Hello Everyone, On the McDonald Co MO list, Patricia Scott has been posting her transcription of McDonald Co marriage records. She has given me permission to send them to the lists as long as I keep her copyright notice at the beginning. There are three separate marriage books, beginning in 1866 and ending in 1888. There will be approximately 20 posts. You will ALL find familiar names here..your Wolfenbargers, Smoots, Eppersons, etc., etc. I hope that this will help you all. Regarding why Eric Bradley Reustle cannot be found on the 2000 census: He picked up a census form at the college office and when he got home discovered it was in Cantonese. Went back for another and after flipping through the Japanese, Russian etc. found one that had familiar script. Got home and discovered it was in Spanish. Gave up. Love, Eric's mom

Dale, Jean, Paul and other contributors, Thank you all for "taking me back home" for a few moments. Wonderful stories, and history of real life in Lawrence County. I can almost imagine how good the Carnation "soda pop" flavors were. My kids and grandkids are amused when I use the term, seems everyone uses "soft drink" or a brand name now. My parents (Paul and Evelyn HOOK DEPRESTE) moved away when I was just a little girl, in 1955 I think it was. First to the Texas panhandle, then on to California. Good to see some descendants names from early settlers, too, and know that some of those family lines are still in the area. Vicki Peterson

I think that a good number of folks in middle Lawrence made their living, one way or another, from the Carnation plant. One of my uncles, Will Jackson, and a great-uncle, Emery Stearns, drove milk pickup routes. Emery was honored at retirement for being the longest tenured employee of Carnation in the U.S. -- 45 years. He went to work there, along with his father, Loren, and brothers, Bill and Albert, in 1924. I'm told that this is the year it opened. Emery and his brothers also had dairy cattle and sold their milk to Carnation. My fondest recollection of Carnation is not the dairy, but the soda pop bottling plant. Carnation developed their own flavors, mixed, bottled and distributed regionally under the Carnation brand. My great-aunt, Katherine Orr Jackson, remembers her uncle, Henry Orr, developing new flavors and "trying them out" with her. They bottled every flavor you can imagine, including an incredible Bitter Lemon, a dark Cream with a heavenly flavor, fruit and berry flavors and root beer. These came in small (10 oz., perhaps?) bottles. The bottles were all the same; embossed with the Carnation logo and type. You had to look at the bottlecap to identify the flavor. They also franchised a lemon-lime brand, Ski, which came in its own bottle. I remember drinking Carnation in my Granddad Jackson's store in Stotts City as recently as the early 1970s. I don't know when they quit bottling; my Granddad retired in 1975 and that was the last I ever saw of Carnation Soda Pop. I'm not sure what caused the demise of the Carnation dairy plant, but I suppose that it was the eventual dissolution of the dairy farm industry. For years, the dairy production of southwest Missouri burgeoned until it rivaled Wisconsin. Dear Paul and other Carnation folks, Those flavors sure sound good! That Dark Cream and Bitter Lemon ring a bell...maybe during roadtrips from Indiana to Oklahoma during the 50s....whilst stopping at Onondaga Cave! Although I grew up in Southern Indiana. I do remember Ski very well....but most important, thanks for the earlier memory of little glass soda pop bottles (always with a sandblasted texture!), the telltale bottle caps, and naturally, the wondrous red soda bottle chest on a rural grocery store's front porch. The hope of a child that when you dropped your nickels in, you could sliiiiide that bottle along its slot and pluck it out. Last night I received a message that claimed to be from AOL billing department. It starts out: "We are sorry to inform you that your account has had a number of billing flaws", and goes on later to ask you to confirm your account # and asks for my credit card #. Hi Monte, Do you have present day NICHOLS in Mt. Vernon? When I was a little girl, I had a close friend named Elsie NICHOLS who lived there. Don't remember anything about her family, other than her mother was what I would call a really ideal homemaker. I have put more energy and time into finding things concerning my surname of SHIPMAN. However, I am now ready to settle down and try to dig more into this mystery of the family of my maternal grandparents. OTIS BENJAMIN HOWARD, was born in Wheaton, MO on March 26, 1879; died Feb. 7, 1950. He used to write poetry and articles for a newspaper in Granby, MO/Newton County. He met and married my grandmother CORILLIA ANN ROSS HOWARD, who was born April 23, 1889 and died Feb 1, 1970 in LAWRENCE COUNTY. They lived in such places as Cassville and Exeter also. Corillia's mother was SUSAN AUSIDINE SHEWMAKE and her father was JERRY LEWIS ROSS. Any connections to any of these people will be greatly appreciated and shared!
