Additionally there is a W.W.I mailing group if you are looking for other kinds of information. Just send the command "subscribe" to GREATWAR-L-request@rootsweb.com. The group seems to be made up of mostly (65%? ... guessing) of British and Australians but there is a fair number of Americans and I've gotten some good information. No service records though. I pass along the following information for those of you who do not yet subscribe to ROOTSWEB REVIEW and MISSING LINKS and who might be looking for relatives born in California, 1905-1995, or died, 1940-1997. I also have added some of my own suggestions on searching. To subscribe for free send e-mail to: rootsweb-review-subscribe@rootsweb.com ******** Extract from RootsWeb Review, Vol. 3, No. 22 [yesterday] NEWS AND NOTES FROM ROOTSWEB NEW DATABASES AT ROOTSWEB. Four new free and fully searchable databases were added to RootsWeb in the past week. o CALIFORNIA BIRTH INDEX (1905-1995) has 24,596,236 public records with 984,961 surnames http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/birth/search.cgi o CALIFORNIA DEATH INDEX (1940-1995) contains 9,366,786 public records with 498,701 surnames http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi Ross's note: If you put in too much information you may not get a match because the death certificate may not have all the information you know, like mother's maiden name, etc. So you may have to leave some information blank in order to find the record. You may put both given names or one or none. If you give only one name it will give you the records where that name is a first name or a middle name, but watch out for nicknames. Suzie: My greatgrandfather was the son of Harden and Nancy Davis: Thomas Baldwin Davis born June 1, 1848 in Mt. Vernon and married Emily Jane Terrill b. Aug 21, 1850. So that makes Nancy Baldwin Davis's father and mother relatives of mine! I would appreciate more on that side of the family. Kay, Correction on Nancy Baldwin Davis' father--it was not Joshua Baldwin--he was one of her brothers. Her father was William Baldwin and mother was Catherine Berkheimer. The family migration was VA>WVA>OH>MO. If this is your line I have lots more. I'm not sure who James C. Baldwin is--probably a nephew of Nancy's. Kay, Thought I add some curiosities to the census information I sent in the other email. Nearest neighbors in 1850 were some Richardson families. James C. Baldwin and other, including a couple of Richardson men, were subpoenaed for the defense in State of Missouri vs Robert Murphy (perjury) [indictment filed Nov 1859; subpoena dated May 1860. Murphy had stated when sworn for jury duty in Taylor vs Nicholas that he had not previously formed or expressed an opinion as to how said issue [regarding a promissory note] should be determined. In 1860 the James C. Baldwin family are listed next door to Hardin Davis and family. Hardin's wife was Nancy Baldwin Davis according to the probate of Joshua Baldwin, her father. Census data for Joshua Baldwin families indicate a migration pattern of PA to KY and IL, then to Lawrence Co., Mo. If these Baldwin families connect, I suppose it would probably be in PA. I have three original photos (CDV albumen print format) of officers of the 1st Missouri (Bissell's) Engineers of the Civil War era. They are identified, but I do not know if they were from Company E as I have not researched their records. I can provide their names if you are interested. Either the Missouri State Archives (archref@mail.sos.state.mo.us) or the national archives has microfilm of the roster cards for this regiment. You might start with the Missouri Archives first as they respond quickly and are very customer friendly. The national archives is much slower to respond and is not as professional. Dale West

Hi Janet and All, You make a very good point regarding Lawrence County materials, and I don't know if there's an easy way to get people, who own these materials, involved to help others out, but I know that Edgar Byler III is doing an excellent job on the TNWayne-L mailing list in that respect. Unfortunately for most of us, we have some resources for some states and counties, but not for others. It's something which would be wonderful to see happen. Jean Cuevas PS. Do you know of on-line resources for Dade County marriages? Thanks! Good Morning Ross and Everyone. I imagine the postings are confusing because Patricia probably copied a formatted text (ie Word or WP document) to the email system. Neither your Group-Stupid nor my AOL handles these translations with any grace. I never actually opened the couple that came to my Microsoft Outlook account...and I am sure that there are bizarre boldings, capitalizations, font changes etc...Maybe even colors!! The version she sent IS grouped by Grooms. I am sure she has either an index or a separate bride text...I am not going to argue though..It is online...Lawrence Co's marriage for that period aren't. I don't know if I have ever seen a physical copy of the Lawrence Co Marriage book. I know the one's I have seen for Dade were clearly prepared before word processing. I confess to not having read any of the Marriage book except a brief run through of the first couple to realize they had lots of different counties. FYI, the search for the parents of John Baugh, d. 1761 Chesterfield Co, VA continues. My best, Janet
Hello Janet and Everyone, This was a little confusing when I first looked at it. It appears that the bride's name appears first even though it is sorted by groom's name. And the groom's surname and given names are separated by date of marriage. Since there are no "column" headings can you confirm my interpretation of the order of the data: "Bride's maiden name", then "Bride's given name", then "Groom's surname", then "Date of marriage" [or date marriage was recorded if date of marriage is not given and "date recorded" appears later in the entry], then "Groom's given name", and then "Name and title [minister, J. P., etc.] of person performing marriage" Thanks for sending this to the list!
