    1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] Where would the Franklin Land office be?
    2. Vickie, The 1825 land purchase was in Boone County. If you go back to the GLO and access Legal Description: Benjamin Chism and John Snell jointly purchased 80 acres in Section 25, Twp 49-N, Rng 12-W in Boone County. John Snell could be a clue, either the name means something and/or this may not be your Benjamin. In 1860, Barry County, flat Creek Twp is Jas. H. Chisem and family. No Snell. No other census record until 1880 when Charles S Chism 24 b. KY is listed as nephew to Elizabeth J Ray in Shoal Creek Twp. Best of luck with your search. bill

    3. Just for clarification; Bowers Mill and Stotts City were totally different towns about a half-dozen miles apart. I say "were"; Stotts City is still around and in fact experiencing a little revival -- the Stearnsy Bears are manufactured there and a lot of traffic through Stotts City has been generated by this industry. As I recall, Bowers Mill was an older town, west of Stotts City on the prairie. My dad recalls going there for "singing schools". Stotts City, where he grew up, is a few years over 100 years old. It was originally named Belle Plain; later called Pax; in 1898 (I think) it was renamed for its founder, Capt. Green C. Stotts. The old Stotts home is still standing. -----Original Message----- From: LndsayRose@aol.com <LndsayRose@aol.com> To: MOLAWREN-L@rootsweb.com <MOLAWREN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, June 11, 2000 4:41 PM Subject: Re: [MOLAWREN-L] LOST BOWERS MILL >I have heard of BOWERS MILL.. 2. Bowers Mill was at the very western border of the county. In fact, the west street was called ‘Jasper and Lawrence County Line’. “A Brief History of Lawrence Couty Missouri, 1845-1870” describes (in the first seven paragraphs) The village of Oregon or Lyons or Bowers Mill as a bustling community in the 1860’s to1880’s, naming churches, doctors, mills and tradesmen, all centered around Spring River. ‘The disappearance of Bowers Mill is due largly to a fire which destroyed a number of the priciple business houses and an overflow of Spring River which carried away what the fire did not destroy. The post office was moved and combined with LaRussell’s Post Office.” but the town had already been rebuilt once: “The village of Oregon or Bowers Mill in the year 1863 was sacked and burned by Col. Jo Shelby and was a most stiring event. The town rebuilt following the war and became an important trading point for many years.” At end of article is a picture of a brick building “Bowers Mill School- with addition 1963.” Just above the picture of the school: “The grave stone which marks the grave of G F Bowers may still be seen at the former site of Bowers Mill. Nothing exists now but three homes.” Bowers Mill is still shown on the Missouri General Highway map, near the Jasper County line, about 7-8 miles from Stotts City to the east. Goodspeed’s 1888 History Reprint states that Bower’s Mill was settled in the (18) 30’s by Uncle Billy Bowers and the mill was erected in 1838. bill

    1. Re: [MOLAWREN-L] LOST BOWERS MILL
    2. I have heard of BOWERS MILL.. My Grandfather was born there I think it was near to where Stott City is now. YOU MAY THANK JOHN WYLIE GILBERT b. MY GRANDFATHERS BROTHER born 1878 who so patiently explained the details of the family history to me. He listed HIS birth place as the future site of Stott City. He also told me Bowers Mill was No More. His father William Crawford Gilbert built an early version of the tract homes on the prarie out by Stott City. A series of little board homes, that sold well and made a great impression on the populace of the area, My grandfather was born April 20, 1869 Actually the Gilbert children born in Bowers Mill were born from 1867 to 1876. As I said, Uncle John listed his birth place a little differently so I take it might not the Bowers Mill location but my memory tells me that Stott City is a good place to look I would be quite interested in information you find on Bowers Mill. 2. Hi, Bob. Yes, I know a Cummingham. His name if Bruce. He is one of our best friends in California, where we live. He does a little genealogy now and then, but not seriously enough to find anyone. His father walked out of the house in the mid thirties, and no one ever heard from him again, so that is his big brick wall. I don't think he came from the south, though. Think it was through Philadelphia. I know this wasn't what you are asking, so no, I don't know any who are likely to be in your line. I am looking for Hunt, Moore, Edington, Morrow, and Harris. Pat

    1. [MOLAWREN-L] Newton County, Mo.
    2. Tartars
    3. Hi! An article in today's Neosho Daily News states that the county, in needing space, gave to the genealogical society at the library the marriage licenses of people married in Newton County, Mo--years . 1930-1986. These licenses were destined to go to the landfill. Now the genealogy dept. needs space, so, if you have a close relative who was married in Newton County during this period and want the marriage license, the society is willing to search their records and mail you the license if found. Many of these licenses were filled out when Camp Crowder was in full swing during the '40's when contingents of soldiers were stationed there. Searches may be requested in person or by mail. Mail request to Genealogical Friends of the Library at PO Box 314, Neosho, Missouri 64850. Include $1.50 which will cover the search and mailing per each license. Also include the following information: name of bride, name of groom, date of marriage, -----also name, address, telephone number and relationship of person requesting the search. If the search is unsuccessful, you will be notified but no refund on money. Good luck! Hope this helps someone. Ceil

    2. Paul E. "PJ" Jackson, Sr.
    3. Vickie -- Yes, Lawrence CO, AR Territory -- in its 1819 borders -- did include part of Barry CO, MO. This all changed in 1836, when, as a new state, AR's counties were first laid out and Lawrence CO, AR became dramatically smaller, bordering MO west of the bootheel. If your ancestors were in Lawrence CO, AR after 1836, then they must have travelled eastward. Just a guess, but it's not unlikely that your people DID move around (this was all frontier country, remember?), and those in Barry CO, MO could have ended up in Lawrence CO, MO without going very far -- just a very short way north. I'd suggest that if you have any evidence, at all, that they were in Lawrence CO, MO, that you continue to pursue them there. Somebody on the Stone County list is currently throwing a fit over similar surnames and given names; this item gives you reason to throw a fit over similar county names. At least we didn't name them all George. -----Original Message----- From: Vickie Lomon <lomon@junct.com> To: MOLAWREN-L@rootsweb.com <MOLAWREN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, June 10, 2000 11:53 PM Subject: Re: [MOLAWREN-L] Lawrence CO, AR >Thank you so much for your reply and help, and the earliest I find my Chisum >family in Lawrence county,Ark. is 1827, 1829 and 1834 up to 1850, >Are you saying in your first paragraph Lawrence county, Ark. in 1819 was a >small part of Barry county, MO. in 1827?
