact an impossible time. I don't know anything of her ancestors so I suppose they could be from anywhere. If you've heard of a Lucy Michel I'd appreciate your contacting me, please, or if you have any ideas as to where I could look, Thanks, Diane P.S. 3. Haven't seen much activity on this list in a while, thought I'd send this one: In my search of the family tree, it was pretty exciting to learn my great-grandparents in the Appalachian Mountains were pioneers in iron and steel. I could hardly stand the excitement until I learned the truth that Great-Grandma stayed home and ironed while Great-Grandpa went off to steal. It's probably an old joke but I thought it was pretty good, Diane Genealogically examining the ANDERSONS, BECKS, COLLEYS, MICHELS and JONESES of Missouri, Oklahoma and Washington State

    3. Here's a suggestion. Match the 1850 census too. My ggg grandfather is on that 1833 Greene County tax list. In 1840, he was in Washington County, AR. But in 1850, he was in the Dade County, MO, census. (Dade was also part of Greene, I think, in 1833.) Some of those pioneers moved around quite a bit. Linda
