My grandmother was Laura Ellen (STRINGER) SHIPMAN, b. Sept.1, 1884 in Pierce City, MO/Lawrence County. I am at a loss for a small piece of paper with a bit of info which I jotted down some time ago, but some of it I can recall anyway. (I promise to try to find it!) I know that her father was Siegel Stringer. Her mother died in childbirth a few years after Granny was born. At the moment, I can't recall her name. Siegel abandoned my grandmother at the age of 13 to raise her siblings. Family history says that he was traced, but no one ever found out what happened to him. He worked for the railroad (Santa Fe) at the time of his disappearance. Apparently Granny had a sister who married a man by the name of Tompkins in Lawrence or Newton County, MO. Eventually Laura Ellen STRINGER lived with her sister's family before marrying my grandfather John SHIPMAN. The sister's name was Frances STRINGER TOMPKINS. Their father Siegel STRINGER (of whom I have a photo), was presumed by some family members not to have disappeared at all, but some think he simply assumed a different name and lived in nearby Jasper County. Regardless, Granny used to tell stories about how as a child raising her siblings alone, she would often hear horses in the night and a "thud" against the door, only to discover a bag of money had been delivered to her. Family members again presumed this was money provided for her by her own father. I know her brothers were Roy, Leo and Noah STRINGER. There is also the Native American link through Granny as well. I have more on it. I have a number of photos (old tintype looking things) of the Stringer family, but unfortunately can't tell for sure who they might really be! Are there any threads in my tale here you might pull for a connection? By the way,one old photo of Siegel STRINGER has a man in it by the name of Boone SIMS. Please let me know if we can exchange info! Thanks for your time... Debra Shipman Rowe Vancouver

Bill, Thanks for that information. Barbara
Hi all, I was just reading my copy of the Lawrence County Record and noticed an ad for a 90 minute video on 100 years history of the Lawrence County Courthouse. The cost is 14.95 plus 4.00 s&h. They also have little ceramic lighted minatures of the courthouse. When I called to order my video I asked about the size of the courthouse minatures and she told me about 6" or 7" high. That is $47.50 but she didn't know the s&h charge. Since my grandfather Harry Whaley was at one time the county clerk and also the mayor of Mt Vernon I may also get the little building. This message is just to let everyone know just in case there is any interest. Cheers Barb in Pollock Pines, CA

Jack... I seem to recall that we have been in touch before. In any event, Leona was the sister of my great grandmother, Mary Jane. I am sending you all of the information I have on them. As to the pictures... I am not sure that I could identify them. But, Kay Griffin Snow -kgsno@primary.net - the owner of this Blackburn site -- is our common cousin who still lives in the area and is sure to be able to identify them if anyone can. Edgar Hunt - The Florida Keys Descendants of William S. Blackburn Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM S.1 BLACKBURN was born August 15, 1824 in TN., and died November 13, 1873 in Lawrence Co., MO. He married SABRA ANGELINE WATSON 1847 in White County, TN. She was born December 14, 1827 in Pittsylvania County, VA, and died October 03, 1914 in Round Grove, MO. Notes for WILLIAM S. BLACKBURN: 1. Married Sabra Abt. two weeks after they met. 2. Had a brother in Arkansas who was a freighter with several wagons. 3. During the Civil War, they lived in Confederate Territory, but did not espouse the Southern cause. The bushwhackers drove them to Missouri. 4. First went to Chillicothe Abt. 1848. In 1860 he was in Washington County, AR., where he had a "tanning yard." Then in 1869/70 he moved to homestead a prarie farm two mile from where the Hunt family lived in Lawrence County. MO. 5. William was killed soon after reaching S. MO. when a saw mill and the engine blower blew up. "One of the boy's named Gideon" was also killed. 6. Is interned next to his wife in Round Grove Cemetery. 7. Most of his children had moved to Colorado by 1895. 8. Traveled to Daviess County, Missouri during the Civil War. We know William S. Blackburn didn't want to serve in the Confederate Army from Arkansas, but why did he chose to travel to Daviess County, Missouri? It seems he chose to go there because that's where his sister Elizabeth lived, after she married Wright Taylor. That sounds logical -- go to where you have relatives. William S. and Sabra traveled to Daviess County prior to January 11, 1858, because that's where and when Daniel Monroe Blackburn was born. William S. and Sabra evidently returned to Arkansas after 1858, for the birth of Christopher Cortez Blackburn in 1859 and Alonzo Alvis Blackburn in 1863, but then were back in Daviess County, Missouri for the birth of Leona Louise Blackburn on November 03, 1865 in Jamesport, Daviess County, Missouri. They moved to Lawrence County, Missouri, it seems, for the birth of their last child, Valentine Volney (Vollie) Blackburn on February 14, 1869. Notes for SABRA ANGELINE WATSON: 1. Her mother was Dutch 2. Had 77 living descendents when she died - 8 children, 38 grandchildren and 1ggrandchild. 3. Her family was still living in Lawrence Co., Mo by 1870. Prior to this lived in NW? AR. More About WILLIAM BLACKBURN and SABRA WATSON: Marriage: 1847, White County, TN Children of WILLIAM BLACKBURN and SABRA WATSON are: i. NANCY ELIZABETH2 BLACKBURN, b. August 09, 1848; d. Have enjoyed reading the many great stories about the different families of Lawrence County. Have been waiting anxiously to see if there was ever mention made of the Jennings/Pettit families. I have a copy of a microfilm which states "...I, John "M" McCall, an acting Justice of the Peace in Turnback Township, in the county afore said do certify that I solemnized a marriage between Squire Jennings and Jane Emeline Petit in said county on the 4th day of April A.D. 1848. Given under my hand this 15th day of June 1848. Signed J. "M" McCall, JP, Recorded June 15th A.D., 1848 P.M. Wear, Clk." Have tried for a number of years to find Squire's parents but have not been successful. Am hopeful that somebody on this list may have information regarding this family that they would be willing to share. Twila

Ross- Thanks so much for your time and the information. You've done in two days what I've not be able to do in 5 years! The web site information will be a great help in filling in the rest of the family information. Thanks again! Seamans from whom he was divorced by the 1920 census. Usually the father's initials are listed before the mother's on such tombstone inscriptions, but the opposite appears to be the case this time. Perhaps Virginia is his second wife whom he married after 1920. Would anyone possibly have a probate record for Absolem Williams. b. VA. or the address of where I could write for one. Absolem probably was living with his son William Jefferson Williams in Lawrence Co. when he died sometime after 1870. Dottie
